CAP. IV.

1   The which ouergoon, the Lord seide to Josue, 2   Chees twelue men, eche bi eche lynagis, 3   and comaund to hem, that thei taken fro the mydil of Jordans trow&yogh;, where stoden the feet of the preestis, twelue hardest stonus; the whiche &yogh;e shulen set in the place of tentis, where &yogh;e this ny&yogh;t fitchen tentis. 4   And Josue clepide twelue men, whom he chees of the sones of Irael, 5   eche of eche lynagis; and seith to hem, Gooth bifore the arke of the Lord &yogh;oure God to the mydil of Jordan, and bere &yogh;e thens eche eche stonus

in &yogh;oure shuldres, after the noumbre of the sones of Irael, 6   that it be a tokne bitwixe &yogh;ow. And whanne the sones of Irael asken &yogh;ow to morwe, seiynge, What to hem wolen thes stonus? 7   &yogh;e shulen answere to hem, The watrys of Jordan han failid before the arke of the boond of pees of the Lord, whanne he passide it; therfor thes stonus ben set into the mynd of the sones of Yrael, vnto with outen ende. 8   Thanne the sones of Yrael diden as Josue comaundide to hem, berynge fro the mydil of Jordanus trow&yogh; twelue stonus, as to hym the Lord comaundide, after the noumbre of the sones of Yrael, vnto the place in the which thei setten tentis; and there thei puttiden hem. 9   Forsothe other twelue stonus putte Josue in the mydil of Jordans trow&yogh;, where stoden preestis, that beren the ark of the boond of pees of the Lord; and ben there vnto the day that is nowe. 10   Forsothe the preestis, that beren the arke, stoden in the mydil of Jordan, to the tyme that alle thingis weren fulfillid, that the Lord comaundide to Josue, for he shulde speke to the puple, as Moises had seide to hym. And the puple hyede, and passide forth. 11   And whanne alle weren goon ouere, &yogh;ede ouere and the arke of the Lord, and the preestis wenten before the puple. 12   Forsothe the sones of Ruben, and Gad, and half the lynage of Manasse, aarmed wenten before the sones of Irael, as to hem comaundide Moyses. 13   And fourti thowsand of fi&yogh;tynge men bi companyes and oostis wenten vpon the pleyn and wijld feeldis of the cyte of Jericho. 14   In that day the Lord magnyfiede Josue before al Yrael, for thei shulden drede hym, as thei dredden Moyses, &yogh;it while he lyuede. 15   And he seide to hym, 16   Comaund to the preestis that beren the arke of the boond of pees, that thei styen vp fro Jordan. 17   The which comaundide

to hem, seynge, Stye vp fro Jordan. 18   And whanne thei weren goon vp, berynge the arke of the boond of pees of the Lord, and the drye erthe hadden bigunne to treed, the watris ben turned into his trow&yogh;, and floweden, as bifore thei weren woned. 19   Forsothe the puple fro Jordan stiede the tenthe day of the firste moneth, and settiden tentis in Galgalis, a&yogh;ens the este coost of the cyte of Jericho. 20   Forsothe the twelue stonus, `the whiche thei token fro Jordans trow&yogh;, Josue putte in Galgalis; 21   and seide to the sones of Irael, Whanne &yogh;oure sones asken to morwe her fadres, and seyn to hem, What to hem wolen thes stonus? 22   &yogh;e shulen teche hem, and seye, Bi the drye trow&yogh; we passiden this Jordan, 23   the Lord oure God driynge the watris of it in oure si&yogh;t, to the tyme that we weren ouerpassid, as he dide bifore in the Reed See, 24    `the which he dryede to the tyme that we weren ouerpassed, 25   that alle the puplis of loondis leeren the moost strong hoond of the Lord, and that &yogh;e dreden the Lord &yogh;oure God al tyme.
