For it bihofte to do these thingis, and not leeue tho. 43   Wo to &yogh;ou, Farisees, that louen the firste chaieris in synagogis, and salutaciouns in chepyng. 44   Wo to &yogh;ou, that ben as sepulcris, that ben not seyn, and men walkynge aboue witen not. 45   But oon of the wise men of the lawe answeride, and seide to hym, Maystir, thou seiynge these thingis, also to vs doist dispit. 46   And he seide,

Also wo to &yogh;ou, wise men of lawe, for &yogh;e chargen men with birthuns which thei moun not bere, and &yogh;e &yogh;ou silf with &yogh;oure o fyngur touchen not the heuynessis. 47   Wo to &yogh;ou, that bilden toumbis of profetis; and &yogh;oure fadris slowen hem. 48   Treuli &yogh;e witnessen, that &yogh;e consenten to the werkis of &yogh;oure fadris; for thei slowen hem, but &yogh;e bilden her sepulcris. 49   Therfor the wisdom of God seide, Y schal sende to hem profetis and apostlis, and of hem thei schulen sle and pursue, 50   that the blood of alle prophetis, that was sched fro the making of the world, be sou&yogh;t of this generacioun; 51   fro the blood of the iust Abel to the blood of Zacharie, that was slayn bitwixe the auter and the hous. So Y seie to &yogh;ou, it schal be sou&yogh;t of this generacioun. 52   Wo to &yogh;ou, wise men of the lawe, for &yogh;e han takun awei the keye of kunnyng; and &yogh;e &yogh;ow silf entriden not, and &yogh;e han forbeden hem that entriden. 53   And whanne he seide these thingis to hem, the Farisees and wise men of lawe bigunnen greuousli to a&yogh;enstonde, and stoppe his mouth of many thingis, 54   aspiynge hym, and sekynge to take sum thing of his mouth, to accuse hym.
