The Uision of Isaiah the sonne of Amoz, which hee sawe concerning Iudah and Ierusalem, in the dayes of Uzziah, Iotham, Ahaz, & Hezekiah kings of Iudah.

Heare, O ^note heauens, and giue eare, O earth: for the Lord hath spoken; I haue nourished and brought vp children, and they haue rebelled against me.

The ^note oxe knoweth his owner, and the asse his masters cribbe: but Israel doeth not know, my people doeth not consider.

4   
Ah sinnefull nation, a people ^note laden with iniquitie, a seede of euill doers, children that are corrupters: they haue forsaken the Lord, they haue prouoked the Holy one of Israel vnto anger, they are ^note gone away backward.

5   
¶ Why should yee be stricken any more? yee will ^note reuolt more and more: the whole head is sicke, and the whole heart faint.

From the sole of the foote, euen vnto the head, there is no soundnesse in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they haue not beene closed, Sacrifice reiected. neither bound vp, neither mollified with ^note oyntment.

Your countrey is ^note desolate, your cities are burnt with fire: your land, strangers deuoure it in your presence, and it is desolate ^note as ouerthrowen by strangers.

And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged citie.

9   
Except the Lord of hostes had ^note left vnto vs a very small remnant, we should haue beene as ^note Sodom, and we should haue bene like vnto Gomorrah.

¶ Heare the word of the Lord, ye rulers of Sodom, giue eare vnto the Law of our God, yee people of Gomorrah.

To what purpose is the multitude of your ^note sacrifices vnto me, sayth the Lord? I am full of the burnt offerings of rammes, and the fat of fedde beasts, and I delight not in the blood of bullockes, or of lambes, or of ^note hee goates.

When ye come to ^note appeare before mee, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?

13   
Bring no more vaine oblations, incense is an abomination vnto me: the new Moones, and Sabbaths, the calling of assemblies I cannot away with; it is ^note iniquitie, euen the solemne meeting.

Your new Moones, and your appointed Feasts my soule hateth: they are a trouble vnto me, I am weary to beare them.

15   
And when ye spread foorth your ^note handes, I will hide mine eyes from you; yea, when yee ^note make many prayers I will not heare: your hands are full of ^{note note} blood.

¶ Wash yee, make you cleane, put away the euill of your doings from before mine eyes, ^note cease to doe euill,

Learne to doe well, seeke iudgement, ^note relieue the oppressed, iudge the fatherlesse, plead for the widow.

Come now and let vs reason together, saith the Lord: though your sinnes be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimsin, they shall be as wooll.

If yee be willing and obedient, yee shall eate the good of the land.

20   
But if yee refuse and rebell, yee shalbe deuoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

¶ Howe is the faithfull citie become an harlot? it was full of iudgement, righteousnesse lodged in it; but now murtherers.

22   
Thy siluer is become drosse, thy wine mixt with water.

23   
Thy princes are rebellious and companions of theeues: euery one loueth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they ^note iudge not the fatherlesse, neither doth the cause of the widowe come vnto them.

Therefore, saith the Lord, the Lord of hostes, the mighty one of Israel; Ah, I will ease me of mine aduersaries, and auenge me of mine enemies.

25   
¶ And I will turne my hand vpon thee, and ^note purely purge away thy drosse, and take away all thy tinne.

26   
And I will restore thy iudges as at the first, and thy counsellers as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called the citie of righteousnesse, the faithfull citie.

27   
Zion shall be redeemed with iudgement, and ^note her conuerts with righteousnesse.

28   
¶ And the ^{note note} destruction of the transgressours and of the sinners shall be together: and they that forsake the Lord shall be consumed.

29   
For they shall be ashamed of the okes which yee haue desired, and yee shalbe confounded for the gardens that yee haue chosen.

30   
For yee shall be as an oke whose leafe fadeth, and as a garden that hath no water.

31   
And the strong shall be as towe, ^note and the maker of it as a sparke, and they shall both burne together, and none shall quench them. The Gentiles called. 681 CHAP. II. 1 Isaiah prophecieth the comming of Christs kingdome. 6 Wickednesse is the cause of Gods forsaking. 10 Hee exhorteth to feare, because of the powerfull effects of Gods Maiestie.

The word that Isaiah, the sonne of Amoz, sawe concerning Iudah and Ierusalem.

And it shall come to passe in the ^note last dayes, that the mountaine of the Lords house shall be ^note established in the top of the mountaines, and shall be exalted aboue the hilles; and all nations shall flow vnto it.

And many people shall goe ∧ say; Come yee and let vs go vp to the mountaine of the Lord, to the house of the God of Iacob, and he will teach vs of his wayes, and we will walke in his pathes: for out of Zion shall goe forth the lawe, and the word of the Lord from Ierusalem.

And hee shall iudge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beate their swords into plow-shares, and their speares into ^note pruning hookes: nation shall not lift vp sword against nation, neither shall they learne warre any more.

5   
O house of Iacob, come yee, and let vs walke in the light of the Lord.

6   
¶ Therefore thou hast forsaken thy people the house of Iacob; because they be replenished ^note from the East, and are soothsayers like the Philistines, and they ^note please themselues in the children of strangers.

Their land also is full of siluer and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures: their land is also full of horses; neither is there any end of their charets.

Their land also is full of idoles: they worship the worke of their owne hands, that which their owne fingers haue made.

And the meane man boweth downe, and the great man humbleth himselfe; therefore forgiue them not.

¶ Enter into the rocke, and hide thee in the dust, for feare of the Lord, and for the glory of his Maiestie.

The ^note loftie lookes of man shalbe humbled, and the hautines of men shalbe bowed downe: and the Lord alone

Pride threatned. shalbe exalted in that day.

For the day of the Lord of hostes shall bee vpon euery one that is proud and loftie, and vpon euery one that is lifted vp, and he shalbe brought low;

13   
And vpon all the Cedars of Lebanon, that are high and lifted vp; and vpon all the okes of Bashan,

14   
And vpon all the high mountaines, and vpon all the hilles that are lifted vp,

15   
And vpon euery high tower, and vpon euery fenced wall,

16   
And vpon all the ships of Tarshish, and vpon all ^note pleasant pictures.

17   
And the loftinesse of man shall be bowed downe, and the hautinesse of men shalbe made low: and the Lord alone shalbe exalted in that day.

And ^note the idoles hee shall vtterly abolish.

19   
And they shall goe into the ^note holes of the rocks, and into the caues of the ^note earth for feare of the Lord, and for the glory of his Maiestie; when hee ariseth to shake terribly the earth.

In that day a man shall cast ^note his idoles of siluer, and his idoles of golde ^note which they made each one for himselfe to worship, to the moules and to the battes:

To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rockes, for feare of the Lord, and for the glorie of his Maiestie; when hee ariseth to shake terribly the earth.

Cease ye from man whose breath is in his nostrels: for wherein is hee to be accounted of? 682 CHAP. III. 1 The great confusion which commeth by sinne. 9 The impudencie of the people. 12 The oppression and couetousnesse of the rulers. 16 The iudgements which shall be for the pride of the women.

For behold, the Lord, the Lord of hostes doeth take away from Ierusalem, and from Iudah, the stay and the staffe, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water,

The mighty man, and the man of warre; the Iudge and the Prophet, and the prudent, and the ancient,

3   
The captaine of fiftie, and the ^note honourable Of oppression. man, and the counseller, and the cunning artificer, and the ^note eloquent oratour.

4   
And I will giue ^note children to bee their Princes, and babes shall rule ouer them.

5   
And the people shall be oppressed, euery one by another, and euery one by his neighbour: the childe shall behaue himselfe proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable.

When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruine bee vnder thy hand:

In that day ^note shall he sweare, saying, I will not be an ^note healer: for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of the people.

For Ierusalem is ruined, ∧ Iudah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the Lord, to prouoke the eyes of his glorie.

¶ The shew of their countenance doeth witnesse against them, and they declare their sinne as ^note Sodom, they hide it not: woe vnto their soule, for they haue rewarded euill vnto themselues.

Say yee to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eate the fruit of their doings.

11   
Woe vnto the wicked, it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his handes shalbe ^note giuen him.

¶ As for my people, children are their oppressours, and women rule ouer them: O my people, ^note they which lead thee, cause thee to erre, and ^note destroy the way of thy paths.

13   
The Lord standeth vp to plead, and standeth to iudge the people.

14   
The Lord will enter into iudgement with the ancients of his people, and the Princes thereof: for ye haue ^note eaten vp the Uineyard; the spoile of the poore is in your houses.

15   
What meane yee that yee beat my people to pieces, and grinde the faces of the poore, saith the Lord God of hosts?

16   
¶ Moreouer the Lord saith; Because the daughters of Zion are hautie, and walke with stretched forth necks, and ^note wanton eyes, walking and ^note mincing as they goe, and making a tinkeling with their feet:

Therefore the Lord will smite

Womens pride. with a scab the crowne of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the Lord will ^note discouer their secret parts.

18   
In that day the Lord will take away the brauery of their tinckling ornaments about their feete, and their ^note caules, and their round tyres like the Moone.

19   
The ^note chaines, and the bracelets, and the ^note mufflers,

20   
The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legges, and the headbands, and the ^note tablets, and the earerings,

21   
The rings, and nose-iewels,

22   
The changeable sutes of apparell, and the mantles, and the wimples, and the crisping pinnes,

23   
The glasses, and the fine linnen, and the hoods, and the vailes.

24   
And it shall come to passe, that in steade of sweete smell, there shall bee stinke; and in stead of a girdle, a rent; and in stead of well set haire, baldnesse; and in stead of a stomacher, a girding of sackecloth; and burning, in stead of beautie.

25   
Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy ^note mightie in the warre.

26   
And her gates shall lament and mourne; and she being ^note desolate, shall sit vpon the ground. 683 CHAP. IIII. In the extremitie of euils, Christes kingdome shall be a Sanctuarie.

And in that day seuen women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eate our owne bread, ∧ weare our owne apparell: onely ^note let vs be called by thy name, ^note to take away our reproch.

In that day shall the Branch of the Lord be ^note beautifull and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shalbe excellent and comely ^note for them that are escaped of Israel.

And it shall come to passe, that hee that is left in Zion, and hee that remaineth in Ierusalem, shall be called Holy, euen euery one that is written ^note among the liuing in Ierusalem,

When the Lord shall haue washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall haue purged the blood of Ierusalem from the middest thereof, by the spirit of iudgement, and by the spirit of burning. Gods vineyard.

And the Lord will create vpon euery dwelling place of mount Zion, and vpon her assemblies a ^note cloude, and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night; for ^note vpon all the glory shall be ^note a defence.

And there shalbe a tabernacle for a shadow in the day time from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a couert from storme and from raine. 684 CHAP. V. 1 Vnder the Parable of a Vineyard, God excuseth his seuere iudgement. 8 His iudgements vpon couetousnesse, 11 Vpon lasciuiousnesse, 13 Vpon impietie, 20 and vpon iniustice. 26 The executioners of Gods iudgements.

Now will I sing to my welbeloued, a song of my beloued touching his vineyard: my wellbeloued hath a ^note vineyard in a ^note very fruitfull hill.

And hee ^note fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a towre in the middest of it, and also ^note made a winepresse therein: and he looked that it should bring foorth grapes, and it brought foorth wilde grapes.

And now, O inhabitants of Ierusalem, and men of Iudah, Iudge, I pray you, betwixt me and my Uineyard.

4   
What could haue beene done more to my Uineyard, that I haue not done in it? wherefore when I looked that it should bring foorth grapes, brought it foorth wilde grapes?

5   
And now goe to; I will tell you what I will doe to my Uineyard, I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten vp; and breake downe the wall thereof, and it shall be ^note troden downe.

And I will lay it waste; it shall not be pruned, nor digged, but there shall come vp briars and thornes: I will also command the cloudes, that they raine no raine vpon it.

7   
For the Uineyard of the Lord of hostes is the house of Israel, and the men of Iudah ^note his pleasant plant: and he looked for iudgement, but beholde ^note oppression; for righteousnesse, but behold a crie.

¶ Woe vnto them that ioyne

Couetousnesse and riot are threatened. ^note house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth.

^noteIn mine eares said the Lord of hostes, ^note Of a trueth many houses shall be desolate, euen great and faire without inhabitant.

10   
Yea ten acres of vineyard shall yeeld one Bath, and the seed of an Homer shall yeeld an Ephah.

11   
¶ Woe vnto them that rise vp earely in the morning, that they may follow strong ^note drink, that continue vntill night, till wine ^note enflame them.

12   
And the harpe and the viole, the tabret and pipe, and wine are in their feasts: but they regard not the worke of the Lord, neither consider the operation of his hands.

13   
¶ Therefore my people are gone into captiuitie, because they haue no knowledge: and ^note their honourable men are famished, aud their multitude dried vp with thirst.

14   
Therefore hell hath enlarged her selfe, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pompe, and hee that reioyceth, shall descend into it.

15   
And ^note the meane man shall bee brought downe, and the mightie man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the loftie shall be humbled.

16   
But the Lord of hosts shalbe exalted in iudgement, and ^note God that is holy, shall bee sanctified in righteousnesse.

17   
Then shall the lambes feed after their maner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eate.

18   
Woe vnto them that draw iniquitie with cords of vanitie, and sinne, as it were with a cart rope:

19   
That say, Let him make speede, and hasten his worke, that we may see it: and let the counsell of the holy one of Israel draw nigh and come, that wee may know it.

20   
¶ Woe vnto them ^note that call euill good, and good euill, that put darkenes for light, and light for darkenesse, that put bitter for sweete, and sweete for bitter.

21   
Woe vnto them that are ^note wise in their owne eyes, and prudent ^note in their owne sight.

22   
Woe vnto them that are mightie to drinke wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drinke. Couetousnesse and riot are threatened.

23   
Which ^note iustifie the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousnes of the righteous from him.

24   
Therfore as the ^note fire deuoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaffe, so their root shall be rottennes, and their blossome shall goe vp as dust: because they haue cast away the Lawe of the Lord of hosts, and despised the worde of the Holy One of Israel.

25   
Therefore is the anger of the Lord kindled against his people, and he hath stretched foorth his hande against them, and hath smitten them: and the hilles did tremble, and their carkeises were ^note torne in the midst of the streets: ^note for all this, his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

¶ And he will lift vp an ensigne to the nations from farre, and wil hisse vnto them from the end of the earth: and behold, they shall come with speed swiftly.

27   
None shalbe weary, nor stumble amongst them: none shall slumber nor sleepe, neither shall the girdle of their loynes be loosed, nor the latchet of their shooes be broken.

28   
Whose arrowes are sharpe, and all their bowes bent, their horses hoofs shall bee counted like flint, and their wheeles like a whirlewind.

Their roaring shalbe like a lyon, they shall roare like yong lions: yea they shal roare and lay hold of the pray, and shall carie it away safe, and none shall deliuer it.

And in that day they shall roare against them, like the roaring of the sea: and if one looke vnto the land, behold darkenesse and ^note sorrow, ^note and the light is darkened in the heauens therof. 685 CHAP. VI. 1 Isaiah in a vision of the Lord in his glory, 5 being terrified, is confirmed for his Message. 9 He sheweth the obstinacie of the people, vnto their desolation. 13 A remnant shall bee saued.

In the yeere that King Uzziah died, I ^note saw also the Lord sitting vpon a throne, high and lifted vp, and his ^note traine filled the Temple.

Aboue it stood the Seraphims: each one had sixe wings, with twaine he

Vncleane lips. couered his face, and with twaine hee couered his feete, and with twaine hee did flie.

And ^note one cryed vnto another, and sayd; ^note Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hostes, ^note the whole earth is full of his glory.

And the posts of the ^note doore moued at the voyce of him that cryed, and the house was filled with smoke.

¶ Then sayd I; woe is me; for I am ^note vndone, because I am a man of vncleane lippes, and I dwell in the midst of a people of vncleane lippes: for mine eyes haue seene the king, the Lord of hostes.

