2   ∧ þara sacerda ealdras ∧ þa boceras smeadon hu hig hine forspildon; [Soðlice hig adredon him &thaet; folc;]

3   Ða eode satanas on iudam. se wæs oðre naman scarioth. an of þam twelfum.

4   þa ferde he ∧ spæc mid þara sacerda ealdor-mannum ∧ duguðe ealdrum hu he h&idia;ne him gesealde;

5   And hig fagenydun ∧ him weddedon feoh to syllenne.

6   ∧ he behet ∧ he sohte hu he eaðelicust hine be-æftan þære menego gesealde;

7   Ða com se dædia;g azimorum on þam hi woldon hyra eastron gewyrcan

8   ∧ he sende petrum. ∧ iohannem ∧ cwæð to him farað ∧ gearwiað us &thaet; we ure eastron gewyrcon;

9   Ða cwædon hig hwar wylt tu &thaet; we gearwion

10   ∧ he cwæð to him; Nu þænne ge on þa ceastre gað eow agen yrnð an man mid wæter-buce. filigeað him on &thaet; hus þe he in-gæð.

11   ∧ secgeað þam hus-hlaforde; Ure lareow þe segð hwar ys cumena hus. þar ic mine eastron wyrce mid minon leorning-cnihtum;

12   And he eow betæcð mycele healle gedæfte. gegearwiað þara;

13   Ða ferdun hig ∧ gemettun swa he him sæde. ∧ hig gegearwudun eastrun;

14   And þa tima wæs he sæt ∧ his twelfe apostolas mid him

15   ∧ he sædia;de him; Of gewilnunge ic gewilnude etan mid eow þas eastron ær ic forð-fare;

16   Ic eow secge &thaet; ic heonon-forð ne &edia;te. ær hyt sy on godes r&idia;ce gefylled;

17   And onfeng calice ∧ þancas dyde ∧ cwæð; Onfoð ∧ dælað betwux eow.

18   Soðlice ic eow secge &thaet; ic ne drince of þises win-geardes cynne ær godes r&idia;ce cume;

19   And he onfengc hlafe ∧ þancude ∧ him sealde. ∧ cwæð; Ðis is min lichama. se is for eow geseald doð þis on min gemynd;

20   And swa eac þæne calic. syððan he ge-eten hæfde ∧ cwæð; Ðes calic is niwe cyðnys on minum blode se bið for eow agoten;

21   Ðeah-hwæðere her is þæs lædia;wan hand mid me on mysan.

22   ∧ witodlice mannes sunu gæð æ[f]ter þam ðe him fore-stihtud wæs. þeah-hwæðere wa þam men þe he þurh geseald bið;

23   And hi agunnon betwux him smeagan hwylc of him &thaet; to donne wære;

24   ∧ hi flitun betwux him hwylc hyra wædia;re yldest;

25   Þa sædia;de he him cyningas wealdað hyra þeoda. ∧ ða ðe anweald ofer hig habbað synt frem-fulle genemned.

26   ac ne beo ge na swa; Ac gewurðe he swa swa gingra se þe yldra ys betwux eow; And se þe fore-stæppend ys beo he swylce he þ&edia;n sy;

27   Hwæðer ys yldra þe se þe ðenað þe se ðe sitt. witudlice se ðe sitt; Ic eom on eowrum midlene swa swa se þe ðenað;

28   Ge synt þe mid me þurh-wunedon on m&idia;num geswincum

29   ∧ ic eow dihte swa min fæder me rice dihte.

30   &thaet; ge eton ∧ drincon ofer mine m&ydia;san on m&idia;num r&idia;ce ∧ ge sitton ofer þrym-setl demende twelf mægða israhel;

31   Ða cwæð drihten. Simon Simon. nu satanas gyrnde &thaet; he eow hridrude swa swa hwædia;te;

32   Ic gebæd for þe &thaet; ðin geleafa ne geteorige; And þu æt sumum cyrre gewend ∧tryme þine gebroðru;

33   Ða cwæð he drihten. ic eom gearu to farenne mid þe. ge on cwertern ge on deað;

