ANNA. (Enclo&longs; ed in the foregoing. )

THE day was pa&longs;t, the en&longs;anguin'd plain,
O'er&longs;pread with many a valiant hero &longs;lain;
When Anna to her brea&longs;t her infant caught,
And 'mong&longs;t the &longs;laughter'd heaps her Henry
&longs;ought.
The pale moon &longs;hed a feeble ray of light,
Which added to the horrors of the night.
Trembling with angui&longs;h and de&longs;pair,
To heaven &longs;he thus addre&longs;s'd her pray'r.
Ju&longs;t power, who &longs;aw my Henry fall,
Conduct me where he lies,
And let me bath his wounds in tears,
And let me &longs;eal his eyes.
This morn, when he went forth, I pray'd
No evil might betide him,
But &longs;ince he fell, oh guide me where,
And let me die be&longs;ide him.
Henry tho' dying knew his Anna's voice,
Cried, “dry tho&longs;e tears, my Anna and rejoice;

For tho' I'm lo&longs;t to thee, yet future &longs;tory,
Shall tell, thy Henry liv'd and died with glory.

And teach my boy the road to fame,” he
cried,
“Farewell!” then faintly gra&longs;pt her hand
and died.
Weeping &longs;he knelt and ki&longs;&longs;ed the breathle&longs;s
clay,
And vow'd his la&longs;t injunctions to obey.
Yes matchle&longs;s youth, tho' lo&longs;t to me,
By hope in&longs;pir'd, in thought I &longs;ee
On glory's wings thy &longs;pirit ri&longs;e,
And angles waft it to the &longs;kies.
I'll tell my &longs;on his father's deeds,
And tho' my heart with angui&longs;h bleeds,
I'll teach his &longs;oul, like thine to &longs;oar,
And mark the path thou'&longs;t trod before.
Then tho' like thee, he yields his breath,
I'll glory in my hero's death.