Then flew one of the Seraphims vnto mee, ^note hauing a liue-cole in his hand, which hee had taken with the tongs from off the altar.

And ^note he laide it vpon my mouth, and sayd, Loe, this hath touched thy lippes, and thine iniquitie is taken away, and thy sinne purged.

Also I heard the voyce of the Lord, saying; Whom shall I send, and who will goe for ^note vs? Then I saide; ^note Heere am I, send me.

¶ And he sayd, Goe and tell this people; ^note Heare yee ^note indeede, but vnderstand not: and see yee indeed, but perceiue not.

Make the heart of this people fat, and make their eares heauy, and shut their eyes: lest they see with their eyes, and heare with their eares, and vnderstand with their heart, and conuert and be healed.

Then sayd I; Lord, how long? And hee answered, Untill the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be vtterly ^note desolate,

12   
And the Lord haue remoued men farre away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land.

13   
¶ But yet in it shalbe a tenth, ^note and it shall returne, and shall be eaten: as a Teyle tree, and as an Oke whose ^note substance is in them, when they cast their leaues: so the holy seede shall be the substance thereof. 686 CHAP. VII. 1 Ahaz, being troubled with feare of Rezin and Pekah, is comforted by Isaiah. 10 Ahaz, hauing liberty to choose a signe, and refusing it, hath for a signe, Christ promised. 17 His iudgement is prophecied to come by Assyria. Christ promised, and called Immanuel.

And it came to passe in the dayes of ^note Ahaz the sonne of Iotham, the sonne of Uzziah king of Iudah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah, the sonne of Remaliah king of Israel, went vp towards Ierusalem to warre against it, but could not preuaile against it.

And it was told the house of Dauid, saying, Syria is ^note confederate with Ephraim: and his heart was moued, and the heart of his people as the trees of the wood are mooued with the wind.

Then sayd the Lord vnto Isaiah; Goe forth now to meete Ahaz, thou, ∧ ^note Shear-iashub thy sonne, at the end of the ^note conduit of the vpper poole ^note in the high way of the fullers field.

And say vnto him; Take heede and be quiet: feare not, ^note neither be faint hearted for the two tailes of these smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria, and of the sonne of Remaliah.

Because Syria, Ephraim, and the sonne of Remaliah haue taken euill counsell against thee, saying;

6   
Let vs goe vp against Iudah and ^note vexe it, and let vs make a breach therein for vs, and set a king in the midst of it, euen the sonne of Tabeal.

7   
Thus saith the Lord God; It shall not stand, neither shall it come to passe.

8   
For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin, and within threescore and fiue yeeres shall Ephraim be broken, ^note that it be not a people.

9   
And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliahs sonne: ^note if yee will not beleeue, surely yee shall not be established.

¶ ^note Moreouer the Lord spake againe vnto Ahaz, saying;

Aske thee a signe of the Lord thy God; ^note aske it either in the depth, or in the height aboue.

12   
But Ahaz sayd, I will not aske, neither will I tempt the Lord.

13   
And he sayd; Heare yee now, O house of Dauid; Is it a small thing for you to wearie men, but will yee wearie my God also?

14   
Therefore the Lord himselfe shal giue you a signe: ^note Behold, a Uirgine shall conceiue and beare a Sonne, and

Christ promised, and called Immanuel. ^note shall call his name Immanuel.

15   
Butter and hony shall he eat, that hee may know to refuse the euill, and choose the good.

16   
For before the childe shall know to refuse the euill and choose the good; the land that thou abhorrest, shalbe forsaken of both her kings.

17   
¶ The Lord shall bring vpon thee and vpon thy people, and vpon thy fathers house, dayes that haue not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Iudah; euen the King of Assyria.

18   
And it shall come to passe in that day, that the Lord shall hisse for the flie, that is in the vttermost part of the riuers of Egypt, and for the Bee that is in the land of Assyria.

And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the desolate valleys, and in the holes of the rockes, and vpon all thornes, and vpon all ^note bushes.

20   
In the same day shall the Lord shaue with a ^note rasor that is hired, namely by them beyond the riuer, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the haire of the feet: and it shal also consume the beard.

21   
And it shall come to passe in that day, that a man shal nourish a yong cow and two sheepe.

22   
And it shall come to passe, for the abundance of milke that they shall giue, he shal eate butter: for butter and hony shall euery one eate, that is left ^note in the land.

And it shall come to passe in that day, that euery place shalbe, where there were a thousand Uines at a thousand siluerlings, it shall euen be for briers and thornes.

24   
With arrowes and with bowes shall men come thither; because all the land shall become briars and thornes.

25   
And on all hilles that shalbe digged with the mattocke, there shall not come thither the feare of briars and thornes: but it shall bee for the sending foorth of oxen, and for the treading of lesser cattell. 687 CHAP. VIII. 1 In Maher-shalal-hash-baz, hee prophecieth that Syria and Israel shalbe subdued by Assyria. 5 Iudah likewise for their infidelitie. 9 Gods iudgements shalbe vnresistable. 11 Comfort shalbe to them that feare God. 19 Great afflictions to idolaters. Against infidelitie.

Moreouer the Lord said vnto mee, Take thee a great roule, and write in it with a mans penne, concerning ^note Maher-shalal-hash-baz.

And I tooke vnto mee faithfull witnesses to record, Uriah the Priest, and Zechariah the sonne of Ieberechiah.

And I ^note went vnto the Prophetesse, and shee conceiued and bare a sonne, then said the Lord to mee, Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz.

For before the childe shall haue knowledge to cry, My father and my mother, the ^note riches of Damascus, and the spoile of Samaria shalbe taken away before the king of Assyria.

¶ The Lord spake also vnto me againe, saying,

For so much as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that goe softly, and reioyce in Rezin, and Remaliahs sonne:

7   
Now therefore behold, the Lord bringeth vp vpon them the waters of the riuer strong and many, euen the king of Assyria, and all his glory: and he shall come vp ouer all his channels, and goe ouer all his bankes.

And hee shall passe through Iudah, he shall ouerflow and goe ouer, he shall reach euen to the necke; and ^note the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.

¶ Associate your selues, O ye people, ^note and yee shalbe broken in pieces; and giue eare all ye of farre countreys: gird your selues, and ye shalbe broken in pieces; gird your selues, and ye shalbe broken in pieces.

Take counsell together, and it shall come to nought: speake the word, and it shall not stand; for God is with vs.

11   
¶ For the Lord spake thus to me ^note with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walke in the way of this people, saying,

Sanctifie the Lord of hostes himselfe, and let him bee your feare, and let him be your dread.

Seeke God onely. of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a ginne, and for a snare to the inhabitants of Ierusalem.

And many among them shall ^note stumble and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.

Binde vp the Testimonie, seale the Law among my disciples.

And I wil wait vpon the Lord that hideth his face from the house of Iacob, and I will looke for him.

^noteBehold, I, and the children whom the Lord hath giuen me, are for signes, and for wonders in Israel: from the Lord of hostes, which dwelleth in mount Zion.

¶ And when they shall say vnto you; Seeke vnto them that haue familiar spirits, and vnto wizards that peepe and that mutter: should not a people seeke vnto their God? for the liuing, to the dead?

^noteTo the Law and to the Testimonie: if they speake not according to this word, it is because there is ^note no light in them.

And they shall passe through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it shall come to passe, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselues, and curse their King, and their God, and looke vpward.

And they shall looke vnto the earth: and behold trouble and darkenesse, dimnesse of anguish; and they shall be driuen to darkenesse. 688 CHAP. Neuerthelesse the dimnesse shall not be such as was in her vexation; when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun, and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grieuously afflict her by the way of the Sea, beyond Iordan in Galile ^note of the nations.

The ^note people that walked in darknesse, haue seene a great light: they that dwel in the land of the shadow of death, vpon them hath the light shined.

Thou hast multiplied the nation, and ^note not increased the ioy: they ioy before thee, according to the ioy in haruest, Christes kingdome. and as men reioyce when they diuide the spoile.

^noteFor thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staffe of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressour, as in the day of ^note Midian.

^noteFor euery battell of the warriour is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; ^note but this shall be with burning and ^note fewell of fire.

For vnto vs a child is borne, vnto vs a ^note Sonne is giuen, and the gouernment shalbe vpon his shoulder: and his name shalbe called, Wonderfull, Counseller, The mightie God, The euerlasting Father, The Prince of peace.

Of the increase of his gouernment and peace ^note there shall be no end, vpon the throne of Dauid ∧ vpon his kingdome, to order it, and to stablish it with iudgement and with iustice, from henceforth euen for euer: the ^note zeale of the Lord of hostes will performe this.

¶ The Lord sent a word into Iacob, and it hath lighted vpon Israel.

And all the people shal know, euen Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in the pride and stoutnesse of heart;

The brickes are fallen downe, but we will build with hewen stones: the Sycomores are cut downe, but we will change them into Cedars.

11   
Therefore the Lord shall set vp the aduersaries of Rezin against him, and ^note ioyne his enemies together.

12   
The Syrians before, and the Philistines behinde, and they shall deuoure Israel ^note with open mouth: ^note for all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

13   
¶ For the people turneth not vnto him that smiteth them, neither doe they seeke the Lord of hostes.

14   
Therefore the Lord will cut off from Israel head and taile, branch and rush in one day.

15   
The ancient and honourable, hee is the head: and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the taile.

16   
For the ^note leaders of this people cause them to erre, and they ^note that are ledde of them, are ^note destroyed.

17   
Therfore the Lord shall haue no ioy in their yong men, neither shall haue mercy on their fatherlesse ∧ widowes: for euery one is an hypocrite, and an euil doer, and euery mouth speaketh ^note folly: for all this his anger is not turned

¶ For wickednes burneth as the fire: it shall deuoure the briers and thornes, and shall kindle in the thickets of the forrest, and they shall mount vp like the lifting vp of smoke.

Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the ^note fuell of the fire: no man shall spare his brother.

20   
And he shall ^note snatch on the right hand, and be hungry, and he shall eate on the left hand, and they shall not bee satisfied: they shall eate euery man the flesh of his owne arme.

Manasseh, Ephraim: and Ephraim, Manasseh: and they together shalbe against Iudah: for all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. 689 CHAP. Woe vnto them that decree vnrighteous decrees, and ^note that write grieuousnesse which they haue prescribed:

To turne aside the needy from iudgement, and to take away the right from the poore of my people, that widdowes may be their pray, and that they may robbe the fatherles.

And what wil ye doe in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from farre? to whom wil ye flee for helpe? and where will yee leaue your glory?

Without mee they shall bowe downe vnder the prisoners, and they shall fall vnder the slaine: ^note for all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

¶ ^note O ^note Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, ^note and the staffe in their hand is mine indignation.

I will send him against an hypocriticall nation, and against the people of my wrath will I giue him a charge to take the spoile, and to take the praye, and ^note to tread them downe like the mire of the streets.

Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart thinke so, but it is in his heart to destroy, and cut off nations not a few. Asshurs pride.

^noteFor he saith, Are not my princes altogether kings?

Is not Calno, as Carchemish? is not Hamath, as Arpad? is not Samaria, as Damascus?

As my hand hath found the kingdomes of the idoles, and whose grauen images did excell them of Ierusalem and of Samaria:

Shall I not, as I haue done vnto Samaria and her idoles, so doe to Ierusalem and her idoles?

Wherefore it shall come to passe, that when the Lord hath performed his whole worke ^note vpon mount Zion, and on Ierusalem, I will ^note punish the fruit ^note of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high lookes.

For hee saith, By the strength of my hand I haue done it, and by my wisedome, for I am prudent: and I haue remooued the bounds of the people, and haue robbed their treasures, and I haue put downe the inhabitants ^note like a valiant man.

14   
And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathereth egges that are left, haue I gathered all the earth, and there was none that moued the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.

15   
Shall the axe boast it selfe against him that heweth therewith? or shal the sawe magnifie it selfe against him that shaketh it? ^note as if the rod should shake it selfe against them that lift it vp, or as if the staffe should lift vp ^note it selfe, as if it were no wood.

Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leannesse, and vnder his glory hee shall kindle a burning, like the burning of a fire.

17   
And the light of Israel shall bee for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burne and deuoure his thornes and his briers in one day:

18   
And shall consume the glory of his forrest, and of his fruitfull field ^note both soule and body: and they shall bee as when a standerd bearer fainteth.

19   
And the rest of the trees of his forrest shall be ^note few, that a child may write them.

20   
¶ And it shal come to passe in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Iacob, shall no more againe stay vpon him that smote them: but shall stay vpon

A remnant saued. the Lord, the Holy One of Israel in trueth.

The remnant shall returne, euen the remnant of Iacob, vnto the mightie God.

^noteFor though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant ^note of them shall returne: the consumption decreed shall ouerflow ^note with righteousnesse.

^noteFor the Lord God of hostes shall make a consumption, euen determined in the middest of all the land.

¶ Therfore thus saith the Lord God of hostes, O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraide of the Assyrian: he shall smite thee with a rod, ^note and shall lift vp his staffe against thee, after the maner of ^note Egypt.

For yet a very litle while, and the indignation shall cease, and mine anger in their destruction.

26   
And the Lord of hostes shall stirre vp a scourge for him, according to the slaughter of ^note Midian at the rocke Oreb: and as his rod was vpon the Sea, so shall he lift it vp after the manner of Egypt.

And it shall come to passe in that day, that his burden ^note shalbe taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy necke, and the yoke shalbe destroyed because of the anointing.

He is come to Aiath, hee is passed to Migron: at Michmash he hath laid vp his cariages.

They are gone ouer the passage: they haue taken vp their lodging at Geba, Ramah is afraid, Gebeah of Saul is fled.

Behold, the Lord, the Lord of hostes shall lop the bough with terrour: and the high ones of stature shal be hewen downe, and the haughtie shalbe humbled.

And righteousnesse shalbe the girdle of his loines, and faithfulnesse the girdle of his reines.

And the sucking childe shall play on the hole of the aspe, and the weaned childe shall put his hand on the ^note cockatrice denne.

They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountaine: for the earth shall bee full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters couer the sea.

¶ And in that day there shall bee a roote of Iesse, which shall stand for an ensigne of the people; to it shall the ^note Gentiles seeke, and his rest shall bee ^note glorious.

And it shall come to passe in that day, that the Lord shall set his hande againe the second time, to recouer the remnant of his people which shalbe left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, ∧ from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the ylands of the Sea.

And he shall set vp an ensigne for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Iudah, from the foure ^note corners of the earth.

The enuie also of Ephraim shal depart, and the aduersaries of Iudah shalbe cut off: Ephraim shall not enuie Iudah, and Iudah shall not vexe Ephraim.

But they shall fly vpon the shoulders of the Philistines toward the West, they shall spoile ^note them of the East together: ^note they shall lay their hand vpon Edom and Moab, ^note and the children of Ammon shall obey them.

And the Lord shall vtterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea, and with his mighty wind shall hee shake his hand ouer the riuer, and shall smite it in the seuen streames, and make men goe ouer ^note dry-shod.

And there shalbe an high way for the remnant of his people, which shalbe left from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day that hee came vp out of the land of ^note Egypt. 691 CHAP. XII. A ioyfull thanksgiuing of the faithfull for the mercies of God.

And in that day thou shalt say, O Lord, I will praise thee: though thou wast angrie with mee, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me.

Behold, God is my saluation: I will trust, and not be afraid; for the Lord IEHOVAH is my ^note strength and my song, he also is become my saluation.

Therefore with ioy shall yee draw water out of the wels of saluation.

And in that day shall yee say; ^note Praise the Lord, ^note call vpon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted.

Sing vnto the Lord; for hee hath done excellent things: this is knowen in all the earth.

The noise of a multitude in the mountaines, ^note like as of a great people: a tumultuous noise of the kingdomes of nations gathered together: the Lord of hostes mustereth the hoste of the battell.

They come from a farre countrey from the end of heauen, euen the Lord and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land.

¶ Howle yee; for the day of the Lord is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.