34   Ða cwæþ he. ic secge þe petrus. ne cræwþ se h&adia;na to-dædia;g ær þu me æt-sæcst;

35   Ða cwæð he to him þa ic eow sende butan seode ∧ codde ∧ ge-scy wæs eow ænig þing wana; Ða cwædon hig nan þing;

36   Ða cwæð he. ac n&udia; se þe hæfð seod gel&idia;ce nime codd. ∧ se ðe næfð sylle his tunecan ∧ bicge him swurd;

37   Soðlice ic eow secge &thaet; gyt scyl beon gefylled &thaet; be me awriten is. ∧ &thaet; he mid rihtwisum get&edia;ald wæs. witudlice þa þing þe be me synt habbað ende;

38   And hig cwædon. drihten. her synt twa swurd ∧ he cwæð &thaet; ys ge-noh;

39   And æfter gewunan he ut-eode on þæne munt oliuarum &thaet; ys ele-bergena. ∧ his leorning-cnihtas him fyligdon;

40   And þa he com to þære st&odia;we he sæde him. ge-biddað &thaet; ge on costnunge ne g&adia;n;

41   And he wæs fram him alocen swa mycel swa is anes stanes wyrp. ∧ gebigedum cneowum he hyne gebæd

42   ∧ cwæð; Fæder gif þu wylt. afyr þysne calic fram me þeah-hwæðere ne ge-wurðe min willa ac þin;

43   Þa æt-ywde him godes engel. of heofone ∧ hyne gestrangode

44   ∧ he wæs on gewinne ∧ hine lange gebæd ∧ his swat wæs swylce blodes dropan on eorðan yrnende.

45   ∧ þa he of gebede aras ∧ com to his leorning-cnihtum he hig funde slæpende for unrotnesse.

46   ∧ he sædia;de him. hwi slape ge. arisað ∧ biddað ge on costunge ne gan;

47   Him þa þa gyt sprecendum þa com &thaet; wered ∧ him to-foran eode &adia;n of þam twelfum se wæs genemned iudas ∧ he ge-nealæhte þam hælende &thaet; he hine cyste;

48   Ða cwæð se hælend iudas. mannes sunu þu mid cosse sylst;

49   Ða gesawon þa ðe him abutan wædia;ron &thaet; þær towerd wæs ∧ cwædia;don. drihten. slea we mid sw&udia;rde;

50   Ða sloh hyra &adia;n þara sacerda ealdres þeow ∧ hys swyðre eare of-acerf;

51   Þa ∧swarude se hælend lætað þus; ∧ þa he æt-hran hys eare he hyt gehædia;lde;

52   Ða cwæð se hælend to þam ealdor-mannum ∧ to þam witum ∧ þæs temples ealdrum; Ge ferdon swa swa to ^note anum sceaðan mid swurdum ∧ mid sahlum &thaet; ge me gefengon;

53   Ð&adia; ic wæs dæg-hwamlice on temple mid eow. ne aþenedon ge eower handa on me. ac þis is eower t&idia;d ∧ þystra anweald;

54   Ða namon hig hine ∧ læddon to þæra sacerda ealdres huse. ∧ petrus fyligde feorran;

55   And petrus wæs mid him on middan þam cafertune. þar hig æt þam fyre sæton;

56   Ða hine geseah sum þinen æt leohte sittende ∧ hine beheold. þa cwæð heo. ∧ þes wæs mid him;

57   Ða æt-soc he ∧ cwæð. eala w&idia;f ne can ic hyne;

58   And þa embe lytel hine ge-seah oðer. ∧ cwæð. þu eart of him; Ða cwæð petrus eala mann ic ne eom;

59   ∧ þa æfter lytlum fæce swylce &adia;nre t&idia;de. sum oðer seðde ∧ cwæð; Soðlice þes wæs mid him. witodlice he is galileisc;

60   Ða cwæð petrus. eala man nat ic hwæt þu segst; And þa hig &thaet; spræcon samninga s&edia; h&adia;na creow.

61   þa drihten bewende h&idia;ne ∧ beseah to petre. Ða gemunde petrus drihtnes wordes þe he cwæð. &thaet; ðu m&idia;n æt-sæcst. þriwa to-dæg ær se hana cr&adia;we;

62   Ða eode petrus &udia;t ∧ biterlice weop.

