CAP. VII.
1 The sones forsothe of Yrael han ouerpassid
the maundement, and han mystakun
of the curse; for Achor, the sone

of Charmy, sone of Zabdi, sone of Zare,
of the lynage of Juda, took sum what of
the curse; and wrooth is the Lord a&yogh;ens
the sones of Yrael.
2 And whanne Josue
wolde send fro Jericho men a&yogh;ens Hay,
that is biside Bethauen, at the eest coost
of the bur&yogh; town Bethel, he seide to hem,
Stieth vp, and aspye &yogh;e the loond. The
whiche fulfillynge the heestis, aspieden
Hay;
3 and turned a&yogh;en thei seiden to
hym, Stye not vp al the puple, but two
thowsandis or thre of men goon, and
doon a wey the cytee; whi al the puple
in veyn is traueyld a&yogh;ens moost fewe
enemyes?
4 Styeden thanne vp thre thowsand
of fi&yogh;tynge men, the whiche anoon
turnynge backis,
5 ben smyten of the men
of the cytee of Hay; and fellen down of
hem thretti and sixe men; and the aduersaryes
pursueden hem fro the &yogh;ate
vnto Sabarym; and thei fellen bi lowe
and short weyes fleynge. And the herte
of the puple myche dredde, and at the
lickenesse of water is molten.
6 Forsothe
Josue kitte his clothis, and redi felle doun
into the erthe before the arke of the Lord,
vnto euen, as wel he as alle the aldren of
Yrael; and thei putten powdre vpon her
heedes.
7 And Josue seide, Alas! alas!
Lord God, what woldist thow this puple
brynge ouer Jordan flood, for to taak vs
in the hoond of Amorrei, and for to leese?
Wolde God, as we bigunnen, we hadden
dwellid bi&yogh;onde Jordan.
8 My Lord God,
what shal Y seye, seynge Yrael to his
enemyes backis turnynge?
9 Chananees
shulen here, and alle the dwellers of the
loond and togidre gedryd thei shulen
enuyroun vs, and doon awey oure name
fro the loond; and what shal thou doo
to thi greet name?
10 And the Lord seide
to Josue, Ryse, whi lijst thow bowid in

the erthe?
11 Yrael hath synned, and hath
broken my couenaunt; and thei han taak
of the corse, and han stoln, and li&yogh;ed,
and han hidde among her vessels.
12 Ne
Yrael shal mowe stoond before her enemyes,
and hem he shal flee, for he is
polut with the curs; I shal not be more
with &yogh;ou, to the tyme that &yogh;e han alto
troden hym that is gilti of that hidows
trespas.
13 Ryse, halwe the puple, and sey
to hem, Be &yogh;e halwid a&yogh;en to morwe; forsothe
thes thingis seith the Lord God of
Yrael, Cursynge is in the mydil of thee,
Irael; thow shalt not mowe stoond before
thin enemyes, to the tyme that he
be doon awey fro thee, that is defoulid
with this hidows gilt.
14 And &yogh;e shulen
come eerly eche bi &yogh;oure lynagis; and
what euer lynage the lot fynde, he shal
come bi his kynredis, and kynrede bi
howsis, and hows bi men.
15 And so euer
he in that gilt were taak, he shal be brent
with fier with al his substaunce, for he
hath brokun the couenaunt of the Lord,
and hath do sacrilege in Yrael.
16 And
so Josue rysynge eerly, sette Irael bi her
lynagis; and it is founden the lynage of
Juda;
17 which, whanne after his meynees
was offred, it is founden the meynee of
Zare; forsothe thilk bi men offrynge he
foonde Zabdi;
18 whos hows in sondry
men dyuydyng, he foonde Achor, the sone
of Charmy, sone of Zabdi, sone of Zare,
of the lynage of Juda.
19 And he seide to
Achor, My sone, &yogh;if glorye to the Lord
God of Yrael, and knowlech, and shewe
to me, what thow hast doon; ne hyde
thou.
20 And Achor answerde to Josue,
and seide to hym, Trewly, Y haue synned
before the Lord God of Yrael, and thus
and thus Y haue do;
21 Y saw&yogh; forsothe
among the spuylis a ful good reed mantil,

and two hundreth siclis of siluer, and a
goldun rewle of fifti siclis; and coueytynge
took awey, and hidde in the erthe,
a&yogh;ens the myddil of my tabernacle; forsothe
the siluer Y couerde with the doluen
erthe.
22 Sente thanne Josue seruauntis,
the whiche rennynge to the tabernacle of
hym, thei founden alle thingis hid in the
same place,
23 and the siluer togidre; and
thei takynge awey fro the tent token
the thingis to Josue, and to alle the
sones of Yrael; and threwen forth before
the Lord.
24 And so Josue takynge Achor,
the sone of Zare, and the siluer, and the
mantil, and the golden rewle, and sones
and dou&yogh;tres of hym, oxen, and asses, and
sheep, and thilk tabernacle, and al the
purtenaunce, and al Yrael with hym, ladden
hem to the valey of Achor;
25 where
seide Josue, For thow hast disturblid vs,
out stourbe thee the Lord in this day.
And al Irael stonede hym; and alle
thingis, that his weren, ben wastid with
fier.
26 And thei gedreden vpon hym a
greet heep of stonus, the which abidith
stil vnto the day that is nowe. And the
wodenesse of the Lord is turned awey
fro hem; and the name of the place is
clepid unto this day the valey of Achor.