Therefore shall all hands ^note bee faint, and euery mans heart shall melt.

And they shalbe afraid: pangs and sorrowes shall take hold of them, they shalbe in paine as a woman that trauelleth: they shalbe ^note amazed ^note one at another, their faces shalbe as ^note flames.

Behold, the day of the Lord commeth, cruell both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate; and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.

For the starres of heauen, and the constellations thereof shall not giue their light: the sunne shalbe ^note darkened in his going forth, and the moone shall not cause her light to shine.

And I will punish the world for their euill, and the wicked for their iniquitie; and I will cause the arrogancie of the proud to cease, and will lay low the hautinesse of the terrible.

I will make a man more pretious then fine gold; euen a man then the golden wedge of Ophir.

Therefore I will shake the heauens, and the earth shall remoue out of her place in the wrath of the Lord of hostes, and in the day of his fierce anger.

And it shalbe as the chased Roe, and as a sheepe that no man taketh vp:

Against Babylon. they shall euery man turne to his owne people, and flee euery one into his owne land.

Euery one that is found shall be thrust through: and euery one that is ioyned vnto them, shall fall by the sword.

Their children also shalbe ^note dashed to pieces before their eyes, their houses shalbe spoiled, ∧ their wiues rauished.

Beholde, I will stirre vp the Medes against them, which shall not regard siluer, and as for gold, they shall not delight in it.

Their bowes also shall dash the yong men to pieces, and they shall haue no pitie on the fruit of the wombe; their eye shall not spare children.

¶ And Babylon the glory of kingdomes, the beautie of the Chaldees excellencie, shall be ^note as when God ouerthrew ^note Sodom and Gomorrah.

It shall neuer be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there, neither shal the shepheards make their fold there.

But ^{note note} wilde beastes of the desert shall lye there, and their houses shalbe full of ^note dolefull creatures, and ^note owles shall dwell there, and Satyres shall daunce there.

For the Lord wil haue mercie on Iacob, and wil yet choose Israel, and set them in their owne land: and the strangers shalbe ioyned with them, and they shal cleaue to the house of Iacob.

And the people shall take them, and bring them to their place: and the house of Israel shall possesse them in the land of the Lord, for seruants and handmaides: and they shall take them captiues, ^note whose captiues they were, and they shall rule ouer their oppressours.

And it shall come to passe in the The tyrants fall. day that the Lord shal giue thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy feare, and from the hard bondage wherein thou wast made to serue,

The Lord hath broken the staffe of the wicked, and the scepter of the rulers.

He who smote the people in wrath with ^note a continuall stroke; hee that ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted and none hindereth.

The whole earth is at rest and is quiet: they breake foorth into singing.

Yea the firre trees reioyce at thee, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Since thou art layd downe, no feller is come vp against vs.

^noteHell from beneath is mooued for thee to meet thee at thy comming: it stirreth vp the dead for thee, euen all the ^note chiefe ones of the earth; it hath raised vp from their thrones, all the kings of the nations.

All they shall speake and say vnto thee; Art thou also become weake as we? art thou become like vnto vs?

Thy pompe is brought downe to the graue, and the noyse of thy violes: the worme is spread vnder thee, and the wormes couer thee.

How art thou fallen from heauen, ^note O Lucifer, sonne of the morning? how art thou cut downe to the ground, which didst weaken the nations?

13   
For thou hast said in thine heart; I wil ascend into heauen, I wil exalt my throne aboue the starres of God: I wil sit also vpon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the North.

I wil ascend aboue the heights of the cloudes, I wil bee like the most High.

15   
Yet thou shalt be brought downe to hel, to the sides of the pit.

16   
They that see thee shal narrowly looke vpon thee, and consider thee, saying; Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdomes?

17   
That made the world as a wildernesse, and destroyed the cities thereof ^note that opened not the house of his prisoners?

18   
All the kings of the nations, euen all of them lie in glory, euery one in his owne house.

Against Assyria, and Moab.

But thou art cast out of thy graue, like an abominable branch: and as the raiment of those that are slaine, thrust through with a sword, that goe downe to the stones of the pit, as a carkeis troden vnder feete.

Thou shalt not be ioyned with them in buriall, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slaine thy people: ^note the seede of euill doers shall neuer be renowmed.

21   
Prepare slaughter for his children ^note for the iniquitie of their fathers, that they doe not rise nor possesse the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities.

22   
For I will rise vp against them, sayth the Lord of hostes, and cut off from Babylon the name, and remnant, and sonne and nephew, sayth the Lord.

I will also make it a possession for the Bitterne, and pooles of water: and I will sweepe it with the besome of destruction, sayth the Lord of hostes.

¶ The Lord of hostes hath sworne, saying; Surely as I haue thought, so shall it come to passe; and as I haue purposed, so shall it stand:

That I will breake the Assyrian in my land, and vpon my mountaines tread him vnder foote: then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders.

26   
This is the purpose, that is purposed vpon the whole earth: and this is the hand that is stretched out vpon all the nations.

27   
For the Lord of hostes hath ^note purposed, and who shall disanull it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turne it backe?

28   
In the yeere that king Ahaz died, was this burden.

29   
¶ Reioyce not thou whole Palestina, because the rod of him that smote thee is broken: for out of the serpents roote shall come foorth a ^note cockatrice, and his fruite shall be a fierie flying serpent.

And the first borne of the poore shall feed, and the needy shall lie downe in safetie: and I will kill thy root with famine, and he shall slay thy remnant.

Howle, O gate, crie, O citie, thou whole Palestina art dissolued, for there shal come from the North a smoke, and ^note none shall bee alone in his ^note appointed times. Against Assyria, and Moab.

What shall one then answere the messengers of the nation? ^note that the Lord hath founded Zion, and the poore of his people shall ^note trust in it. 694 CHAP. XV. The lamentable state of Moab.

The burden of Moab: because in the night Ar of Moab is laide waste and ^note brought to silence; because in the night Kir of Moab is laide waste, and brought to silence:

Hee is gone vp to Baijth, and to Dibon, the high places, to weepe: Moab shall howle ouer Nebo, and ouer Medeba, ^note on all their heads shalbe baldnesse, and euery beard cut off.

In their streetes they shall girde themselues with sackecloth: on the toppes of their houses, and in their streetes euery one shall howle, ^note weeping abundantly.

And Heshbon shall cry, and Elealeh: their voice shalbe heard euen vnto Iahaz: therefore the armed souldiers of Moab shall crie out, his life shall be grieuous vnto him.

My heart shall cry out for Moab; ^note his fugitiues shall flee vnto Zoar, an ^note heifer of three yeeres olde: for by the mounting vp of Luhith with weeping shall they goe it vp: for in the way of Horonaim, they shall raise vp a crie of ^note destruction.

For the waters of Nimrim shall be ^note desolate: for the hay is withered away, the grasse faileth, there is no greene thing.

7   
Therefore the abundance they haue gotten, and that which they haue laide vp, shall they cary away to the ^note brooke of the willowes.

For the cry is gone round about the borders of Moab: the howling thereof vnto Eglaim, and the howling thereof vnto Beer-Elim.

9   
For the waters of Dimon shalbe full of blood: for I will bring ^note more vpon Dimon, lyons vpon him that escapeth of Moab, and vpon the remnant of the land. 695 CHAP. Send ye the lambe to the ruler of the land from ^note Sela to the wildernesse, vnto the mount of the daughter of Zion.

For it shalbe that as a wandering bird ^note cast out of the nest: so the daughters of Moab shalbe at the fordes of Arnon.

^noteTake counsell, execute Iudgement, make thy shadow as the night in the middest of the nooneday, hide the outcastes, bewray not him that wandereth.

Let mine outcasts dwel with thee, Moab, be thou a couert to them from the face of the spoiler: for the ^note extortioner is at an end, the spoiler ceaseth, ^note the oppressours are consumed out of the land.

And in mercy shall the throne be ^note established, and hee shal ^note sit vpon it in trueth, in the tabernacle of Dauid, iudging and seeking iudgement, and hasting righteousnesse.

¶ We haue heard of the ^note pride of Moab (hee is very proud) euen of his hautines, and his pride, and his wrath: but his lies shall not be so.

Therefore shall Moab ^note howle for Moab, euery one shal howle: for the foundations of Kir-hareseth shall yee ^note mourne, surely they are stricken.

For the fieldes of Heshbon languish, and the vine of Sibmah, the lords of the heathen haue broken downe the principall plants thereof, they are come euen vnto Iazer, they wandred through the wildernesse, her branches are ^note stretched out, they are gone ouer the sea.

¶ Therefore I wil bewaile with the weeping of Iazer, the Uine of Sibmah I wil water thee with my teares, O Heshbon, and Elealeh: for ^note the shouting for thy Summer fruits, and for thy haruest, is fallen.

And ^note gladnesse is taken away, and ioy out of the plentifull field, and in the Uineyards there shalbe no singing, neither shal there be shouting: the treaders shall tread out no wine in their presses; I haue made their vintage shouting to cease.

But now the Lord hath spoken, saying, Within three yeeres, as the yeeres of an hireling, and the glory of Moab shalbe contemned, with all that great multitude; and the remnant shall be very small and ^note feeble. 696 CHAP. The burden of Damascus: Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a citie, and it shalbe a ruinous heape.

The cities of Aroer are forsaken: they shall bee for flockes, which shall lye downe, and none shall make them afraid.

The fortresse also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdome from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall bee as the glorie of the children of Israel, saith the Lord of hostes.

And in that day it shall come to passe, that the glory of Iacob shall bee made thinne, and the fatnesse of his flesh shall waxe leane.

And it shall be as when the haruest-man gathereth the corne, and reapeth the eares with his arme; and it shalbe as he that gathereth eares in the valley of Rephaim.

(¶ Yet gleaning-grapes shall be left in it, as the shaking of an Oliue tree, two or three berries in the toppe of the vppermost bough: foure or fiue in the out-most fruitfull branches thereof, saith the Lord God of Israel.

At that day shall a man looke to his Maker, and his eyes shall haue respect to the Holy one of Israel.

And hee shall not looke to the altars, the worke of his handes, neither shall respect that which his fingers haue made, either the groues or the ^note images.)

¶ In that day shall his strong

Against Ethiopia, and Egypt. cities be as a forsaken bough, and an vppermost branch, which they left, because of the children of Israel: and there shalbe desolation.

Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy saluation, and hast not beene mindfull of the rocke of thy strength: therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plants, and shalt set it with strange slips.

In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seede to flourish: but the haruest shall be a ^note heape in the day of griefe, and of desperate sorrow.

¶ Woe to the ^note multitude of many people, which make a noise, like the noise of the seas; and to the rushing of nations, that make a rushing, like the rushing of ^note mighty waters.

The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but God shall rebuke them, and they shall flee farre off, and shalbe chased as the chaffe of the mountaines before the wind, and like a ^note rolling thing before the whirlewind.

That sendeth ambassadours by the sea, euen in vessels of bulrushes vpon the waters, saying; Goe yee swift messengers to a nation ^note scattered and peeled, to a people terrible from their beginning hitherto, ^note a nation meted out and troden downe; ^note whose land the riuers haue spoiled.

All yee inhabitants of the world, and dwellers on the earth, see yee, when hee lifteth vp an ensigne on the mountaines; and when he bloweth a trumpet, heare yee.

For so the Lord sayd vnto me: I will take my rest, and I will ^note consider in my dwelling place like a cleare heate ^note vpon herbes, and like a cloud of dew in the heate of haruest. Against Ethiopia, and Egypt.

For afore the haruest when the bud is perfect, and the sowre grape is ripening in the flowre; hee shall both cut off the sprigges with pruning hookes, and take away and cut downe the branches.

They shalbe left together vnto the foules of the mountaines, and to the beasts of the earth: and the foules shall summer vpon them, and all the beastes of the earth shall winter vpon them.

¶ In that time shall the present be brought vnto the Lord of hostes, of a people ^note scattered and peeled, and from a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and troden vnder foote, whose land the riuers haue spoiled, to the place of the name of the Lord of hostes, the mount Zion. 698 CHAP. The burden of Egypt: Behold, the Lord rideth vpon a swift cloude, and shall come into Egypt, and the idoles of Egypt shalbe moued at his presence, and the heart of Egypt shall melt in the midst of it.

And I will ^note set the Egyptians against the Egyptians: and they shall fight euery one against his brother, and euery one against his neighbour; citie against citie, and kingdome against kingdome.

And the spirit of Egypt ^note shall faile in the midst thereof, and I will ^note destroy the counsell thereof: and they shall seeke to the idoles, and to the charmers, and to them that haue familiar spirits, and to the wizards.

And the Egyptians will I ^note giue ouer into the hand of a cruell Lord; and a fierce king shall rule ouer them, saith the Lorde, the Lord of hostes.

And the waters shall faile from the sea, and the riuer shalbe wasted, and dried vp.

And they shall turne the riuers farre away, and the brookes of defence shall be emptied and dried vp: the reeds and flagges shall wither.

Earthly helpes.

The paper reeds by the brookes, by the mouth of the brookes, and euery thing sowen by the brooks shal wither, be driuen away, ^note and be no more.

The fishers also shall mourne, and all they that cast angle into the brookes shall lament, and they that spread nets vpon the waters shall languish.

Moreouer they that worke in fine flaxe, and they that weaue ^note net-works shall be confounded.

And they shall be broken in the ^note purposes thereof, all that make sluces and ponds ^note for fish.

¶ Surely the princes of Zoan are fooles, the counsell of the wise counsellers of Pharaoh is become brutish: How say ye vnto Pharaoh, I am the sonne of the wise, the sonne of ancient kings?

Where are they? Where are thy wise men? and let them tell thee now, and let them know, what the Lord of hosts hath purposed vpon Egypt.

The princes of Zoan are become fooles, the princes of Noph are deceiued, they haue also seduced Egypt, euen ^note they that are the stay of the tribes thereof.

The Lord hath mingled ^note a peruerse spirit in the midst thereof: and they haue caused Egypt to erre in euery worke thereof, as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit.

Neither shall there be any worke for Egypt, which the head or taile, branch or rush may doe.

In that day shall Egypt bee like vnto women: and it shall be afraid and feare, because of the shaking of the hand of the Lord of hosts, which he shaketh ouer it.

And the land of Iudah shall bee a terrour vnto Egypt, euery one that maketh mention thereof, shal be afraid in himselfe, because of the counsell of the Lord of hosts, which he hath determined against it.

¶ In that day shall fiue cities in the land of Egypt speake the ^note language of Canaan, and sweare to the Lord of hostes: one shalbe called the citie ^note of destruction.

In that day shall there be an Altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at the border thereof to the Lord.

And it shall be for a signe, and for Isaiah naked. a witnesse vnto the Lord of hosts in the land of Egypt: for they shall crie vnto the Lord, because of the oppressours, and he shal send them a Sauiour and a great One, and he shall deliuer them.

And the Lord shalbe knowen to Egypt, and the Egyptians shal know the Lord in that day, and shal do sacrifice and oblation, yea they shall vow a vowe vnto the Lord, and performe it.

And the Lord shall smite Egypt, he shall smite and heale it, and they shall returne euen to the Lord, and he shalbe intreated of them, and shall heale them.

¶ In that day shall there be a hie way out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians shall serue with the Assyrians.

In that day shall Israel bee the third with Egypt, and with Assyria, euen a blessing in the midst of the land:

Whom the Lord of hosts shal blesse, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance. 699 CHAP. XX. A type prefiguring the shamefull captiuitie of Egypt and Ethiopia.

In the yeere that Tartan came vnto Ashdod (when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him) and fought against Ashdod and tooke it:

At the same time spake the Lord ^note by Isaiah the sonne of Amoz, saying, Go and loose the sackcloth from off thy loynes, and put off thy shooe from thy foot: and he did so, walking naked and bare foot.

And the Lord said, Like as my seruant Isaiah hath walked naked and bare foote three yeeres for a signe and wonder vpon Egypt and vpon Ethiopia:

So shall the king of Assyria lead away the ^note Egyptians prisoners, and the Ethiopians captiues, yong and old, naked and bare foote, euen with their buttocks vncouered, to the ^note shame of Egypt.