63   ∧ þa ðe þæne hælend heoldon hine bysmrodon ∧ beoton.

64   ∧ ofer-wrugon hys ansyne ∧ þurhsun his nebb. ∧ ahsodon hyne. arædia;d. hwylc ys. se ðe þe sloh;

65   And manega oðre þing hig him to cwædia;don dysigende;

66   And þa ða dædia;g wæs þa to-gædere comun þæs folces yldran ∧ þara sacerda ealder-menn ∧ boceras ∧ læddon hine to hyra gemote ∧ cwædia;don;

67   Sege us gif þu sy crist; Ða cwæþ he þeah ic eow secge. ge me ne ^note gelyfaþ.

68   þeh ic eow ahsige ge ne ∧swariað m&edia; ne ne forlætað;

69   Heonun-forð bið mannes sunu sittende on godes mægnes swyþran healfe;

70   Ða cwædia;don hig ealle. eart þu godes sunu; Ða cwæð he ge secgað &thaet; ic eom;

71   And hig cwædon. hwi gyrne w&edia; gyt gewitnesse. sylfe we gehyrdon of hys muðe;

CHAPTER XXIII.

1   Ða aras eall hyra menegeo ∧ lædia;ddon hine to pilate

2   ∧ agunnon hyne wregan ∧ cwædia;don; Ðisne we gem&edia;tton for-hwyrfende ure þeode. ∧ for-beodende &thaet; man þam casere gafol ne sealde. ∧ segð &thaet; he s&idia; crist cyning;

3   Ða ahsode pilatus hine eart þu iudea cining; Ða ∧swarude he þu hit segst;

4   Þa cwæþ pilatus to þam ealdrum ∧ þam werede ne finde &idia;c nanne intingan on þysum men;

5   Ða hlyddon hig ∧ cwædia;don. he astyrað þis folc lærende þurh ealle iudeam agynnende of [galilea oð hyder.

6   Ða pilatus gehyrde] galileam. he ahsude hwæðer he wædia;re galileisc man;

7   ∧ þa he gecneow &thaet; he wæs of herodes anwalde. he hine &adia;gen-sende to herode. he wæs on þam dagum on hierusalem;

8   Soðlice herodes fagnude þa he þæne hælend geseah. mycelre t&idia;de he wilnode hine geseon ^note forþam ðe ge-hyrde mycel be him; ∧ he hopode &thaet; he ge-s&adia;we sum tacen þe fram him gewurde;

9   Þa ahsode he hine manegum wordum ∧ he naht ne ∧swarude;

10   Ða st&odia;don þara sacerda ealdras hine an-rædlice wregende.

11   þa ofer-hogode herodes hine mid [hys] hyrede ∧ bysmrode hine gescrydne hwitum reafe. ∧ hyne agen-sende to pilate;

12   And on þam dæge wurdun herodes ∧ pilatus gefrynd. Soðlice hig wæron ædia;r gefynd him betwynan;

13   Ða cwæð pilatus to þara sacerda ealdrum ∧ duguðe ealdrum ∧ to þam folce.

14   ge brohton me þ&idia;sne man swylce he þis folc forhwyrfde. ∧ nu ic beforan eow ahsiende. ic nanne intingan findan ne mædia;g on þisum men of þam þe ge hine wregað

15   ne furðun herodes; Ic hine sende agen to him ∧ him naht þæs-lices deaðe gedon wæs.

16   Ic hine gebetne forlædia;te;

17   Niede he sceolde him forgyfan anne to hyra freols-dæge.

18   þa hrymde eall &thaet; folc æt-gædere ∧ cwæþ; Nim þisne ∧ forgyf us barrabban

19   se wæs for sumere twyrædnesse ∧ man-slyhte on cwertern asend;

20   Eft spæc pilatus to him ∧ wolde for-lætan þæne hælend;

21   Ða hrymdon hig ∧ cwædia;don ahoð hine ahoð hine;

