LETTER LV. HARRINGTON to WORTHY. BOSTON.

[figure description] Page 127.[end figure description]

Am I a child that I &longs;hould weep?—
I have been meditating on the cau&longs;e of my
calamities—Why did my father love Maria
or rather, why did I love their Harriot?
Cure on this tyrant cu&longs;tom that dooms &longs;uch
helple&longs;s children to oblivion or infamy!
Had I known her to have been my &longs;i&longs;ter, my
love would have been regular---I &longs;hould
have loved her as a &longs;i&longs;ter---I &longs;hould have
marked her beauty---I &longs;hould have delighted
in protecting it. I &longs;hould have ob&longs;erved
her growing virtues---I &longs;hould have been
happy in cheri&longs;hing their growth. But
alas! She is gone—and I cannot &longs;tay---I
&longs;tand on the thre&longs;hold of a va&longs;t eternity.
