30 Thanne these thingus rehersid, that of
king Artaxerse weren writen, Rathinus,
and Sabellius, scribe, and that with hem
weren ordeined, ioynende, hee&yogh;endeli
camen in to Jerusalem, with horse men,
and puple, and cumpanie;
31 and begunnen
to forfenden the bilders. And thei voideden
fro the bilding of the temple in Jerusalem,
vnto the secunde &yogh;er of the regne
of Darie, king of Persis.

and of Persis,

purper, and to gouernoures, and to counseileris,

Ynde vnto Ethiope, to an hundrid and

3 And whan
they hadden eten and drunken, and fulfild,
turneden a&yogh;een, thanne king Darie
ste&yogh;ede vp in his litil bed place, and sleep,
and is wakid.
4 Thanne thoo thre &yogh;unge
men, keperis of the body, that kepten the
bodi of the king, seiden the tothir to the
tother,
5 Seie wee eche of vs a woord, that
befor passe; and whos euere woord seme
wisere of the tother, king Darie shal
&yogh;iue to hym grete &yogh;iftus,
6 and to be couered
with purper, and to drinken in gold, and
vpon gold to slepen, and a goldene char,
with bridel, and a bys mytre, and a be&yogh;e
aboute the necke;
7 and in the secunde
place he shal sitte fro Darie, for his wisdam;
and the cosin of Darie he shal be
clepid.
8 Thanne eche writende his woord,
seleden, and putten vnder the pilwe
of king Darie;
9 and seiden, Whan the
king hadde rise, thei shul &yogh;iue to hym
ther thingus writen, and what euere
thing the king shal demen of thre, and
the maister iugis of Persis, for the woord
of hym is wisere, to hym shal be &yogh;iue the
victorie, as it is write.
10 Oon wrot, Strong
is win.
11 The tother wrot, Strengere is
the king.
12 The thridde wrot, Strengere
ben wymmen; ouer alle thingus forsothe
ouercometh treuthe.
13 And whan the king
hadde risen, thei token ther writen
thingis, and &yogh;euen to hym, and he radde.
14 And sendende he clepide alle the maister
iugis of Persis, and of Meedis, and the
clothed in purper, and the reuleris of
prouincis, and prefectis; and thei seten
in conseil, and ben rad write befor them.
16 And he seide, Clepeth the &yogh;unge men, and
thei shul shewe ther woordis. And thei
ben clepid, and camen in.
17 And he seide
to hem, Shewith to vs of these thingus that
ben writen. And the rathere, that hadde

seid of the strengthe of win,
18 began, and
seide, Men! hou miche win is passende
strong; to alle men that drinken it it
berth doun the mynde;
19 also of king and
of faderles child it maketh the minde
vein; also of seruaunt and of freman, of
pore and of riche;
20 and alle minde it
turneth in to sikyrnesse, and in to gladnesse;
and it remembreth not of any
sorewe and dette;
21 and alle the entrailis
it makith onest; and it remembrith not
king, ne maister iuge; and alle thingis
bi talent it maketh to speke;
22 and thei
remembre not, whan thei han drunke,
frendshipe ne brotherhed, and after not
miche thei taken swerdis;
23 and whan of
win thei drownyn, and rijsen, thei han
no mynde that thei diden.
24 O men!
whether win is not passendeli strong,
that thus constreineth to do? And this
seid, he held his pes.
