CHAPTER XXIII.


1   Ða aras eall hyra menegeo ∧ lædia;ddon hine to pilate


2   ∧ agunnon hyne wregan ∧ cwædia;don; Ðisne we gem&edia;tton for-hwyrfende ure þeode. ∧ for-beodende &thaet; man þam casere gafol ne sealde. ∧ segð &thaet; he s&idia; crist cyning;


3   Ða ahsode pilatus hine eart þu iudea cining; Ða ∧swarude he þu hit segst;


4   Þa cwæþ pilatus to þam ealdrum ∧ þam werede ne finde &idia;c nanne intingan on þysum men;


5   Ða hlyddon hig ∧ cwædia;don. he astyrað þis folc lærende þurh ealle iudeam agynnende of [galilea oð hyder.


6   Ða pilatus gehyrde] galileam. he ahsude hwæðer he wædia;re galileisc man;


7   ∧ þa he gecneow &thaet; he wæs of herodes anwalde. he hine &adia;gen-sende to herode. he wæs on þam dagum on hierusalem;


8   Soðlice herodes fagnude þa he þæne hælend geseah. mycelre t&idia;de he wilnode hine geseon note forþam ðe ge-hyrde mycel be him; ∧ he hopode &thaet; he ge-s&adia;we sum tacen þe fram him gewurde;


9   Þa ahsode he hine manegum wordum ∧ he naht ne ∧swarude;


10   Ða st&odia;don þara sacerda ealdras hine an-rædlice wregende.

11   þa ofer-hogode herodes hine mid [hys] hyrede ∧ bysmrode hine gescrydne hwitum reafe. ∧ hyne agen-sende to pilate;


12   And on þam dæge wurdun herodes ∧ pilatus gefrynd. Soðlice hig wæron ædia;r gefynd him betwynan;


13   Ða cwæð pilatus to þara sacerda ealdrum ∧ duguðe ealdrum ∧ to þam folce.


14   ge brohton me þ&idia;sne man swylce he þis folc forhwyrfde. ∧ nu ic beforan eow ahsiende. ic nanne intingan findan ne mædia;g on þisum men of þam þe ge hine wregað


15   ne furðun herodes; Ic hine sende agen to him ∧ him naht þæs-lices deaðe gedon wæs.


16   Ic hine gebetne forlædia;te;


17   Niede he sceolde him forgyfan anne to hyra freols-dæge.


18   þa hrymde eall &thaet; folc æt-gædere ∧ cwæþ; Nim þisne ∧ forgyf us barrabban


19   se wæs for sumere twyrædnesse ∧ man-slyhte on cwertern asend;


20   Eft spæc pilatus to him ∧ wolde for-lætan þæne hælend;


21   Ða hrymdon hig ∧ cwædia;don ahoð hine ahoð hine;


22   Ða cwæð he to him þiddan siðe. hwæt dyde þes yfeles. ne mette ic nan þing yfeles on þissum men &thaet; he si deaþes scyldig. ic hine þreage ∧ forlæte;

23   And hig astodon ∧ mycelre st&edia;fne bædia;don &thaet; he wære ahangen; ∧ hyra st&edia;fna swiðredon.


25   ∧ he for-gef him þæne þe wæs for man-slyhte ∧ sumere sace on cwerterne. þone hi bædon ∧ þæne hælend he sealde to hyra willan;


26   And þa hig hine læddon hi gefengon sumne cyreniscne simonem. se com of þan tune ∧ þa rode him on-setton &thaet; he hi bædia;re æfter þam hælende.


27   him fylide mycel wered folces ∧ wifa þa hine heofun ∧ weopun;


28   Þa cwæþ se hælend bewend eala dohtra hierusalem. nelle ge ofer me wepan. ac wepað ofer eow sylfe. ∧ ofer eower bearn.


29   forðam þa dagas cumað on þam hig cweþað. eadige synt þa untymyndan ∧ in-noþas þe ne cendun ∧ þa breost þe ne sictun.


30   þonne agynnað hig cweðan to þam muntum feallað ofer &udia;s. ∧ to beorgum ofer-wreoð &udia;s.


31   forþam gif hig on gr&edia;num treowe þas þing doð hwæt doð hig on þam drigean;


32   And mid him wæron gelædde twegen manfulle &thaet; hig wædia;ron ofslegene;

33   And syððan hig comon on þa stowe þe is genemned caluarie &thaet; is heafod-pannan st&odia;w. þar hig hine hengon ∧ anne sceaþan on his swiðran healfe ∧ oðerne on his wynstran;


34   Ða cwæð se hælend. fædia;der. forgyf him forþam hig nyton hwæt hig doð; Soðlice hig dældon hys reaf ∧ wurpun hl&odia;tu.


35   ∧ &thaet; folc stod geanbidiende. ∧ þa ealdras hine tældon mid him ∧ cwædon; Oþre he ge-hælde gehæle hine sylfne gif he s&idia;g godes gecorena;


36   And þa cempan hine by[s]mredon ∧ him eced brohton


37   ∧ þus cwædon; Gif þu si iudea cining gedo þe halne;


38   Ða wæs his ofer-gewrit ofer hine awr&idia;ten. greciscum stafum ∧ ebreiscum. þis is iudea cining;


39   Án of þam sceaþum þe mid him hangode hine gremede ∧ cwæþ; Gif þu crist eart gehæl þe sylfne ∧ unc;


40   Ða ∧swarude se oþer ∧ hine þreade ∧ cwæþ; Ne þu god ne ondrætst &thaet; ðu eart on þære ylcan genyðerunge.


41   ∧ wyt witodlice be uncer ædia;rdædum on-foð; Soðlice þes naht yfeles ne dyde


42   ∧ he cwæþ to þam hælende; Drihten. gemun þu me þonne þu cymst on þin r&idia;ce;

43   Ða cwæþ se hælend to him; To-dæg þu bist mid me on paradiso;


44   Þa wæs nean seo syxte t&idia;d. ∧ þystro wæron ofer ealle eorþan oð þa nigoþan t&idia;de.


45   ∧ sunne wæs aþystrod ∧ þæs temples wahryft wearð toslyten on middan;


46   Ða cwæð se hædia;lend clypiende mycelre st&edia;fne; Fædia;der ic bebeode minne gast on þinre handa. ∧ þus cweþende he forþ-ferde;


47   Þa se hundred-man geseah &thaet; þar ge-worden wæs. he god wuldrode ∧ cwæð; Soþlice þes man wæs riht-wis.


48   ∧ eall wered þe æt þisse wæfer-synne wæron ∧ gesawon þa þing þe ge-wurdon. wæron agen gewende hyra breost beoton;


49   Ða stodon ealle hys cuþan feorran. ∧ þa w&idia;f þe him fyligdon fram galilea þas þing geseonde.


50   ∧ þa an man on n&adia;man iosep. se wæs gerefa g&odia;d wer ∧ rihtwis.


51   þes ne ge-þwærode hyra geþeahte ∧ hyra dædum fram arimathia iudea ceastre se sylfa ge-anbidude godes r&idia;ce.


52   þes genealæhte to pilate ∧ bæd þæs hælendes lichaman


53   ∧ nyðer-alede hyne ∧ on scytan be-feold ∧ lede hine on aheawene byrgene on þære næs þa gyt nænig al&edia;d;
