CAP. III.
1 Thes ben the Gentilis, that the Lord
lafte, for to lerne Irael in hem, and alle
that knewen not the bateils of Chananees;
2 and afterward the sones of hem
shulden lerne to stryue with enemies, and
to haue vsage of fi&yogh;tynge in batayl.
3 The
fyue princes of Philistynys, and al Chanane,
and Sydon, and Euee the whiche
dwelten in Liban hil, fro the hil of Baal
of Hermon vnto the entre of Emath.

haue experiens of Yrael, whether thei
wolen here the heestis of the Lord, the
which hath comaundid to the faders of
hem by the hoondis of Moyses, or noon.
5 And so the sones of Yrael dwelten in the
mydil of Chananeei, Ethei, and Amorrei,
and Pherezei, and Euei, and Jebusei.
6 And wyues thei token dou&yogh;tres of hem,
and thei token her dou&yogh;tris to the sones
of hem, and serueden to the goddis of
hem.
7 And thei diden yuel in the si&yogh;t of
the Lord, and for&yogh;eten of the Lord her
God, seruynge to Baalym, and to Astaroth.

took hem into the hoondis of Chusanrasathaym,
kyng of Mesopothanye, and thei
serueden to him ei&yogh;t &yogh;eer.
9 And thei crieden
to the Lord, the which areryde to
hem a saueour, and delyuerde hem, that
is, Othonyel, the sone of Cenez, the lasse
brother of Caleph.
10 And the spiryt of
the Lord was in hym, and he demyde
Irael. And he wente out to fi&yogh;t, and the
Lord took into the hoondys of hym Chusanrasathaym,
the kyng of Syrie, and
oppresside hym.
11 And the loond restid
fourti &yogh;eer; and Othonyel, the sone of
Cenez, died.
12 Forsothe the sones of Yrael
addiden to doon yuel in the si&yogh;t of the
Lord; the which coumfortide a&yogh;ens hem
Eglo, the kyng of Moab, for thei diden
yuel in the si&yogh;t of the Lord.
13 And he
cowplid to hem the sones of Amon and
of Amalech; and he wente, and smoot
Yrael, and he weeldide the citee of
Palmys.
14 And the sones of Yrael serueden
to Eglon, the kyng of Moab,
ei&yogh;teen &yogh;eer.
15 And aftirward thei cryeden
to the Lord; the which reryde to hem a
saueour, Aod bi name, the sone of Gera,
sone of Gemyny, the which either hoond
vside for the ri&yogh;t. And the sones of

kyng of Moab;
16 the which maade to hym
a swerd bitynge in eche side, hauynge in
the mydil a pomel of lengthe of the palm
of an hoond; and he is gird with it
vndur the coot armure, in the ri&yogh;t hipe.
17 And he offerde &yogh;iftis to Eglon, the kyng
of Moab; forsothe Eglon was myche fat.
18 And whanne he hadde offerd to hym
&yogh;iftis, he folwide felawis that with hym
camen;
19 and turned a&yogh;en fro Galgalis,
where weren the mawmettis, seide to the
kyng, A preue word Y haue to thee,
O kyng. And he comaundide silence.
And alle men goon out, that weren about
hym, Aod wente into hym;
20 forsothe he
sat in the somer sowpynge place alone.
And he seide, The word of God Y haue
to thee. The which anoon roos fro the
troon.
21 And `Aod strau&yogh;te out the left
hoond, and he took the swerd fro his
ri&yogh;t hipe; and he pi&yogh;te into his wombe
so strongly,
22 that the pomel folwide the
yren in the wound, and that with moost
fat grees it was streyned; ne he drewe
out the swerd, but so as he smoot, he
lafte in the bodi; and anoon bi the pryuetees
of kynde the tordis of the wombe
bursten out.
23 Forsothe Aod, closyde moost
bisilich the doris of the sowpynge place,
and fastnyd with lok,
24 wente out bi the
postern. And the seruauntis of the kyng
goon yn, sey&yogh;en the &yogh;atis of the sowpinge
place closid, and seiden, Perauenture
he purgith the wombe in the somer sowpynge
place.
25 And abidynge long, to the
tyme that thei weren ashamyd, and seynge
that no man opnyde, thei token the
keye, and opnynge thei foonden her lord
liggynge deed in the erthe.
26 Forsothe
Aod, while thei weren disturbid, flow&yogh;
awey, and he passide the place of mawmettis,

whens he turnede a&yogh;en; and he
cam into Seyrath.
27 And anoon he sownede
with tromp in the hil of Effraym;
and the sones of Yrael dessendiden with
hym, hym goynge in the frount.
28 The
which seide to hem, Folwe &yogh;e me, forsothe
the Lord hath taak oure enemyes,
Moabitis, into oure hoondis. And thei
wenten doun after hym, and thei occupyeden
the foordis of Jordan, that ouersenden
in to Moab.
29 And thei sufferden
not eny man to passe ouere, but thei
smyten Moabites that tyme about ten
thowsand, alle my&yogh;ti and stronge men;
noon of hem my&yogh;te ascaape.
30 And Moab
is mekid that day vndur the hows of
Yrael, and the loond restide foure scoor
&yogh;eer.
31 After this was Sangar, the sone of
Anath, that smoot of Philistiym six hundrid
men with a shaar; and he forsothe
defendide Irael.