And they shall be afraid and ashamed of Ethiopia their expectation, and of Egypt their glory.

For they fled from the swords, ^note from the drawen sword, and from the bent bow, and from the grieuousnesse of warre.

Ye haue seene also the breaches of the citie of Dauid, that they are many: and ye gathered together the waters of the lower poole.

And it was reuealed in mine eares by the Lord of hostes; surely this iniquitie shall not be purged from you, till yee die, sayth the Lord God of hostes.

¶ Thus sayth the Lord God of hostes, Goe, get thee vnto this treasurer, euen vnto Shebna, which is ouer the house, and say;

What hast thou here? and whom hast thou here, that thou hast hewed thee out a sepulchre here, ^note as hee that heweth him out a sepulchre on high, and that graueth an habitation for himselfe in a rocke?

Behold; ^note the Lord will cary thee away with a ^note mightie captiuitie, and will surely couer thee.

He will surely violently turne and tosse thee, like a ball into a ^note large countrey: there shalt thou die, and there the charets of thy glory shall be the shame of thy Lords house.

And I will driue thee from thy station, and from thy state shall he pull thee downe.

¶ And it shall come to passe in that day, that I will call my seruant The key of Dauid. Eliakim the sonne of Hilkiah:

And I will clothe him with thy robe, and strengthen him with thy girdle, and I wil commit thy gouernment into his hand, and he shalbe a father to the inhabitants of Ierusalem, and to the house of Iudah.

And the key of the house of Dauid will I lay vpon his shoulder: so he shall ^note open and none shall shut, and he shall shut and none shall open.

And I will fasten him as a naile in asure place, and he shalbe for a glorious throne to his fathers house.

And they shall hang vpon him all the glory of his fathers house, the offspring and the issue, all vessels of small quantitie: from the vessels of cups, euen to all the ^note vessels of flagons.

He stretched out his hand ouer the sea, hee shooke the kingdomes: the Lord hath giuen a commandement ^note against the merchant citie, to destroy the ^note strong holdes thereof.

And he said, Thou shalt no more reioice, O thou oppressed virgin, daughter of Zidon: arise, passe ouer to Chittim, there also shalt thou haue no rest.

Behold, the land of the Caldeans, this people was not till the Assyrian founded it for them that dwel in the wildernesse: they set vp the towers thereof, they raised vp the palaces thereof, and he brought it to ruine.

Howle ye ships of Tarshish: for your strength is laid waste.

And it shall come to passe in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seuentie yeeres according to the dayes of one king: after the end of seuentie yeeres ^note shall Tyre sing as an harlot.

Take an harpe, goe about the city thou harlot, that hast beene forgotten, make sweet melody, sing many songs, that thou mayest be remembred.

¶ And it shall come to passe after the ende of seuentie yeeres, that the Lord will visite Tyre, and shee shall turne to her hire, and shall commit fornication with all the kingdomes of the world vpon the face of the earth.

And her merchandize and her hire shall be holinesse to the Lord: it shall not be treasured nor laid vp: for her merchandize shalbe for them that dwell before the Lord, to eate sufficiently, and for ^note durable clothing. 703 CHAP. Behold, the Lord maketh the earth emptie, and maketh it waste, and ^note turneth it vpside downe, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof. Curse for sinnes.

And it shall be as with the people, so with the ^{note note} priest, as with the seruant, so with his master, as with the maid, so with her mistresse, as with the buyer, so with the seller, as with the lender, so with the borower, as with the taker of vsurie, so with the giuer of vsurie to him.

The land shall be vtterly emptied, and vtterly spoiled: for the Lord hath spoken this word.

The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the ^note haughtie people of the earth doe languish.

The earth also is defiled vnder the inhabitants thereof: because they haue transgressed the lawes, changed the ordinance, broken the euerlasting couenant.

Therefore hath the curse deuoured the earth, and they that dwell therin are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.

The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merrie hearted doe sigh.

The mirth ^note of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that reioyce, endeth, the ioy of the harpe ceaseth.

They shall not drinke wine with a song, strong drinke shall bee bitter to them that drinke it.

The city of confusion is broken downe: euery house is shut vp, that no man may come in.

There is a crying for wine in the streets, all ioy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone.

In the citie is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction.

¶ When thus it shalbe in the midst of the land among the people: there shall be as the shaking of an oliue tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done.

They shal lift vp their voice, they shal sing, for the maiesty of the Lord, they shall crie aloud from the sea.

Wherefore, glorifie ye the Lord in the ^note fires, euen the Name of the Lord God of Israel in the yles of the Sea.

¶ From the ^note vttermost part of the earth haue we heard songs, euen glory to the righteous: but I said, ^note My leannesse, my leannesse, woe vnto me: the treacherous dealers haue dealt treacherously,

Feare, pit, and snare. yea the treacherous dealers haue dealt very treacherously.

Feare, and the pit, ∧ the snare are vpon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.

And it shall come to passe, that he who fleeth from the noise of the feare, shall fall into the ^note pit; and he that commeth vp out of the midst of the pit, shalbe taken in the snare: for the windowes from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth doe shake.

The earth is vtterly broken downe, the earth is cleane dissolued, the earth is moued exceedingly.

The earth shall reele to and fro, like a drunkard, and shall be remooued like a cottage, and the transgression thereof shall be heauie vpon it, and it shall fall, and not rise againe.

And it shall come to passe in that day, that the Lord shall ^note punish the hoste of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth vpon the earth.

And they shalbe gathered together ^note as prisoners are gathered in the ^note pit, and shall be shut vp in the prison, and after many dayes shall they bee ^note visited.

Then the ^note Moone shall be confounded, and the Sunne ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall reigne in mount Zion and in Ierusalem, and ^note before his ancients gloriously. 704 CHAP. XXV. 1 The Prophet praiseth God, for his iudgements, 6 for his sauing benefits, 9 and for his victorious saluation.

O Lord, thou art my God, I will exalt thee, I will praise thy Name; for thou hast done wonderfull things; thy counsels of old are faithfulnesse and trueth.

For thou hast made of a citie, an heape; of a defenced city, a ruine: a palace of strangers, to be no citie, it shall neuer be built.

Therefore shall the strong people glorifie thee, the city of the terrible nations shall feare thee.

For thou hast bene a strength to the poore, a strength to the needy in his distresse, a refuge from the storme, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storme against the wall. Death swallowed.

Thou shalt bring downe the noise of strangers, as the heat in a dry place; euen the heat with the shadow of a cloud: the branch of the terrible ones shalbe brought low.

¶ And in this mountaine shall the Lord of hostes make vnto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined.

And he wil ^note destroy in this mountaine the face of the couering ^note cast ouer all people, and the vaile that is spread ouer all nations.

He will ^note swallow vp death in victorie, and the Lord God wil ^note wipe away teares from off al faces, and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the Lord hath spoken it.

¶ And it shalbe said in that day, Loe, this is our God, we haue waited for him, and he will saue vs: this is the Lord, we haue waited for him, we wil be glad, and reioyce in his saluation.

For in this mountaine shall the hand of the Lord rest, and Moab shalbe ^note troden downe vnder him, euen as straw is ^note troden downe for the dounghill.

And hee shall spread foorth his hands in the midst of them, as hee that swimmeth spreadeth foorth his hands to swimme: and hee shall bring downe their pride together with the spoiles of their hands.

And the fortresse of the high fort of thy walles shall hee bring downe, lay low, and bring to the ground, euen to the dust. 705 CHAP. XXVI. 1 A song inciting to confidence in God, 5 for his iudgements, 12 and for his fauour to his people. 20 An exhortation to wait on God.

In that day shall this song bee sung in the land of Iudah; Wee haue a strong citie, saluation will God appoint for walles and bulwarkes.

Thou wilt keepe him in ^note perfect peace, whose ^note minde is stayed on thee; because he trusteth in thee.

Trust ye in the Lord for euer: for in the Lord Iehouah is ^note euerlasting strength.

¶ For hee bringeth downe them that dwell on high, the loftie citie he layeth it low; he layeth it low, euen to the ground, he bringeth it euen to the dust.

The foote shall treade it downe, euen the feete of the poore, and the steps of the needie.

The way of the iust is vprightnesse: thou most vpright, doest weigh the path of the iust.

Yea in the way of thy Iudgements, O Lord, haue we waited for thee; the desire of our soule is to thy Name, and to the remembrance of thee.

With my soule haue I desired thee in the night, yea with my spirit within me will I seeke thee early: for when thy iudgements are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learne righteousnesse.

Let fauour be shewed to the wicked, yet will hee not learne righteousnesse: in the land of vprightnesse will he deale vniustly, and will not behold the maiestie of the Lord.

Lord, when thy hand is lifted vp, they will not see: but they shall see, and be ashamed for their enuie ^note at the people, yea the fire of thine enemies shall deuoure them.

O Lord our God, other lordes besides thee haue had dominion ouer vs: but by thee only will we make mention of thy Name.

They are dead, they shall not liue; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.

In measure ^note when it shooteth foorth, thou wilt debate with it: ^note hee stayeth his rough winde in the day of the East winde.

Iacob purged.

By this therefore shall the iniquitie of Iacob be purged, and this is all the fruit, to take away his sinne: when he maketh all the stones of the Altar as chalke stones, that are beaten in sunder, the groues and ^note images shall not stand vp.

Yet the defenced citie shall be desolate, and the habitation forsaken, and left like a wildernesse: there shall the calfe feede, and there shall he lie downe, and consume the branches thereof.

When the boughes thereof are withered, they shall be broken off: the women come and set them on fire: for it is a people of no vnderstanding: therefore hee that made them will not haue mercie on them, and hee that formed them, will shewe them no fauour.

¶ And it shall come to passe in that day, that the Lord shall beate off from the chanell of the riuer vnto the streame of Egypt, and ye shall bee gathered one by one, O ye children of Israel.

And it shall come to passe in that day, that the great trumpet shall bee blowen, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the Lord in the holy mount at Ierusalem. 707 CHAP. Woe to the crowne of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flowre, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are ^note ouercome with wine.

Behold, the Lord hath a mightie and strong one, which as a tempest of haile and a destroying storme, as a flood of mightie waters ouerflowing, shall cast downe to the earth with the hand.

¶ In that day shall the Lord of hosts be for a crowne of glory, and for a diademe of beautie vnto the residue of his people:

And for a spirit of iudgement to him that sitteth in iudgement, and for strength to them that turne the battell to the gate.

¶ But they also haue erred through wine, and through strong drinke are out of the way: the priest and the prophet haue erred through strong drinke, they are swallowed vp of wine: they are out of the way through strong drinke, they erre in vision, they stumble in iudgement.

For all tables are full of vomite and filthinesse, so that there is no place cleane.

¶ Whome shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to vnderstand ^note doctrine? them that are weaned from the milke, and drawen from the breasts.

For precept ^note must be vpon precept, precept vpon precept, line vpon line, line vpon line, here a litle, and there a litle.

For with ^{note note} stammering lips and another tongue ^note will he speake to this people.

To whom he said, This is the rest wherwith ye may cause the weary to rest, and this is the refreshing, yet they would not heare.

But the word of the Lord was vnto them, precept vpon precept, precept vpon precept, line vpon line, line vpon line, here a litle and there a litle: that they might goe and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

¶ Wherefore heare the worde of the Lord, yee scornefull men, that rule this people which is in Ierusalem.

Because ye haue said, Wee haue made a couenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement, when the ouerflowing scourge shall passe thorow, it shall not come vnto vs: for wee haue made lies our refuge, and vnder falsehood haue we hid our selues:

¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Beholde, I lay in Zion for a

The corner stone. foundation, ^note a stone, a tryed stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: hee that beleeueth, shall not make haste.

Iudgement also will I lay to the line, and righteousnesse to the plummet: and the haile shall sweepe away the refuge of lyes, and the waters shall ouerflow the hiding place.

¶ And your couenant with death shalbe disanulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the ouerflowing scourge shall passe thorough, then yee shalbe ^note troden downe by it.

From the time that it goeth forth, it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it passe ouer, by day and by night, and it shalbe a vexation, onely ^note to vnderstand the report.

For the bed is shorter, then that a man can stretch himselfe on it: and the couering narrower, then that he can wrap himselfe in it.

For the Lord shall rise vp as in mount ^note Perazim, he shalbe wroth as in the valley of ^note Gibeon, that he may doe his worke, his strange worke; and bring to passe his act, his strange act.

Now therefore be yee not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I haue heard from the Lord God of hostes a consumption euen determined vpon the whole earth.

¶ Giue yee eare, and heare my voyce, hearken and heare my speach.

Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and breake the clods of his ground?

When hee hath made plaine the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the ^note principall wheate, and the appointed barly and the ^note rye in their ^note place?

For the fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheele turned about vpon the cummin: but the fitches are beaten out with a staffe, and the cummin with a rodde.

Yet I will distresse Ariel, and there shalbe heauinesse and sorrow; and it shall be vnto mee as Ariel.

And I will campe against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with a mount, and I will raise forts against thee.

And thou shalt bee brought downe, and shalt speake out of the ground, and thy speach shall be low out of the dust, and thy voyce shalbe as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speach shall ^note whisper out of the dust.

Moreouer the multitude of thy strangers shalbe like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones shalbe as chaffe, that passeth away; yea it shalbe at an instant suddenly.

Thou shalt bee visited of the Lord of hostes with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storme and tempest, and the flame of deuouring fire.

¶ And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, euen all that fight against her and her munition, and that distresse her, shalbe as a dreame of a night vision.

It shall euen be as when a hungry man dreameth, and behold he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soule is emptie: or as when a thirstie man dreameth, and behold he drinketh; but hee awaketh, and behold he is faint, and his soule hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations bee, that fight against mount Zion.

¶ Stay your selues and wonder, ^note cry yee out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine, they stagger, but not with strong drinke.

For the Lord hath powred out vpon you the spirit of deepe sleepe, and hath closed your eyes: the Prophets

Hypocrites, and rebellious children. and your ^note rulers, the Seers hath hee couered.

And the vsion of all is become vnto you, as the wordes of a ^note booke that is sealed, which men deliuer to one that is learned, saying, Reade this, I pray thee: and hee saith, I cannot, for it is sealed.

And the booke is deliuered to him that is not learned, saying, Reade this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.

¶ Wherefore the Lord said, ^note Forasmuch as this people draw neere mee with their mouth, and with their lips doe honour me, but haue remoued their heart farre from me, and their feare towards mee is taught by the precept of men:

Therefore behold, ^note I will proceed to do a marueilous worke amongst this people, euen a marueilous worke and a wonder: ^note for the wisedome of their wise men shall perish, and the vnderstanding of their prudent men shall be hid.

Woe vnto them that seeke deepe to hide their counsell from the Lord, and their workes are in the darke, and they say, ^note Who seeth vs? and who knoweth vs?

Surely your turning of things vpside downe shall be esteemed as the potters clay: for shall the ^note worke say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed, say of him that framed it, He had no vnderstanding?

Is it not yet a very litle while, and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitfull field shall be esteemed as a forrest?

¶ And in that day shall the deafe heare the words of the booke, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscuritie, and out of darkenesse.

The meeke also ^note shall increase their ioy in the Lord, and the poore among men shall reioice in the holy One of Israel.

For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquitie are cut off:

That make a man an offendour for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproueth in the gate, and turne aside the iust for a thing of nought.

Therefore thus saith the Lord who redeemed Abraham, concerning Hypocrites, and rebellious children. the house of Iacob: Iacob shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now waxe pale.

But when hee seeth his children the worke of mine hands in the midst of him, they shall sanctifie my Name, and sanctifie the Holy One of Iacob, and shall feare the God of Israel.

