   1   I love the Lord, for he has heard me
    and listens to my prayer;
   2   for he has given me a hearing
    whenever I have cried to him.
   3   The cords of death bound me,
    Sheol held me in its grip.
  Anguish and torment held me fast;
     4   so I invoked the Lord by name,
  ‘Deliver me, O Lord, I beseech thee;
    for I am thy slave.’ note
   5   Gracious is the Lord and righteous,
    our God is full of compassion.
   6   The Lord preserves the simple-hearted;
    I was brought low and he saved me.
   7   Be at rest once more, my heart,
    for the Lord has showered gifts upon you.
   8   He has note rescued me from death
    and my feet from stumbling. note
   9   I will walk in the presence of the Lord
    in the land of the living.

   10   I was sure that I should be swept away,
    and my distress was bitter.
   11   In panic I cried,
    ‘How faithless all men are!’
   12   How can I repay the Lord
    for all his gifts to me?
   13   I will take in my hands the cup of salvation
    and invoke the Lord by name.
   14   I will pay my vows to the Lord
    in the presence of all his people.
   15   A precious thing in the Lord's sight
    is the death of those who die faithful to him.
   16    note I am thy slave, thy slave-girl's son;
    thou hast undone the bonds that bound me.
   17   To thee will I bring a thank-offering
    and invoke the Lord by name.
   18   I will pay my vows to the Lord
    in the presence of all his people,
