1 Roboam forsothe wente in to Sychem;
thidre forsothe al Yrael was comen to
gydre that thei setten hym kyng.
2 The
whiche thing whan Jeroboam, the sone
of Nabath, that was in Egypt, hadde
herd; forsothe he hadde flowen thidre

beforn Salomon; anoon he is turned
a&yogh;eyn.
3 And thei clepiden hym, and he
came with al Ysrael, and thei speeken to
Roboam,
4 seiynge, Thi fadir with most
harde &yogh;ok oppressed us; thou comaunde
li&yogh;ter than thi fadir, `the whiche putte
to us a grete seruage; and a litil wi&yogh;t of
the charge put off, that we seruen to thee.
5 The whiche seith, Aftir thre days turneth
a&yogh;ein to me. And whan the puple was
gone aweie,
6 he wente in counseil with
the olde men, that stoden beforn his fadir
Salamon, while &yogh;it he lyuede, seyinge,
What &yogh;eue &yogh;e of counseil, that I answer
to the puple?
7 The whiche seyden to
hym, &YOGH;if thou plese to this puple, and
soften hem with mercyable wordis, thei
schulen seruen to thee al tyme.
8 And he
laft the counceil of olde men, and with
&yogh;onge men beganne to treeten, that with
hym were nurischid, and weren in the
felawschip of hym.
9 And he seide to hem,
What to &yogh;ou semeth? or what schal I answeren
to this puple, that seide to me,
Heue of the &yogh;ok, that thi fader putte vnto
us?
10 And thei answerden, as &yogh;onge men
and nurschid with hym in delices, and
seiden, Thus thou schalt answeren to the
puple that seide to thee, Thi fadir aggregide
oure &yogh;ok, thou putte off; thus
thou schalt answeren to hem, My lest
fynger is gretter than the reynes of my
fadir;
11 my fadir putte to &yogh;ou a grete &yogh;ok,
and I schal putten to a more wei&yogh;te; my
fader beet &yogh;ou with scourgis, I forsothe
schal beten &yogh;ou with scorpiouns.
12 Thanne
Jeroboam came and al the puple the
thidde day to Roboam, as he hadde comaundide
to hem.
13 And the kyng answerde
hard thingus, the counseil laft of
the eldre,
14 spokyn aftir the will of &yogh;ong

men; My fadir putte an heuy &yogh;ok to &yogh;ou,
and I schal maken heuyar; my fadir beet
&yogh;ou with scourgis, I forsothe schal beeten
&yogh;ou with scorpiouns.
15 And he assentide
not to the preyers of the puple; forsothe
the wille of God was, that his word
schuld ben fulfild, that he hadde spoken
by the hond of Achie Sylonyte to Jeroboam,
the sone of Nabath.
16 Al the puple
forsothe, the kyng seyinge harder thingus,
thus spak to hym, There is not to us
part in Dauid, ne heritage in the sone of
Ysay; turne a&yogh;ein in to thi tabernaclis,
Yrael, thou forsothe feed thin hous,
Dauith. And Yrael wente in to their
tabernaclis.
17 Vpon forsothe the sonis of
Yrael, that dwelleden in the cytees of
Juda, regnede Roboam.
18 And kyng
Roboam sente Aduram, that stode vpon
the tributis; and the sones of Yrael
stooneden hym, and he is deed. Bot
kyng Roboam hee&yogh;ede to stey&yogh;en up the
chaar, and flei&yogh; in to Jerusalem.
19 And
Yrael wente awey fro the hous of Dauid
vnto this day. It is done forsothe,
whanne al Yrael hadde herd, that Jeroboam
was turned a&yogh;ein, thei senten, and
clepeden hym, the companye gederd, and
setten kyng vpon al Yrael; ne any man
folowed the hous of Dauid, saue the
lynage of Juda and Beniamyn allon.