They also that erred in spirit ^note shall come to vnderstanding, and they that murmured, shall learne doctrine. 709 CHAP. Woe to the rebellious children, sayth the Lord, that take counsell, but not of mee; and that couer with a couering, but not of my Spirit, that they may adde sinne to sinne:

That walke to goe downe into Egypt, (and haue not asked at my mouth) to strengthen themselues in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt.

Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt, your confusion.

For his princes were at Zoan, and his ambassadors came to Hanes.

They were all ashamed of a people that could not profit them, nor be an helpe nor profite, but a shame and also a reproch.

The burden of the beastes of the South: into the lande of trouble and anguish, from whence come the yong and old lyon, the viper, and fierie flying serpent, they will carie their riches vpon the shoulders of yong asses, and their treasures vpon the bunches of camels, to a people that shall not profite them.

For the Egyptians shall helpe in vaine, and to no purpose: Therefore haue I cried ^note concerning this: Their strength is to sit still.

¶ Now goe, write it before them in a table, and note it in a booke, that it may bee for ^note the time to come for euer and euer:

That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not heare the Law of the Lord:

Prophesie not.

Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophecie not vnto vs right things: speake vnto vs smooth things, prophecie deceits.

Get ye out of the way: turne aside out of the path: cause the Holy one of Israel to cease from before vs.

Wherefore, thus saith the Holy one of Israel: Because ye despise this word, and trust in ^note oppression and peruersnesse, and stay thereon:

Therefore this iniquitie shalbe to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking commeth suddenly at an instant.

And he shall breake it as the breaking of the potters ^note vessell, that is broken in pieces, he shall not spare; so that there shall not be found in the bursting of it, a sheard to take fire from the hearth, or to take water withall out of the pit.

For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy one of Israel, In returning and rest shall ye be saued, in quietnesse and in confidence shalbe your strength, and ye would not:

But ye said; No, for we will flee vpon horses; therefore shall ye flee. And we will ride vpon the swift; therefore shall they that pursue you, be swift.

One thousand shall flee at the rebuke of one: at the rebuke of fiue, shall ye flee, till ye be left as a ^note beacon vpon the top of a mountaine, and as an ensigne on a hill.

And though the Lord giue you the bread of aduersitie, and the water of ^note affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be remooued into a corner any more: but thine eyes shall see thy teachers.

And thine eares shall heare a word behinde thee, saying; This is the way, walke ye in it, when ye turne to the right hand, and when ye turne to the left.

Ye shall defile also the couering of ^note thy grauen images of siluer, and the Deuouring fire. ornament of thy moulten images of gold: thou shalt ^note cast them away as a menstruous cloth, thou shalt say vnto it; Get thee hence.

Then shall he giue the raine of thy seed that thou shalt sow the ground withall; and bread of the increase of the earth, and it shalbe fat and plenteous: in that day shall thy cattell feed in large pastures.

The oxen likewise and the yong asses that eare the ground, shall eate ^note cleane prouender which hath bene winnowed with the shouell and with the fanne.

And there shall be vpon euery high mountaine, and vpon euery ^note high hill, riuers and streames of waters, in the day of the great slaughter when the towers fall.

Moreouer the light of the Moone shalbe as the light of the Sunne, and the light of the Sunne shall be seuenfold, as the light of seuen dayes, in the day that the Lord bindeth vp the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.

¶ Beholde, the Name of the Lord commeth from farre, burning with his anger, ^note and the burden thereof is ^note heauy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a deuouring fire.

And his breath as an ouerflowing streame, shall reach to the midst of the necke, to sift the nations with the sieue of vanitie: and there shalbe a bridle in the iawes of the people causing them to erre.

Yee shall haue a song as in the night, when a holy solemnitie is kept, and gladnesse of heart, as when one goeth with a pipe to come into the mountaine of the Lord, to the ^note mighty one of Israel.

And the Lord shall cause ^note his glorious voice to be heard, and shall shew the lighting downe of his arme, with the indignation of his anger, and with the flame of a deuouring fire, with scattering and tempest and hailestones.

For through the voyce of the Lord shall the Assyrian be beaten downe, which smote with a rod.

Woe to them that go down to Egypt for helpe, and stay on horses, and trust in charets, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong: but they looke not vnto the Holy one of Israel, neither seeke the Lord.

Yet he also is wise, and will bring euill, and wil not ^note call backe his words: but will arise against the house of the euill doers, and against the helpe of them that worke iniquitie.

Now the Egyptians are men and not God, and their horses flesh and not spirit: when the Lord shall stretch out his hand, both he that helpeth shall fall, and hee that is holpen shall fall downe, and they all shall faile together.

For thus hath the Lord spoken vnto me; Like as the lyon and the yong lyon roaring on his pray, when a multitude of shepheards is called foorth against him, he will not be afraid of their voice, nor abase himselfe for the ^note noyse of them: so shall the Lord of hostes come downe to fight for mount Zion, and for the hill thereof.

As birds flying, so wil the Lord of hostes defend Ierusalem, defending also hee will deliuer it, and passing ouer, he will preserue it.

¶ Turne yee vnto him from whom the children of Israel haue deeply reuolted.

For in that day euery man shall ^note cast away his idoles of siluer, and ^note his idoles of gold, which your owne hands haue made vnto you for a sinne.

¶ Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, not of a mightie man; and the sword, not of a meane man, shal deuoure him: but hee shall flee ^note from the sword, and his young men shall be ^note discomfited. Good rulers.

And hee shall passe ouer to ^note his strong holde for feare, and his princes shall be afraid of the ensigne, sayth the Lord, whose fire is in Zion, and his fornace in Ierusalem. 711 CHAP. Behold, a King shal reigne in righteousnes, and princes shal rule in iudgement.

And a man shall be as an hiding place from the winde, and a couert from the tempest: as riuers of water in a drie place, as the shadow of a ^note great rocke in a wearie land.

And the eyes of them that see, shall not be dimme; and the eares of them that heare, shall hearken.

The instruments also of the churle are euill: he deuiseth wicked deuices, to destroy the poore with lying wordes, euen ^note when the needie speaketh right.

But the liberall deuiseth liberall things, and by liberall things shall hee ^note stand.

¶ Rise vp ye women that are at ease: heare my voice, ye carelesse daughters, giue eare vnto my speech.

Many ^note dayes and yeeres shall ye be troubled, yee carelesse women: for the vintage shall faile, the gathering shall not come.

Tremble yee women that are at ease: be troubled, ye carelesse ones, strip ye and make ye bare, and gird sackecloth vpon your loynes.

They shall lament for the teats, for ^note the pleasant fieldes, for the fruitfull vine.

Upon the land of my people shall

The spoiler spoiled. come vp thornes, and briars, ^note yea vpon all the houses of ioy in the ioyous citie.

Because the palaces shall be forsaken, the multitude of the citie shall be left, the ^note forts and towres shall be for dennes for euer, a ioy of wild asses, a pasture of flockes;

Untill the spirit be powred vpon vs from on high, and the wildernesse be a fruitfull field, and the fruitfull field be counted for a forrest.

Then ^note iudgement shall dwell in the wildernesse, and righteousnesse remaine in the fruitfull field.

And the worke of righteousnesse shalbe peace, and the effect of righteousnesse, quietnesse and assurance for euer.

And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places:

When it shall haile, comming downe on the forrest; ^note and the citie shall be low in a low place.

The Lord is exalted: for hee dwelleth on high, he hath filled Zion with iudgement and righteousnesse.

And wisedome and knowledge shall be the stabilitie of thy times, and strength of ^note saluation: the feare of the Lord is his treasure.

Behold, their ^note valiant ones shall Hypocrites feare. cry without: the ambassadours of peace shall weepe bitterly.

The high wayes lye waste; the way faring man ceaseth: he hath broken the couenant, he hath despised the cities, he regardeth no man.

The earth mourneth and languisheth: Lebanon is ashamed and ^note hewen downe: Sharon is like a wildernes, and Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits.

Now will I rise, saith the Lord: now will I be exalted, now will I lift vp my selfe.

Yee shall conceiue chaffe, yee shall bring forth stubble: your breath as fire shall deuoure you.

And the people shalbe as the burnings of lyme: as thornes cut vp shall they be burnt in the fire.

¶ Heare yee that are farre off, what I haue done; and yee that are neere, acknowledge my might.

The sinners in Zion are afraid, fearefulnesse hath surprised the hypocrites: who among vs shall dwell with the deuouring fire? who amongst vs shall dwell with euerlasting burnings?

He that ^note walketh ^note righteously, and speaketh ^note vprightly, hee that despiseth the gaine of ^note oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his eares from hearing of ^note blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing euill:

He shall dwell on ^note high: his place of defence shalbe the munitions of rocks, bread shalbe giuen him, his waters shall be sure.

Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty: they shall behold ^note the land that is very farre off.

Thine heart shall meditate terrour; Where is the ^note scribe? where is the ^note receiuer? where is he that counted the towres?

Thou shalt not see a fierce people, a people of a deeper speech then thou canst perceiue; of a ^note stammering tongue, that thou canst not vnderstand.

Looke vpon Zion, the city of our solemnities: thine eyes shall see Ierusalem a quiet habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken downe, not one of the stakes thereof shall euer be remoued, neither shall any of the coardes thereof be broken.

But there the glorious Lord will be vnto vs a place of ^note broad riuers

Against Idumea. and streames; wherein shall goe no galley with oares, neither shall gallant ship passe thereby.

For the Lord is our Iudge, the Lord is our ^note Lawgiuer, the Lord is our King, he wil saue vs.

^noteThy tacklings are loosed: they could not well strengthen their mast, they could not spread the saile: then is the praye of a great spoile diuided, the lame take the praye.

Come neere ye nations to heare, and hearken ye people: let the earth heare, and ^note all that is therein, the world, and all things that come forth of it.

For the indignation of the Lord is vpon all nations, and his furie vpon all their armies: hee hath vtterly destroyed them, he hath deliuered them to the slaughter.

Their slaine also shalbe cast out, and their stinke shall come vp out of their carkeises, and the mountaines shalbe melted with their blood.

And all the hoste of heauen shalbe dissolued, and the heauens shalbe ^note rouled together as a scrole: and all their hoste shall fall downe as the leafe falleth off from the Uine, and as a ^note falling figge from the figge tree.

For my sword shall bee bathed in heauen: beholde, it shall come downe vpon Idumea, and vpon the people of my curse to iudgement.

The sword of the Lord is filled with blood, it is made fat with fatnesse, and with the blood of lambes and goates, with the fat of the kidneys of rammes: for the Lord hath a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Idumea.

And the ^note Unicornes shall come downe with them, and the bullockes with the bulles, and their land shall be ^note soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatnesse.

For it is the day of the Lords ^note vengeance, and the yeere of recompences Gods word sure. for the controuersie of Zion.

And the streames thereof shalbe turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into brimstone, and the land thereof shall become burning pitch.

It shal not be quenched night nor day, ^note the smoke thereof shall goe vp for euer: from generation to generation it shall lye waste, none shal passe through it for euer and euer.

¶ ^note The ^note cormorant and the bitterne shall possesse it, the owle also and the rauen shall dwell in it, and he shall stretch out vpon it the line of confusion, and the stones of emptinesse.

They shall call the nobles thereof to the kingdome, but none shall bee there, and all her Princes shall bee nothing.

And thornes shall come vp in her palaces, nettles and brambles in the fortresses thereof: and it shalbe an habitation of dragons, and a court for ^note owles.

The wilde ^note beasts of the desert shall also meete with the ^note wilde beasts of the Iland and the satyre shall cry to his felow, the ^note shrichowle also shall rest there, ∧ finde for her selfe a place of rest.

There shall the great owle make her nest, and lay and hatch, and gather vnder her shadow: there shall the vultures also be gathered, euery one with her mate.

¶ Seeke ye out of the booke of the Lord, and reade: no one of these shall faile, none shall want her mate: for my mouth, it hath commaunded, and his spirit, it hath gathered them.

And he hath cast the lot for them, and his hand hath diuided it vnto them by line: they shall possesse it for euer, from generation to generation shall they dwell therein. 714 CHAP. The wildernesse and the solitarie place shall be glad for them: and the desert shall reioyce and blossome as the rose.

It shall blossome abundantly, and reioyce euen with ioy and singing: the glory of Lebanon shal be giuen vnto it, the excellencie of Carmel and Sharon: they shall see the glory of the

Iudah inuaded. Lord, and the excellencie of our God.

¶ ^note Strengthen yee the weake hands, and confirme the feeble knees.

Say to them that are of ^note a fearefull heart; Be strong, feare not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, euen God with a recompence, he will come and saue you.

Then the ^note eyes of the blind shall be opened, and ^note the eares of the deafe shalbe vnstopped.

Then shall the ^note lame man leape as an Hart, and the ^note tongue of the dumbe sing: for in the wildernesse shall ^note waters breake out, and streames in the desert.

And the parched ground shall become a poole, and the thirstie land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shalbe ^note grasse with reeds and rushes.

And an high way shalbe there, and away, and it shall be called the way of holinesse, the vncleane shall not passe ouer it, ^note but it shall be for those: the wayfaringmen, though fooles, shall not erre therein.

No lyon shalbe there; nor any rauenous beast shall goe vp thereon, it shall not be found there: but the redeemed shall walke there.

And the ^note ransomed of the Lord shall returne and come to Zion with songs, and euerlasting ioy vpon their heads: they shall obtaine ioy and gladnesse, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. 715 CHAP. XXXVI. 1 Sennacherib inuadeth Iudah. 4 Rabshakeh sent by Sennacherib, by blasphemous perswasions solliciteth the people to reuolt. 22 His words are told to Hezekiah.

Nowe ^note it came to passe in the fourteenth yeere of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came vp against all the defenced cities of Iudah, and tooke them.

And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh, from Lachish to Ierusalem, vnto king Hezekiah, with a great armie: and he stood by the conduit of the vpper poole in the high way of the fullers field.

Then came forth vnto him Eliakim Hilkiahs sonne, which was Rabshakeh. ouer the house, and Shebna the ^note scribe, and Ioah Asaphs sonne the Recorder.

¶ And Rabshakeh sayd vnto them; Say yee now to Hezekiah; Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria; What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?

5   
I say, (sayest thou) (but they are but ^note vaine words) ^note I haue counsell and strength for warre: Now on whom doest thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?

6   
Loe, thou trustest in the ^note staffe of this broken reede, on Egypt; whereon if a man leane, it will goe into his hand and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.

But if thou say to me; We trust in the Lord our God: Is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and sayd to Iudah and to Ierusalem; Yee shall worship before this altar?

8   
Now therefore giue ^note pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will giue thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders vpon them.

9   
How then wilt thou turne away the face of one captaine of the least of my masters seruants: and put thy trust on Egypt for charets and for horsemen?

10   
And am I now come vp without the Lord against this land to destroy it? the Lord sayd vnto me; Goe vp against this land and destroy it.

11   
¶ Then sayd Eliakim and Shebna ∧ Ioah vnto Rabshakeh; Speake, I pray thee, vnto thy seruants in the Syrian language; for we vnderstand it: and speake not to vs in the Iewes language, in the eares of the people that are on the wall.

¶ But Rabshakeh sayd; Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee, to speake these words? Hath he not sent me to the men that sit vpon the wall, that they may eate their owne dongue, and drinke their owne pisse with you?

Then Rabshakeh stood, and cryed with a loud voice in the Iewes language, and sayd; Heare ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.

14   
Thus saith the king; Let not Hezekiah deceiue you, for he shall not be able to deliuer you.

15   
Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying; The Lord will surely deliuer vs: this citie

The blasphemie of Rabshakeh. shall not be deliuered into the hand of the King of Assyria.

Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus sayth the King of Assyria, ^note Make an agreement with mee by a present, and come out to mee: and eate yee euery one of his vine, and euery one of his figgetree, and drinke yee euery one the waters of his owne cisterne:

Until I come and take you away to a land like your owne land, a land of corne and wine, a land of bread and vineyards:

18   
Beware lest Hezekiah perswade you, saying; The Lord will deliuer vs. Hath any of the gods of the nations deliuered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

19   
Where are the gods of Hamath, and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharuaim? and haue they deliuered Samaria out of my hand?