22   Ða cwæð he to him þiddan siðe. hwæt dyde þes yfeles. ne mette ic nan þing yfeles on þissum men &thaet; he si deaþes scyldig. ic hine þreage ∧ forlæte;

23   And hig astodon ∧ mycelre st&edia;fne bædia;don &thaet; he wære ahangen; ∧ hyra st&edia;fna swiðredon.

25   ∧ he for-gef him þæne þe wæs for man-slyhte ∧ sumere sace on cwerterne. þone hi bædon ∧ þæne hælend he sealde to hyra willan;

26   And þa hig hine læddon hi gefengon sumne cyreniscne simonem. se com of þan tune ∧ þa rode him on-setton &thaet; he hi bædia;re æfter þam hælende.

27   him fylide mycel wered folces ∧ wifa þa hine heofun ∧ weopun;

28   Þa cwæþ se hælend bewend eala dohtra hierusalem. nelle ge ofer me wepan. ac wepað ofer eow sylfe. ∧ ofer eower bearn.

29   forðam þa dagas cumað on þam hig cweþað. eadige synt þa untymyndan ∧ in-noþas þe ne cendun ∧ þa breost þe ne sictun.

30   þonne agynnað hig cweðan to þam muntum feallað ofer &udia;s. ∧ to beorgum ofer-wreoð &udia;s.

31   forþam gif hig on gr&edia;num treowe þas þing doð hwæt doð hig on þam drigean;

32   And mid him wæron gelædde twegen manfulle &thaet; hig wædia;ron ofslegene;

33   And syððan hig comon on þa stowe þe is genemned caluarie &thaet; is heafod-pannan st&odia;w. þar hig hine hengon ∧ anne sceaþan on his swiðran healfe ∧ oðerne on his wynstran;

34   Ða cwæð se hælend. fædia;der. forgyf him forþam hig nyton hwæt hig doð; Soðlice hig dældon hys reaf ∧ wurpun hl&odia;tu.

35   ∧ &thaet; folc stod geanbidiende. ∧ þa ealdras hine tældon mid him ∧ cwædon; Oþre he ge-hælde gehæle hine sylfne gif he s&idia;g godes gecorena;

36   And þa cempan hine by[s]mredon ∧ him eced brohton

37   ∧ þus cwædon; Gif þu si iudea cining gedo þe halne;

38   Ða wæs his ofer-gewrit ofer hine awr&idia;ten. greciscum stafum ∧ ebreiscum. þis is iudea cining;

39   Án of þam sceaþum þe mid him hangode hine gremede ∧ cwæþ; Gif þu crist eart gehæl þe sylfne ∧ unc;

40   Ða ∧swarude se oþer ∧ hine þreade ∧ cwæþ; Ne þu god ne ondrætst &thaet; ðu eart on þære ylcan genyðerunge.

41   ∧ wyt witodlice be uncer ædia;rdædum on-foð; Soðlice þes naht yfeles ne dyde

42   ∧ he cwæþ to þam hælende; Drihten. gemun þu me þonne þu cymst on þin r&idia;ce;

43   Ða cwæþ se hælend to him; To-dæg þu bist mid me on paradiso;

44   Þa wæs nean seo syxte t&idia;d. ∧ þystro wæron ofer ealle eorþan oð þa nigoþan t&idia;de.

45   ∧ sunne wæs aþystrod ∧ þæs temples wahryft wearð toslyten on middan;

46   Ða cwæð se hædia;lend clypiende mycelre st&edia;fne; Fædia;der ic bebeode minne gast on þinre handa. ∧ þus cweþende he forþ-ferde;

47   Þa se hundred-man geseah &thaet; þar ge-worden wæs. he god wuldrode ∧ cwæð; Soþlice þes man wæs riht-wis.

48   ∧ eall wered þe æt þisse wæfer-synne wæron ∧ gesawon þa þing þe ge-wurdon. wæron agen gewende hyra breost beoton;

49   Ða stodon ealle hys cuþan feorran. ∧ þa w&idia;f þe him fyligdon fram galilea þas þing geseonde.

50   ∧ þa an man on n&adia;man iosep. se wæs gerefa g&odia;d wer ∧ rihtwis.

