The need of a Catalogue of the current Book Publications of the
United States, simple in plan and comprehensive in matter, has been
much felt by booksellers and book-buyers. From causes apparent to all,
Foreign Books have become so expensive here that but few, comparatively,
are bought, American Houses republishing at cheaper rates such
as the popular taste demands.

A complete Catalogue of American Publications would make an expensive
and unwieldy book, not adapted to the wants of the majority of
readers. The publishers of this work have, therefore, adopted a plan of
a Catalogue of such Miscellaneous Books published in the United States
as are most likely to be called for by the public, confining it to reasonable
limits, arranging the works alphabetically (according to the names