20   
Who are they amongst all the gods of these landes, that haue deliuered their land out of my hand, that the Lord should deliuer Ierusalem out of my hand?

21   
But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the Kings commandement was, saying; Answere him not.

¶ Then came Eliakim the sonne of Hilkiah, that was ouer the houshold, and Shebna the Scribe, and Ioah the sonne of Asaph the Recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and tolde him the wordes of Rabshakeh. 716 CHAP. XXXVII. 1 Hezekiah mourning, sendeth to Isaiah to pray for them. 6 Isaiah comforteth them. 8 Sennacherib going to encounter Tirhakah, sendeth a blasphemous letter to Hezekiah. 14 Hezekiahs prayer. 21 Isaiah his prophecie of the pride, and destruction of Sennacherib, and the good of Zion. 36 An Angel slayeth the Assyrians. 37 Sennacherib is slaine at Nineueh by his owne sonnes.

And ^note it came to passe when King Hezekiah heard it, that hee rent his clothes, and couered himselfe with sackecloth, and went into the house of the Lord.

And hee sent Eliakim, who was ouer the houshold, and Shebna the Scribe, and the Elders of the Priestes couered with sackecloth, vnto Isaiah The blasphemie of Rabshakeh. the Prophet the sonne of Amoz.

And they sayd vnto him; Thus sayth Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of ^note blasphemie: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring foorth.

It may be the Lord thy God will heare the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproch the liuing God, and will reprooue the words which the Lord thy God hath heard: wherefore lift vp thy prayer for the remnant that is ^note left.

So the seruants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

¶ And Isaiah sayd vnto them; Thus shall yee say vnto your master, Thus sayth the Lord, Be not afraid of the wordes that thou hast heard, wherewith the seruants of the king of Assyria haue blasphemed me.

Behold, I will ^note send a blast vpon him, and hee shall heare a rumour, and returne to his owne land, and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his owne land.

¶ So Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for hee had heard that he was departed from Lachish.

9   
And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, Hee is come foorth to make warre with thee: and when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying;

Thus shall ye speake to Hezekiah King of Iudah, saying, Let not thy God in whom thou trustest deceiue thee, saying, Ierusalem shall not bee giuen into the hand of the king of Assyria.

11   
Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria haue done to all lands by destroying them vtterly, and shalt thou be deliuered?

12   
Haue the gods of the nations deliuered them which my fathers haue destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar?

13   
Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the citie of Sepharuaim, Hena and Iuah?

14   
¶ And Hezekiah receiued the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it, and Hezekiah went vp vnto the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord.

Hezekiahs prayer.

And Hezekiah prayed vnto the Lord, saying,

O Lord of hostes, God of Israel, that dwellest betweene the Cherubims, thou art the God, euen thou alone, of all the kingdomes of the earth, thou hast made heauen and earth.

17   
Encline thine eare, O Lord, and heare, Open thine eyes, O Lord, and see, and heare all the wordes of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproch the liuing God.

18   
Of a trueth, Lord, the kings of Assyria haue laid waste all the ^note nations and their countreys,

19   
And haue ^note cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of mens hands, wood and stone: therfore they haue destroyed them.

20   
Now therefore, O Lord our God, saue vs from his hand, that all the kingdomes of the earth may knowe, that thou art the Lord, euen thou onely.

21   
¶ Then Isaiah the sonne of Amoz sent vnto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Wheras thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria:

This is the worde which the Lord hath spoken concerning him: The virgin, the daughter of Zion hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorne, the daughter of Ierusalem hath shaken her head at thee.

23   
Whom hast thou reproched and blasphemed? and against whome hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted vp thine eyes on high? euen against the Holy One of Israel.

^noteBy thy seruants hast thou reproched the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my charets am I come vp to the height of the mountaines, to the sides of Lebanon, and I wil cut downe ^note the tall cedars thereof, and the choise firre trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, and the ^note forrest of his Carmel.

I haue digged and drunke water, and with the sole of my feete haue I dried vp all the riuers of the ^note besieged places.

^noteHast thou not heard long agoe, how I haue done it, and of ancient times, that I haue formed it? now haue I brought it to passe, that thou shouldest be to lay waste defenced cities into ruinous heapes. Sennacherib slaine.

Therefore their inhabitants were ^note of small power, they were dismayed and confounded: they were as the grasse of the field, and as the greene herbe, as the grasse on the house tops, and as corne blasted before it be growen vp.

But I know thy ^note abode, and thy going out, and thy comming in, and thy rage against me.

29   
Because thy rage against me, and thy tumult is come vp into mine eares: therefore will I put my hooke in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turne thee backe by the way by which thou camest.

30   
And this shall be a signe vnto thee, Ye shall eate this yeere such as groweth of it felfe: and the second yeere that which springeth of the same: and in the third yeere sow ye and reape, and plant vineyards, and eate the fruit thereof.

And the ^note remnant that is escaped of the house of Iudah, shal againe take roote downeward, and beare fruite vpward.

32   
For out of Ierusalem shall goe forth a remnant, and ^note they that escape out of mount Zion: the ^note zeale of the Lord of hostes shall doe this.

33   
Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this citie, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor cast a banke against it.

34   
By the way that he came, by the same shall he returne, and shall not come into this citie, saith the Lord.

35   
For I will ^note defend this citie to saue it, for mine owne sake, and for my seruant Dauids sake.

36   
Then the ^note Angel of the Lord went forth, and smote in the campe of the Assyrians a hundred and fourescore and fiue thousand: and when they arose earely in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.

¶ So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went, and returned, and dwelt at Nineueh.

And it came to passe as hee was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adramelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword, and they escaped into the land of ^note Armenia: and Esarhaddon his sonne reigned in his stead. 717 CHAP. XXXVIII. 1 Hezekiah hauing receiued a message of

Hezekiah sicke, death, by prayer hath his life lengthened. 8 The Sunne goeth tenne degrees backward, for a signe of that promise. 9 His song of Thankesgiuing.

^noteIn those daies was Hezekiah sicke vnto death: and Isaiah the Prophet the sonne of Amoz came vnto him, and said vnto him; Thus saith the Lord, ^note Set thine house in order: for thou shalt die, and not liue.

Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and prayed vnto the Lord,

And said, Remember now, O Lord, I beseech thee, how I haue walked before thee in trueth, and with a perfect heart, and haue done that which is good in thy sight: and Hezekiah wept ^note sore.

¶ Then came the word of the Lord to Isaiah, saying,

Goe and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith the Lord, the God of Dauid thy father; I haue heard thy prayer, I haue seene thy teares: behold, I will adde vnto thy dayes fifteene yeeres.

And I will deliuer thee and this citie, out of the hand of the king of Assyria: and I will defend this citie.

7   
And this shall be a signe vnto thee from the Lord, that the Lord will doe this thing that he hath spoken.

8   
Behold, I will bring againe the shadow of the degrees which is gone downe in the ^note Sunne-diall of Ahaz ten degrees backward: so the Sunne returned ten degrees, by which degrees it was gone downe.

¶ The writing of Hezekiah king of Iudah, when he had bene sicke, and was recouered of his sicknesse:

I saide in the cutting off of my dayes; I shall goe to the gates of the graue: I am depriued of the residue of my yeeres.

11   
I said, I shal not see the Lord, euen the Lord in the land of the liuing: I shal behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world.

12   
Mine age is departed, and is remoued from me as a shepheards tent: I haue cut off like a weauer my life: he will cut mee off ^note with pining sicknesse: from day euen to night wilt thou make an end of me.

13   
I reckoned till morning, that as a Lyon so will hee breake all my bones: His thankesgiuing. from day euen to night wilt thou make an end of me.

14   
Like a crane or a swallow, so did I chatter; I did mourne as a doue: mine eyes faile with looking vpward: O Lord, I am oppressed, ^note vndertake for me.

15   
What shall I say? hee hath both spoken vnto mee, and himselfe hath done it: I shall goe softly, all my yeeres in the bitternesse of my soule.

O Lord, by these things men liue: and in all these things is the life of my spirit, so wilt thou recouer me, and make me to liue.

Behold, ^note for peace I had great bitternesse, but ^note thou hast in loue to my soule deliuered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sinnes behinde thy backe.

For the graue cannot praise thee, death cannot celebrate thee: they that goe downe into the pit cannot hope for thy trueth.

The liuing, the liuing, hee shall praise thee, as I doe this day: the father to the children shall make knowen thy trueth.

The Lord was ready to saue me: therefore we will sing my songs to the stringed instruments, all the dayes of our life, in the house of the Lord.

For Isaiah had said, Let them take a lumpe of figges, and lay it for a plaister vpon the boile, and he shall recouer.

Hezekiah also had said, what is the signe, that I shall goe vp to the house of the Lord? 718 CHAP. XXXIX. 1 Merodach Baladan sending to visit Hezekiah because of the wonder, hath notice of his treasures. 3 Isaiah vnderstanding thereof, foretelleth the Babylonian captiuitie.

^noteAt that time Merodach Baladan the sonne of Baladan king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah: for hee had heard that he had bene sicke, and was recouered.

And Hezekiah was glad of them, and shewed them the house of his ^note precious things, the siluer, and the golde, and the spices, and the precious oyntment, and all the house of his ^note armour, and all that was found in his treasures:

Of Iohn Baptist. there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah shewed them not.

¶ Then came Isaiah the Prophet vnto King Hezekiah, and sayde vnto him, What sayd these men? and from whence came they vnto thee? And Hezekiah said, They are come from a farre countrey vnto me, euen from Babylon.

Then said hee, What haue they seene in thine house? And Hezekiah answered, All that is in mine house haue they seene: there is nothing among my treasures, that I haue not shewed them.

Then sayde Isaiah to Hezekiah, Heare the word of the Lord of hostes.

Behold, the dayes come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers haue laide vp in store, vntill this day, shalbe caried to Babylon: nothing shalbe left, saith the Lord.

And of thy sonnes that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall bee Eunuches in the palace of the king of Babylon.

Then sayde Hezekiah to Isaiah, Good is the word of the Lord which thou hast spoken: hee sayd moreouer, For there shalbe peace and trueth in my dayes. 719 CHAP. Speake ye ^note comfortably to Ierusalem, and cry vnto her, that her ^note warrefare is accomplished, that her iniquitie is pardoned: for shee hath receiued of the Lords hand double for all her sinnes.

The voyce sayd; Cry. And hee sayd; What shall I cry? ^noteAll flesh is grasse, and all the goodlinesse thereof is as the flowre of the field.

The grasse withereth, the flowre fadeth; because the spirit of the Lord bloweth vpon it: surely the people is grasse.

The grasse withereth, the flowre fadeth: but the ^note word of our God shall stand for euer.

¶ ^note O Zion, that bringest good tydings, get thee vp into the high mountaine: ^note O Ierusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift vp thy voyce with strength, lift it vp, be not afraid: say vnto the cities of Iudah; Behold your God.

Behold, the Lord God will come ^note with strong hand, and his arme shall rule for him: behold, ^note his reward is with him, and ^note his worke before him.

He shall ^note feede his flocke like a shepheard: he shall gather the lambes with his arme; and carie them in his bosome, and shall gently lead those ^note that are with yoong.

¶ Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand? and meted out heauen with the spanne, and comprehended the dust of the earth in ^note a measure, and weighed the mountaines in scales, and the hilles in a balance?

^noteWho hath directed the spirit of the Lord, or, being ^note his counseller, hath taught him?

With whom tooke he counsell, and who ^note instructed him, and taught him in the path of iudgement? and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of ^note vnderstanding?

Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, hee taketh vp the yles as a very litle thing.

And Lebanon is not sufficient to burne, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt offring.

All nations before him are as ^note nothing, and they are counted to him lesse then nothing, and vanitie.

¶ To whom then will ye ^note liken God? or what likenesse will ye compare vnto him?

The workeman melteth a grauen

Gods power, and prouidence for his. image, and the goldsmith spreadeth it ouer with golde, and casteth siluer chaines.

He that ^note is so impouerished that he hath no oblation, chooseth a tree that will not rot; he seeketh vnto him a cunning workeman, to prepare a grauen image that shall not be mooued.

Haue yee not knowen? haue yee not heard? hath it not beene tolde you from the beginning? haue yee not vnderstood from the foundations of the earth?

^noteIt is he that sitteth vpon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grashoppers; that ^note stretcheth out the heauens as a curtaine, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwel in:

Yea they shal not be planted, yea they shall not be sowen, yea their stocke shall not take roote in the earth: and he shall also blow vpon them, ∧ they shall wither, and the whirlewinde shall take them away as stubble.

To whom then will ye liken me, or shal I be equall, saith the Holy One?

Lift vp your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names, by the greatnesse of his might, for that hee is strong in power, not one faileth.

27   
Why sayest thou, O Iacob, and speakest O Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my iudgement is passed ouer from my God?

28   
¶ Hast thou not knowen? hast thou not heard, that the euerlasting God, the Lord, the Creatour of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is wearie? ^note there is no searching of his vnderstanding.

He giueth power to the faint, and to them that haue no might, he increaseth strength.

30   
Euen the youths shall faint, and be weary, and the yong men shall vtterly fall.

31   
But they that waite vpon the Lord, shall ^note renew their strength: they shall mount vp with wings as Eagles, they shal runne and not be weary, and they shall walke, and not faint. 720 CHAP. XLI. 1 God expostulateth with his people, about his mercies to the Church, 10 about his promises, 21 and about the vanity of Idoles. Gods power, and prouidence for his.

Keepe silence before me, O ylands, and let the people renew their strength: let them come neere, then let them speake: let vs come neere together to iudgement.

Who raised vp ^note the righteous man from the East, called him to his foote, gaue the nations before him, and made him rule ouer kings? hee gaue them as the dust to his sword, and as driuen stuble to his bow.

He pursued them, and passed ^note safely; euen by the way, that hee had not gone with his feete.

Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the Lord the ^note first, and with the last, I am he.

The yles saw it and feared, the ends of the earth were afraid, drew neere, and came.

They helped euery one his neighbour, and euery one sayd to his brother, ^note Be of good courage.

So the carpenter encouraged the ^note goldsmith, and he that smootheth with the hammer ^note him that smote the anuill, ^note saying; It is ready for the sodering: and he fastened it with nayles that it should not be moued.

But thou Israel, art my seruant, Iacob whom I haue ^note chosen, the seede of Abraham my ^note friend.

Thou whom I haue taken from the ends of the earth, and called thee from the chiefe men thereof, and sayd vnto thee; Thou art my seruant, I haue chosen thee, and not cast thee away.

¶ Feare thou not, for I am with thee: be not dismaied, for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee, yea I will helpe thee, yea I will vphold thee with the right hand of my righteousnesse.

Behold, all they that were incensed against thee, shalbe ^note ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing, and ^note they that striue with thee, shall perish.

Thou shalt seeke them, and shalt not find them, euen ^note them that contended with thee: ^note they that warre against thee shalbe as nothing, and as a thing of nought.

For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying vnto thee,

What idoles are. Feare not, I will helpe thee.

Feare not, thou worme Iacob, and ye ^note men of Israel: I will helpe thee, saith the Lord, and thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.

Behold, I will make thee a new sharpe threshing instrument hauing ^note teeth: thou shalt thresh the mountaines, and beate them small, and shalt make the hilles as chaffe.

Thou shalt fanne them, and the winde shall carie them away, and the whirlewinde shall scatter them: and thou shalt reioyce in the Lord, and shalt glory in the Holy One of Israel.

When the poore and needie seeke water and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will heare them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them.

I will open ^note riuers in hie places, and fountaines in the midst of the valleys: I will make the ^note wildernesse a poole of water, and the dry land springs of water.

I will plant in the wildernes the Cedar, the Shittah tree, and the Myrtle, and the Oyle tree: I will set in the desert the Firre tree, and the Pine and the Boxe tree together:

That they may see, and knowe, and consider, and vnderstand together, that the hand of the Lord hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.