51   þes ne ge-þwærode hyra geþeahte ∧ hyra dædum fram arimathia iudea ceastre se sylfa ge-anbidude godes r&idia;ce.

52   þes genealæhte to pilate ∧ bæd þæs hælendes lichaman

53   ∧ nyðer-alede hyne ∧ on scytan be-feold ∧ lede hine on aheawene byrgene on þære næs þa gyt nænig al&edia;d;

54   And þa wæs se dæg parasceue &thaet; is gegearwunge. ∧ sæter-dæg on-lyhte;

55   Ða w&idia;f þe him fyligdon þe comon mid him of galilea hig gesawon þa byrgene. ∧ hu his lichama aled wæs

56   ∧ hig cyrdon. ∧ gea[r]wodun wyrtgemang ∧ sealfa ∧ on sætern-dæg hig gestildon æfter bebode; CHAPTER XXIV.

1   On anum reste-dæge swyþe ædia;r on dægered hig comun to þære byrgene ∧ bædia;ron mid him þa wyrt-gemang þe hi ge-gearwodon.

2   ∧ hig gemetton þæne st&adia;n awyltne of þære byrgene;

3   And þa hi in to þære byrgene eodon. hig ne gemetton n&adia; þæs hælendes lichaman;

4   And þa wæs geworden þa hig on m&odia;de &adia;færyde wædia;ron be þyson þa stodon twegen weras wið h&idia;g on hw&idia;tum reafe.

5   ∧ þa hig adredon ∧ hyra andwlitan on eorþan hyldun hig cwædia;on to him; Hwi sece g&edia; lybbendne mid deadum.

6   nis he h&edia;r ac he ar&adia;s. geþencað hu he spæc wið eow þa g&ydia;t þa he wæs on galilea

7   ∧ cwæð; Ðæt mannes sunu bið geseald on handa synfulra manna ∧ beon &adia;hangen ∧ þy þriddan dædia;ge ar&idia;san.

8   ∧ hig gemundon his worda

9   ∧ hig gewendon fram þære byrgene ∧ cyddon eall þis þam endlufenum ∧ eallum oðrum

10   Soþlice wæs maria magdalene. ∧ iohanna. ∧ maria iacobi. ∧ oðre þe mid him wæron þ&adia; sædon þas þing þam apostolum

11   ∧ þas word wæron geþuhte beforan him swa woffunng ∧ hig ne ge-lyfdon him;

12   Þa ar&adia;s petrus ∧ arn to þære byrgyne. ∧ alutende he geseah þa lin-wæda sylfe al&edia;de. ∧ he ferde wundrigende þæs þar ge-worden wæs.

14   ∧ hig spæcon him betwynan be eallum þam þe þar ge-wordene wæron;

15   And þa hig spelledon ∧ mid him smeadon. se hælend genealæchte ∧ ferde mid him;

16   Soðlice hyra eagan wærun forhæfde &thaet; hig hine ne ge-cneowun.

17   ∧ he cwæð to him hwæt synt þa spæca þe gyt recceað inc betwynan gangende. ∧ synt unr&odia;te;

18   Ða ∧swarude him &adia;n. þæs nama wæs cleofas ∧ cwæð; Eart þu &adia;na forwrecen on hierusalem. ∧ nystest þu þa þing þe on hyre gewordene synt on ðysum dagum;

19   He sædia;de þa. hwæt synt þa þing; And hig sædia;don be þam nazareniscean hælende. se wæs wer ∧ witega mihtig. on spæce ∧ on weorce be-foran g&odia;de ∧ eallum folce.

20   ∧ hu hine sealdun þa heah-sacerdas ∧ ure ealdras on deaðes genyþerunge ∧ ahengon hine.

21   we hopedon &thaet; he to alysenne wære israhel; ∧ nu is se ðridda dæg to-dæg &thaet; þis wæs geworden.

22   ∧ eac sume w&idia;f &odia;f &udia;rum us br&edia;gdon. þa wædia;ron ær leohte æt þære byrgene.

23   ∧ na his lichaman gemettun. hig comon ∧ sædun &thaet; hig gesawun engla gesihðe. þa secgað hine lybban.