^noteProduce your cause, saith the Lord, bring foorth your strong reasons, saith the King of Iacob.

Let them bring them foorth, and shew vs what shall happen: let them shew the former things what they bee, that we may ^note consider them, and know the latter end of them, or declare vs things for to come.

Shewe the things that are to come hereafter, that wee may knowe that ye are gods: yea doe good or doe euill, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together.

Behold, ye are ^note of nothing, and your worke ^note of nought: an abomination is he that chooseth you.

I haue raised vp one from the North, and he shall come: from the rising of the Sunne shall he call vpon my name, and he shall come vpon princes as vpon morter, and as the potter treadeth clay.

Who hath declared from the beginning, Christs Office. that we may know? and before time, that we may say, He is righteous? yea there is none that sheweth, yea there is none that declareth, yea there is none that heareth your words.

For I behelde, and there was no man, euen amongst them, and there was no counseller, that when I asked of them, could ^note answere a word.

Behold, the former things are come to passe, and new things doe I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.

Sing vnto the Lord a newe song, and his praise from the end of the earth: yee that goe downe to the sea, and ^note all that is therein; the yles, and the inhabitants thereof.

Let the wildernes and the cities thereof lift vp their voyce, the villages that Kedar doeth inhabite: let the inhabitants of the rocke sing, let them shoute from the top of the mountaines.

Let them giue glory vnto the Lord, and declare his praise in the Ilands.

The Lord shall goe foorth as a mighty man, he shall stirre vp iealousie like a man of warre: he shall cry, yea roare; hee shall ^note preuaile against his enemies.

I haue long time holden my peace, I haue bene still and refrained my selfe: now wil I cry like a trauailing woman, I will destroy and ^note deuoure at once.

I will make waste mountaines and hilles, and dry vp all their herbes, and I will make the riuers Ilands, and I will dry vp the pooles.

And I will bring the blinde by a way that they knew not, I will lead them in pathes that they haue not knowen: I wil make darkenesse light before them, and crooked things ^note straight. These things will I doe vnto them, and not forsake them.

¶ They shall be ^note turned backe, they shalbe greatly ashamed, that trust in grauen images, that say to the moulten images; Ye are our gods.

Heare ye deafe, and looke ye blinde that ye may see.

Who is blinde, but my seruant? or deafe, as my messenger that I sent? who is blinde as he that is perfit, and blinde as the Lords seruant?

Seeing many things, ^note but thou obseruest not: opening the eares, but he heareth not.

The Lord is well pleased for his righteousnes sake, he will magnifie the Law, and make ^note it honourable.

But this is a people robbed and spoiled, ^note they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison houses: they are for a praye, ∧ none deliuereth; ^note for a spoile, and none saith, Restore. Gods loue to his.

Who among you will giue eare to this? who will hearken, and heare ^note for the time to come?

Who gaue Iacob for a spoile, and Israel to the robbers? Did not the Lord, hee, against whom wee haue sinned? For they would not walke in his wayes, neither were they obedient vnto his Law.

Therefore he hath powred vpon him the furie of his anger, and the strength of battell: and it hath set him on fire round about, yet hee knew not; and it burned him, yet hee layed it not to heart. 722 CHAP. When thou passest through the waters, I wil be with thee; and through the riuers, they shal not ouerflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burnt; neither shall the flame kindle vpon thee.

For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy one of Israel, thy Sauiour: I gaue Egypt for thy ransome, Ethiopia and Seba for thee.

Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast bene honourable, and I haue loued thee: therefore will I giue men for thee, and people for thy ^note life.

^noteFeare not, for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the East, and gather thee from the West.

I wil say to the North, Giue vp; and to the South, Keepe not backe: bring my sonnes from farre, and my daughters from the ends of the earth;

Euen euery one that is called by my Name: for I haue created him for my glory, I haue formed him, yea I haue made him.

¶ Bring foorth the blinde people, that haue eyes; and the deafe that haue eares.

Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled: ^note who among them can declare this, and shew vs former things? let them bring foorth their witnesses, that they may be iustified: or let them heare, and say, It is trueth.

Yee are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my seruant whom I haue chosen: that ye may know and beleeue me, and vnderstand that I am he: ^note before me there was ^note no God formed, neither shall there be after me.

I, euen I ^note am the Lord, and beside me there is no Sauiour.

I haue declared, and haue saued, and I haue shewed, when there was no strange God among you: therefore yee are my witnesses, saith the Lord, that I am God.

Yea before the day was, I am hee; and there is none that can deliuer out of my hand: I will worke, and who shall ^{note note} let it?

¶ Thus sayth the Lord your Redeemer, the Holy one of Israel; For your sake I haue sent to Babylon, and haue brought downe all their ^note nobles, and the Caldeans, whose crie is in the shippes.

Which bringeth foorth the charet and horse, the armie and the power: they shall lie downe together, they shall not rise: they are extinct, they are quenched as towe.

¶ Remember yee not the former things, neither consider the things of olde.

Behold, I will doe a ^note new thing: now it shall spring foorth, shall yee not know it? I will euen make a way in the wildernesse, and riuers in the desert.

The beast of the field shall honor mee, the dragons and the ^note owles, because I giue waters in the wildernesse, and riuers in the desert, to giue drinke to my people, my chosen.

^noteThis people haue I formed for my selfe, they shall shewe foorth my praise.

¶ But thou hast not called vpon me, O Iacob, but thou hast beene wearie of me, O Israel. Gods loue to his chosen people.

Thou hast not brought mee the ^note small cattell of thy burnt offrings, neither hast thou honoured mee with thy sacrifices. I haue not caused thee to serue with an offring, nor wearied thee with incense.

Thou hast bought mee no sweete cane with money, neither hast thou ^note filled mee with the fat of thy sacrifices: but thou hast made mee to serue with thy sins, thou hast wearied mee with thine iniquities.

I, euen I am hee that ^note blotteth out thy transgressions for mine owne sake, and will not remember thy sinnes.

Put mee in remembrance: let vs plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest bee iustified.

Thy first father hath sinned, and thy ^note teachers haue transgressed against mee.

Therefore I haue profaned the ^note princes of the Sanctuarie, and haue giuen Iacob to the curse, and Israel to reproches. 723 CHAP. Thus sayeth the Lord that made thee, and formed thee from the wombe, which wil helpe thee: Feare not, O Iacob, my seruant, and thou Iesurun, whom I haue chosen.

For I will ^note powre water vpon him that is thirstie, and floods vpon the dry ground: I will powre my spirit vpon thy seede, and my blessing vpon thine offspring:

And they shall spring vp as among the grasse, as willowes by the water courses.

One shall say, I am the Lords: and another shall call himselfe by the name of Iacob: and another shall subscribe with his hand vnto the Lord, and surname himselfe by the name of Israel.

Thus saith the Lord the king of Israel and his redeemer the Lord of hostes, ^note I am the first, and I am the last, and besides me there is no God.

Vanitie of Idoles, and Idolaters.

And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the things that are comming, and shall come? let them shew vnto them.

Feare yee not, neither be afraid: haue not I told thee from that time, and haue declared it? yee are euen my witnesses. Is there a God besides me? yea ^note there is no ^note God, I know not any.

¶ They that make a grauen image are all of them vanitie, and their ^note delectable things shall not profit, and they are their owne witnesses, ^note they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.

10   
Who hath formed a God, or moulten a grauen image that is profitable for nothing?

11   
Behold, all his fellowes shall be ^note ashamed: and the workemen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand vp; yet they shal feare, and they shalbe ashamed together.

^noteThe smith ^note with the tonges both worketh in the coales, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his armes: yea he is hungrie, and his strength faileth; hee drinketh no water, and is faint.

The carpenter stretcheth out his rule: he maketh it out with the line: he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compasse, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beautie of a man; that it may remaine in the house.

He heweth him downe cedars, and taketh the Cypresse and the Oke, which he ^note strengthneth for himselfe among the trees of the forrest: he planteth an Ashe, and the raine doth nourish it.

Then shall it bee for a man to burne: for hee will take thereof and warme himselfe; yea he kindleth it and baketh bread; yea he maketh a God, and worshippeth it: he maketh it a grauen image, and falleth downe thereto.

He burneth part thereof in the fire: with part thereof he eateth flesh: he rosteth rost, and is satisfied: yea hee warmeth himselfe, and saith; Aha, I am warme, I haue seene the fire.

And the residue thereof he maketh a God, euen his grauen image: hee falleth downe vnto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth vnto it, and saith; Vanitie of Idoles, and Idolaters. Deliuer me, for thou art my God.

They haue not knowen, nor vnderstood: for he hath ^note shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot vnderstand.

And none ^note considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor vnderstanding to say; I haue burnt part of it in the fire, yea also I haue baked bread vpon the coales thereof: I haue rosted flesh and eaten it; and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall downe to ^note the stocke of a tree?

He feedeth of ashes: a deceiued heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliuer his soule, nor say; Is there not a lie in my right hand?

¶ Remember these (O Iacob and Israel) for thou art my seruant: I haue formed thee: thou art my seruant, O Israel; thou shalt not be forgotten of me.

I haue blotted out, as a thicke cloude, thy transgressions, and as a a cloud, thy sinnes: returne vnto me, for I haue redeemed thee.

Sing, O yee heauens; for the Lord hath done it: shout yee lower parts of the earth: breake forth into singing yee mountaines, O forrest and euery tree therein: for the Lord hath redeemed Iacob, and glorified himselfe in Israel.

Thus saith the Lord thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the wombe; I am the Lord that maketh all things, that stretcheth forth the heauens alone, that spreadeth abroad the earth by my selfe:

That frustrateth the tokens of the lyers, and maketh diuiners mad, that turneth wisemen backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish:

That confirmeth the word of his seruant, and performeth the counsell of his messengers, that saith to Ierusalem, Thou shalt be inhabited; and to the cities of Iudah, Yee shall be built, and I will raise vp the ^note decayed places thereof.

That saith to the deepe; Be dry, and I will drie vp thy riuers.

That saith of Cyrus, Hee is my shepheard, and shall performe all my pleasure, euen saying to Ierusalem, ^note Thou shalt be built, and to the Temple, Thy foundation shalbe laid.

Cyrus called. 724 CHAP. XLV. 1 God calleth Cyrus for his Churches sake. 5 By his omnipotencie he challengeth obedience. 20 Hee conuinceth the idoles of vanitie, by his sauing power.

Thus saith the Lord to his Anointed, to Cyrus whose right hande I ^note haue holden, to subdue nations before him: and I will loose the loines of kings to open before him the two leaued gates, and the gates shall not be shut.

I will goe before thee, and make the crooked places straight, I wil break in pieces the gates of brasse, and cut in sunder the barres of yron.

And I will giue thee the treasures of darkenesse, ∧ hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know, that I the Lord which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.

For Iacob my seruants sake, and Israel mine elect, I haue euen called thee by thy name: I haue surnamed thee, though thou hast not knowen me.

¶ I ^note am the Lord, and there is none els, there is no God besides me: I girded thee, though thou hast not knowen me:

That they may knowe from the rising of the Sun, and from the West, that there is none besides me, I am the Lord, and there is none else.

I forme the light, and create darkenesse: I make peace, and create euill: I the Lord do all these things.

8   
Drop downe, ye heauens, from aboue, and let the skies powre downe righteousnesse: let the earth open, and let them bring forth saluation, and let righteousnesse spring vp together: I the Lord haue created it.

Woe vnto him that striueth with his maker: Let the potsheard striue with the potsheards of the earth: ^note shal the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy worke, he hath no hands?

Woe vnto him that saith vnto his father, What begettest thou? or to the woman, What hast thou brought forth?

Thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and his maker, Aske me of things to come concerning my sonnes, and concerning the worke of my hands command ye me.

I haue made the earth, and created man vpon it: I, euen my handes God onely Lord. haue stretched out the heauens, and all their hoste haue I commanded.

I haue raised him vp in righteousnesse, and I will ^note direct all his wayes: he shall ^note build my citie, and hee shall let goe my captiues, not for price nor reward, saith the Lord of hosts.

Thus saith the Lord, The labour of Egypt, and merchandise of Ethiopia, and of the Sabeans, men of stature shall come ouer vnto thee, and they shall be thine, they shall come after thee, in chaines they shall come ouer: and they shal fall downe vnto thee, they shal make supplication vnto thee, saying, Surely God is in thee, and there is none else, there is no god.

Uerely thou art a God that hidest thy selfe, O God of Israel the Sauiour.

They shall be ashamed, and also confounded all of them: they shall goe to confusion together that are ^note makers of idoles.

But Israel shall bee saued in the Lord with an euerlasting saluation: ye shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end.

For thus saith the Lord that created the heauens, God himselfe that formed the earth and made it, hee hath established it, he created it not in vaine, he formed it to be inhabited, I am the Lord, and there is none else.

I haue not spoken in ^note secret, in a darke place of the earth: I said not vnto the seed of Iacob, Seeke ye mee in vaine: I the Lord speake righteousnesse, I declare things that are right.

¶ Assemble your selues and come: draw neere together ye that are escaped of the nations: they haue no knowledge that set vp the wood of their grauen image, and pray vnto a god that cannot saue.

Tell ye and bring them neere, yea let them take counsell together, who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? Haue not I the Lord? and there is no God else beside me, a iust God and a Sauiour, there is none beside me.

22   
Looke vnto mee, and be ye saued all the endes of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.

23   
I haue sworne by my selfe: the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousnes, and shall not returne, that vnto

God beareth his. me euery ^note knee shall bowe, euery tongue shall sweare.

^noteSurely, shall one say, In the Lord haue I righteousnesse and strength: euen to him shall men come, and all that are incensed against him, shalbe ashamed.

In the Lord shall all the seed of Israel be iustified, and shall glory. 725 CHAP. XLVI. 1 The idoles of Babylon could not saue themselues. 3 God saueth his people to the end. Idoles are not comparable to God for power, 12 or present saluation.

Bel boweth downe, Nebo stoupeth, their idoles were vpon the beasts, and vpon the cattell: your carriages were heauie loaden, they are a burden to the wearie beast.

They stoupe, they bow downe together, they could not deliuer the burden, but ^note themselues are gone into captiuitie.

¶ Hearken vnto me, O house of Iacob, and al the remnant of the house of Israel, which are borne by me, from the belly, which are caried from the wombe.

And euen to your old age I am he, and euen to hoare haires will I cary you: I haue made, and I will beare, euen I wil cary and wil deliuer you.

¶ To whom wil ye liken me, and make me equall, and ^note compare me, that we may be like?

They lauish gold out of the bagge, and weigh siluer in the balance, and hire a goldsmith, and hee maketh it a god: they fall downe, yea they worship.

They beare him vpon the shoulder, they cary him and set him in his place, and hee standeth; from his place shall he not remooue: yea one shall cry vnto him, yet can he not answere, nor saue him out of his trouble.

Remember this, and shew your selues men: bring it againe to minde, O ye transgressours.

Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is none else, I am God, and there is none like me,

Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, ^note My counsell shall stand, and I wil doe all my pleasure:

Calling a rauenous bird from the Babylons pride. East, ^note the man that executeth my counsell from a farre countrey; yea I haue spoken it, I will also bring it to passe, I haue purposed it, I will also doe it.

¶ Hearken vnto me, ye stout hearted, that are farre from righteousnesse.

I bring neere my righteousnesse: it shall not bee farre off, and my saluation shall not tarie; and I wil place saluation in Zion for Israel my glorie. 726 CHAP. XLVII. 1 Gods iudgement vpon Babylon and Caldæa, 6 for their vnmercifulnesse, 7 pride, 10 and ouerboldnes, 11 shalbe vnresistable.

Come downe and sit in the dust: O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Caldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.

Take the milstones and grinde meale, vncouer thy lockes: make bare the legge: vncouer the thigh, passe ouer the riuers.

Thy nakednes shalbe vncouered, yea thy shame shalbe seene: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man.

As for our redeemer, the Lord of hostes is his Name, the Holy one of Israel.

Sit thou silent, and get thee into darknes, O daughter of the Caldeans: for thou shalt no more be called the Ladie of kingdomes.

¶ I was wroth with my people: I haue polluted mine inheritance, and giuen them into thine hand: thou didst shew them no mercy; vpon the ancient hast thou very heauily layed the yoke.

¶ And thou saydst, I shall bee ^note a Ladie for euer: so that thou didst not lay these things to thy heart, neither didst remember the later end of it.

Therefore heare now this, thou that art giuen to pleasures, that dwellest carelesly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else besides mee, I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the losse of children.

But these two ^note things shall come to thee in a moment in one day; the losse of children, and widowhood; they shall come vpon thee in their perfection, for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine inchantments.

Vaine sciences.

10   
¶ For thou hast trusted in thy wickednesse: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisedome and thy knowledge, it hath ^note peruerted thee, and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else besides me.

¶ Therefore shall euill come vpon thee, thou shalt not know ^note from whence it riseth: and mischiefe shall fall vpon thee, thou shalt not be able to ^note put it off: and desolation shall come vpon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.

Stand now with thine inchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profite, if so be thou mayest preuaile.

Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels: let now the ^note astrologers, the starre-gazers, the ^note monethly prognosticators stand vp, and saue thee from these things that shall come vpon thee.

Behold, they shall be as stubble: the fire shall burne them, they shall not deliuer ^note themselues from the power of the flame: there shall not bee a coale to warme at, nor fire to sit before it.

Thus shal they be vnto thee with whom thou hast laboured, euen thy merchants from thy youth, they shall wander euery one to his quarter: none shall saue thee. 727 CHAP. XLVIII. 1 God, to conuince the people of their foreknowen obstinacie, reuealed his prophecies. 9 He saueth them for his owne sake. 12 He exhorteth them to obedience, because of his power and prouidence. 16 Hee lamenteth their backewardnesse. 20 Hee powerfully deliuereth his out of Babylon.

Heare yee this, O house of Iacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come foorth out of the waters of Iudah; which sweare by the Name of the Lord, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in trueth nor in righteousnes.

For they call themselues of the holy city, and stay themselues vpon the God of Israel, the Lord of hostes is his Name.

I haue declared the former things from the beginning: and they went God trieth his. foorth out of my mouth, and I shewed them, I did them suddenly, and they came to passe.

Because I knew that thou art ^note obstinate, and thy necke is an yron sinew, and thy brow brasse:

I haue euen from the beginning declared it to thee; before it came to passe I shewed it thee: lest thou shouldest say, Mine idole hath done them, and my grauen image, and my molten image hath commanded them.

Thou hast heard, see all this, and will not yee declare it? I haue shewed thee new things from this time, euen hidden things, and thou didst not know them.

They are created now, and not from the beginning, euen before the day when thou heardest them not; lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them.

Yea thou heardest not, yea thou knewest not, yea from that time that thine eare was not opened: for I knew that thou wouldest deale very treacherously, and wast called a transgressour from the wombe.

¶ For my names sake will I deferre mine anger, and for my praise will I refraine for thee, that I cut thee not off.

10   
Behold, I haue refined thee, but not ^note with siluer; I haue chosen thee in the fornace of affliction.

For mine owne sake, euen for mine owne sake will I doe it; for how should my Name bee polluted? and I will not giue my ^note glory vnto another.

¶ Hearken vnto me, O Iacob, and Israel my called; I am hee, I am the ^note first, I also am the last.

13   
Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and ^note my right hand hath spanned the heauens: when I call vnto them, they stand vp together.

14   
All yee assemble your selues and heare: which among them hath declared these things? the Lord hath loued him: hee will doe his pleasure on Babylon, and his arme shall be on the Caldeans.

15   
I, euen I haue spoken, yea I haue called him: I haue brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous.

16   
¶ Come ye neere vnto me; heare ye this; I haue not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I; and now the Lord God and his Spirit hath sent me.

Thus saith the Lord thy redeemer, the holy one of Israel; I am the Lord thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest goe.

O that thou haddest hearkened to my commandements! then had thy peace beene as a riuer, and thy righteousnesse as the waues of the sea.

19   
Thy seede also had beene as the sand, and the ofspring of thy bowels like the grauell thereof: his name should not haue beene cut off, nor destroyed from before me.

¶ Goe yee forth of Babylon: flee yee from the Caldeans, with a voyce of singing, declare yee, tell this, vtter it euen to the end of the earth: say yee; The Lord hath ^note redeemed his seruant Iacob.

And they thirsted not when he led them through the deserts; he ^note caused the waters to flow out of the rocke for them: he claue the rocke also, and the waters gushed out.

Listen, O yles, vnto me, and hearken yee people from farre. The Lord hath called mee from the wombe, from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.

And he hath made my mouth like a sharpe sword, in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made mee a polished shaft; in his quiuer hath hee hid me,

And sayd vnto me; Thou art my seruant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.

4   
Then I said; I haue laboured in vaine, I haue spent my strength for nought, and in vaine, yet surely my iudgement is with the Lord, and ^note my worke with my God.

¶ And now, saith the Lord that formed me from the wombe to be his seruant, to bring Iacob againe to Christ appointed. him; Though Israel be ^note not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, and my God shall bee my strength.

And he said, ^note It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my seruant to raise vp the tribes of Iacob, and to restore the ^note preserued of Israel: I will also giue thee for a ^note light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my saluation, vnto the end of the earth.

Thus saith the Lord the redeemer of Israel, and his holy one, ^note to him whom man dispiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a seruant of rulers; Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord, that is faithfull, and the holy one of Israel, and he shall choose thee.

Thus saith the Lord, ^note In an acceptable time haue I heard thee, and in a day of saluation haue I helped thee: and I will preserue thee, and giue thee for a couenant of the people, ^note to establish the earth, to cause to inherite the desolate heritages:

That thou mayest say ^note to the prisoners, Goe forth; to them that are in darkenesse, Shewe your selues: they shall feede in the wayes, and their pastures shalbe in all high places.

They shall not ^note hunger nor thirst, neither shall the heate nor sunne smite them: for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, euen by the springs of water shall he guide them.

11   
And I will make all my mountaines a way, and my high wayes shall be exalted.

12   
Behold, these shall come from far: and loe, these from the North and from the West, and these from the land of Sinim.

¶ Sing, O heauen, and be ioyfull, O earth, and breake forth into singing, O mountaines: for God hath comforted his people, and will haue mercy vpon his afflicted.

But Zion said, The Lord hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.

15   
Can a woman forget her sucking child, ^note that she should not haue compassion on the sonne of her wombe? yea they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.

Behold, I haue grauen thee vpon the palmes of my hands: thy walles are

Gentiles called. continually before mee.

17   
Thy children shal make haste, thy destroyers, and they that made thee waste, shall goe forth of thee.

¶ ^note Lift vp thine eyes round about, and behold: all these gather themselues together and come to thee: as I liue, saith the Lord, thou shalt surely clothe thee with them all, as with an ornament, and bind them on thee as a bride doeth.

19   
For thy waste and thy desolate places, and the land of thy destruction shall euen now be too narrow by reason of the inhabitants, and they that swallowed thee vp, shall bee farre away.

20   
The children which thou shalt haue, after thou hast lost the other, shall say againe in thine eares, The place is too straight for me: giue place to mee that I may dwell.

21   
Then shalt thou say in thine heart, Who hath begotten me these, seeing I haue lost my children and am desolate, a captiue and remouing to and fro? and who hath brought vp these? Beholde, I was left alone, these where had they beene?

22   
Thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I will lift vp mine hand to the Gentiles, and set vp my standerd to the people: and they shall bring thy sonnes in their ^note armes: and thy daughters shal be caried vpon their shoulders.

And kings shall be thy ^note nursing fathers, and their ^note queenes thy nursing mothers: they shall bow downe to thee with their face toward the earth, and ^note licke vp the dust of thy feete, and thou shalt know that I am the Lord: for they shall not be ashamed that waite for me.

¶ Shall the pray be taken from the mightie, or ^note the lawfull captiue deliuered?

25   
But thus saith the Lord, Euen the ^note captiues of the mightie shall be taken away, and the pray of the terrible shall be deliuered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will saue thy children.

26   
And I will feede them that oppresse thee, with their owne flesh, and they shall be drunken with their owne ^note blood, as with ^note sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the Lord am thy Sauiour and thy Redeemer, the mightie One of Iacob. Iewes forsaken. 729 CHAP. L. 1 Christ sheweth, that the dereliction of the Iewes is not to be imputed to him, by his abilitie to saue, 5 by his obedience in that worke, 7 and by his confidence in that assistance. 10 An exhortation to trust in God, and not in our selues.

Thus saith the Lord, Where is the bill of your mothers diuorcement, whom I haue put away? or which of my creditours is it to whom I haue sold you? Behold, for your iniquities haue you solde your selues, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.

Wherefore when I came was there no man? when I called, was there none to answere? ^noteIs my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeeme? or haue I no power to deliuer? Beholde, at my rebuke I ^note drie vp the sea: I make the ^note riuers a wildernes: their fish stinketh, because there is no water, and dieth for thirst.

I clothe the heauens with blackenesse, and I make sackcloth their couering.

The Lord God hath giuen me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speake a worde in season to him that is ^note wearie: hee wakeneth morning by morning, hee wakeneth mine eare to heare as the learned.

¶ The Lord God hath opened mine eare, and I was not ^note rebellious, neither turned away backe.

^noteI gaue my backe to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the haire: I hidde not my face from shame and spitting.

¶ For the Lord God will helpe me, therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore haue I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not bee ashamed.

^noteHe is neere that iustifieth me, who will contend with me? let vs stand together: who is ^note mine aduersarie? let him come neere to me.

9   
Behold, the Lord God wil helpe me, who is he that shall condemne mee? Loe, they all shall waxe olde as a garment: the moth shall eate them vp.

¶ Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voyce of his seruant, that walketh in darkenesse and hath no light? let him trust in the

Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compasse your selues about with sparks: walke in the light of your fire, and in the sparkes that ye haue kindled. ^noteThis shall ye haue of mine hand, yee shall lie downe in sorrow. 730 CHAP. LI. 1 An exhortation after the paterne of Abraham, to trust in Christ, 3 by reason of his comfortable promises, 4 of his righteous saluation, 7 and mans mortalitie. 9 Christ by his sanctified arme, defendeth his from the feare of man. 17 He bewaileth the afflictions of Ierusalem, 21 and promiseth deliuerance.

Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousnesse, ye that seeke the Lord: looke vnto the rocke whence yee are hewen, and to the hole of the pitte whence ye are digged.

Looke vnto Abraham your father, and vnto Sarah that bare you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him.

For the Lord shall comfort Zion: he wil comfort all her waste places, and he wil make her wildernes like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord: ioy and gladnesse shalbe found therein, thankesgiuing, and the voice of melody.

¶ Hearken vnto me, my people, and giue eare vnto me, O my nation: for a Law shall proceed from mee, and I will make my iudgement to rest for a light of the people.

My righteousnes is neere: my saluation is gone foorth, and mine armes shall iudge the people: the Iles shall wait vpon me, and on mine arme shall they trust.

Lift vp your eyes to the heauens, and looke vpon the earth beneath: ^note for the heauens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall waxe old like a garment, and they that dwel therein shall die in like maner: but my saluation shal be for euer, and my righteousnes shall not be abolished.

¶ Hearken vnto me ye that know righteousnesse, the people ^note in whose heart is my Law: ^note Feare ye not the reproch of men, neither be yee afraid of their reuilings. Gods righteousnesse.

For the moth shall eate them vp like a garment, and the worme shal eate them like wooll: but my righteousnes shalbe for euer; and my saluation from generation to generation.

¶ Awake, awake, put on strength, O arme of the Lord, awake as in the ancient dayes, in the generations of old. Art thou not it that hath cut Rahab, and wounded the ^note dragon?

Art thou not it which hath ^note dried the sea, the waters of the great deepe, that hath made the depthes of the sea a way for the ransomed to passe ouer?

Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall ^note returne, and come with singing vnto Zion, and euerlasting ioy shalbe vpon their ^note head: they shall obtaine gladnesse and ioy, and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.

I, euen I am hee that comforteth you, who art thou that thou shouldest be afraid ^note of a man that shall die, and of the sonne of man which shall bee made as ^note grasse?

And forgettest the Lord thy maker that hath stretched foorth the heauens, and layed the foundations of the earth? and hast feared continually euery day, because of the furie of the oppressour, as if hee ^note were ready to destroy? and where is the furie of the oppressour?

The captiue exile hasteneth that he may be loosed, and that hee should not die in the pit, nor that his bread should faile.

But I am the Lord thy God, that ^note diuided the sea, whose waues roared: the Lord of hosts is his Name.

And I haue put my wordes ^note in thy mouth, and haue couered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heauens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say vnto Zion, Thou art my people.

¶ ^note Awake, awake, stand vp, O Ierusalem, which hast drunke at the hand of the Lord the cup of his furie; thou hast drunken the dregges of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out.

There is none to guide her among all the sonnes whom shee hath brought foorth: neither is there any that taketh her by the hand, of all the sonnes that she hath brought vp.

^noteThese two things ^note are come vnto thee; who shall be sorie for thee?

The deliuerance of the Church. desolation and ^note destruction, and the famine and the sword: by whom shall I comfort thee?

Thy sonnes haue fainted, they lie at the head of all the streetes as a wilde bull in a net; they are full of the furie of the Lord, the rebuke of thy God.

¶ Therefore heare now this thou afflicted and drunken, but not with wine.

Thus saith thy Lord, the Lord and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I haue taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, euen the dregges of the cup of my furie: thou shalt no more drinke it againe.

But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee: which haue said to thy soule, Bow downe that wee may goe ouer: and thou hast laide thy body as the ground, and as the streete to them that went ouer. 731 CHAP. LII. 1 Christ perswadeth the Church to beleeue his free Redemption, 7 To receiue the Ministers thereof, 9 To ioy in the power thereof, 11 And to free themselues from bondage. 13 Christs kingdome shalbe exalted.

¶ ^note How beautifull vpon the mountaines are the feete of him that The deliuerance of the Church. bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace, that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth saluation, that sayth vnto Zion, Thy God reigneth?

Thy watchmen shall lift vp the voice, with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye when the Lord shall bring againe Zion.

¶ Breake foorth into ioy, sing together, yee waste places of Ierusalem: for the Lord hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Ierusalem.

The Lord hath made bare his holy arme in the eyes of all the nations, and ^note all the endes of the earth shall see the saluation of our God.

¶ Depart ye, depart ye, goe ye out from thence, ^note touch no vncleane thing; goe ye out of the middest of her; be yee cleane, that beare the vessels of the Lord.

For ye shall not go out with haste, nor goe by flight: for the Lord will goe before you: and the God of Israel will ^note be your rereward.

¶ Behold, my seruant shal ^note deale prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.

As many were astonied at thee (his ^note visage was so marred more then any man, and his forme more then the sonnes of men:)

So shall hee sprinckle many nations, the kings shall shut their mouthes at him: for that ^note which had not beene told them, shall they see, and that which they had not heard, shall they consider. 732 CHAP. Christs passion. griefes, and caried our sorrowes: yet we did esteeme him striken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

But he was ^{note note} wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was vpon him, and with his ^{note note} stripes we are healed.

All we like sheepe haue gone astray: we haue turned euery one to his owne way, and the Lord hath ^note layd on him the iniquitie of vs all.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet ^note he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a ^note lambe to the slaughter, and as a sheepe before her shearers is dumme, so he openeth not his mouth.

^noteHe was taken from prison, and from iudgement: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the liuing, for the transgression of my people ^note was he stricken.

And he made his graue with the wicked, and with the rich in his ^note death, because he had done no violence, neither was any ^note deceit in his mouth.

¶ Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him, he hath put him to griefe: ^note when thou shalt make his soule an offring for sinne, he shall see his seede, hee shall prolong his daies, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