24   ∧ þa ferdun sume of &udia;rum to þædia;re byrgyne ∧ swa gemetton swa þa w&idia;f sædia;don hine hig ne gesawon;

25   Ða cwæð se hælend to him eala dysegan ∧ on heortan lædia;te to gelyfenne eallum þam þe witegan spæcon.

26   hu ne gebyrede criste þas þing þoligean. ∧ swa on his wuldor g&adia;n;

27   And he rehte him of moyse ∧ of eallum haligum gewritum þe be him awritene wæron;

28   ∧ hig genea[læ]hton þam castele þe hig to ferdun ∧ he dyde swylce he fyr faran wolde

29   ∧ hig nyddon hyne ∧ cwædia;don. w&udia;na mid unc forþam þe hit æfen-læcð ∧ se dæg wæs &adia;hyld. ∧ he in-eode &thaet; he mid him wunude;

30   ∧ þa he mid him sæt he onfeng hl&adia;f ∧ hine bletsude ∧ bræc ∧ him ræhte;

31   Þa wurdon hyra eagan geopenude ∧ hig gecneowon hine ∧ he gewat fram him.

32   And hig cwædia;don him betwynan næs uncer heorte byrnende þa he on wege wið unc spæc. ∧ unc halige gewritu ont&ydia;nde;

33   And hig arison on þære ylcan t&idia;de ∧ wendon to hierusalem ∧ gemetton endlufan gegaderude ∧ þa ðe mid him wædia;ron.

34   ∧ cwædun &thaet; drihten soðlice aras ∧ simone æt-ywde;

35   And hig rehton þa þing þa ðe on w&edia;ge gewordene wædia;ron. ∧ hu hig hine on-cneowun on hlafes br&idia;ce;

36    ^note Soðlice þa hig þis spræcon se hælend st&odia;d on hyra midlene. ∧ sæde him. sib sy eow ic hit eom ne on-dræde ge eow;

37   Ða wædia;ron hig gedrefede ∧ afærede ∧ hig w&edia;ndon &thaet; hig gast gesawon;

38   And he sædia;de him hwi synt ge gedrefede ∧ geþancas on eowre heortan astigað;

39   Geseoð mine handa ∧ mine fet &thaet; ic sylf hit eom. gr&adia;piað. ∧ geseoð &thaet; g&adia;st næfþ flædia;sc ∧ ban. swa ge ge-seoð me habban;

40   And þa he þis sæde he æt-eowde him fet ∧ handa;

41   Ða cwæð he to him þa hig þa gyt ne gelyfdon ∧ for gef&edia;an wundredon; Hæbbe ge her ænig þing to etenne

42   ∧ hig brohton him dæl gebræddes fisces ∧ beo-br&edia;ad

43   And þa he æt beforan him he nam þa lafa ∧ him sealde

44   ∧ cwæð to him; Þis synt þa word þe ic spæc to eow þa ic wæs þa gyt mid eow forþam þe hit is neod &thaet; beon ealle þing gefyllede þe be me awritene synt on moyses ædia;. ∧ on witegum ∧ on sealmum be m&edia;;

45   Ða atynde he him andgyt &thaet; hig ongeton h&adia;lige gewr&idia;tu.

46   ∧ he cwæð to him &thaet; ðus is awriten ∧ þus gebyrede crist þolian. ∧ þy ðriddan dæge of deaðum ar&idia;san

47   ∧ beon bodud on his naman dædbote ∧ synna forgyfenesse on ealle þe&odia;da. agynnendum fram hierusalem;

48   Soðlice ge synt þinga gewitan

49   ∧ ic sende on eow mines fæder beh&adia;t; Sitte ge on ceastre oð ge syn ufene gescrydde;

50   Soðlice he gelædde hig &udia;t on bethan&idia;am ∧ he bletsode hig his handum &udia;p-ahafenum.

51   ∧ hit wæs geworden þa he bletsude h&idia;g. he ferde fram him ∧ wæs f&edia;red on heofen.

52   ∧ hig gebiddende hig gehwurfon on hierusalem mid mycelum gefean.

53   ∧ hig wæron symle on þam temple god hergende ∧ hyne eac bletsigende. Amen.
