CAP. IV.
1 And nowe, Irael, here the heestis and
domys, that Y teche thee; that doynge
them thow lyue, and goynge yn thow
weelde the loond that the Lord God of
&yogh;oure fadres is to &yogh;eue to &yogh;ow.
2 &YOGH;e shulen
not adde to the word that Y speke to
&yogh;ow, ne take awey from it; kepe &yogh;e the
heestis of the Lord &yogh;oure God, the whiche
Y comaunde to &yogh;ow.
3 &YOGH;oure eyen han
seen alle thingis that the Lord dide a&yogh;ens
Belphegor; what maner wise he hath
brusid down al the heriers of it, fro the
myddil of &yogh;ou.
4 Forsothe &yogh;e that cleuen
to the Lord &yogh;oure God, lyuen alle, to the
day that is nowe.
5 &YOGH;e witen that I tau&yogh;t
&yogh;ow heestis, and ri&yogh;twisnesses, as hath
comaundid to me the Lord my God;
so &yogh;e shulen doo hem in the loond that
&yogh;e ben to weeldynge,
6 and kepe and fulfille
in dede. Forsothe this is &yogh;oure wisdam,
and vndirstondynge before the puplys,
that thei alle, herynge thes heestis,
seyn, Loo! a wise puple and an vndirstondynge!
a greet folk of kynde!
7 Ne
there is other nation so greet, that hath
goddis nei&yogh;ynge to hem, as oure God is
ny&yogh; to alle oure holi preiers.
8 What is
forsothe other folk of kynde so noble,
that hath ceremoyns, and ry&yogh;twis domys,
-- --
and al the lawe, that I purpose to day
before &yogh;oure eyen?
9 Keep therfor thi silf,
and thi soule bisilich; ne for&yogh;eet thow
the wordis that thin eyen han seen, and
ne falle thei out of thin herte, alle the
dayes of thi lijf. Thow shalt teche hem
thi sones,
10 and thi sone sones; the day
`the which thow stodist before the Lord
thi God in Oreb, whanne to me spak the
Lord, seiynge, Gedre to me the puple,
that he here my wordis, and lerne to
drede me al tyme that he lyueth in
erthe, and teche he his sones.
11 And &yogh;e
nei&yogh;eden to the root of the hyl, that brent
vnto heuene; and there weren in it derknessis,
and clowde, and mystynes.
12 And
the Lord spak to &yogh;ow fro the myddil of
the fier; the voyce of the wordis of hym
&yogh;e herden, and the forme out ry&yogh;t saw&yogh;
&yogh;e not.
13 And he shewide to &yogh;ow his couenaunt,
that he comaundide that &yogh;e
shulden doo, and the ten wordis, that he
wroot in the two stonen tablis.
14 And to
me he comaundide in that tyme, that I
shulde teche &yogh;ow cerymoyns, and domes,
that &yogh;e owen to doo in the loond that &yogh;e
ben to weelden.
15 Kepe &yogh;e therfor bisiliche
&yogh;oure soulis; &yogh;e han not seen eny lickenes,
in the day that the Lord spak to
&yogh;ou in Oreb, fro the myddil of fier;
16 lest
perauenture disseyued &yogh;e maken to &yogh;ow a
graued liknes, other ymage of maal, or
of femaal;
17 liknes of alle beestis that
ben vpon erthe, or of briddis vndur heuene
fleynge,
18 and of crepynge beestis
that meuen in the erthe, other of fisshis
that vndir the erthe dwellen in watrys;
lest perauenture the eyen reryd to heuene,
19
thou se the sunne, and the mone,
and alle the sterris of heuene, and by
errour disseyued thow honoure hem, and
-- --
herye, the whiche of nou&yogh;t maad the
Lord thi God, into seruyce to al folk of
kynde, that ben vndur heuene.
20 Forsothe
the Lord took &yogh;ow, and ladde &yogh;ow oute
fro the yren forneys of Egipte, that he
haue a puple bi herytage, as it is in the
day that is nowe.
21 And the Lord was
wrooth a&yogh;ens me, for &yogh;oure wordis, and
swore that I shulde not passe Jordan, ne
goo into the best loond, that he is to
&yogh;yuynge to &yogh;ow.
22 Loo! I dye in this
erthe; I shal not passe Jordan; &yogh;e shulen
passe, and weelde the noble loond.
23 Be war, lest eny tyme thow for&yogh;eete the
couenaunt of the Lord thi God, that I
made couenaunt with thee, and make to
thee a graued liknes of hem that the
Lord defendide to make.
24 For the Lord
thi God fier wastynge is; a God gelows.
25 If &yogh;e geten sones, and sones sones, and
dwelliden in the loond, and desseyued
make to &yogh;ow eny liknes, doynge yuel before
the Lord &yogh;oure God, that &yogh;e terren
hym to wraththe,
26 witnesses Y inwardly
clepe to day heuene and erthe, that soone
&yogh;e ben to perishen fro the loond, that,
Jordan ouerpassid, &yogh;e ben to weelden; &yogh;e
shulen not dwelle in it long tyme, but
the Lord &yogh;ou shal doo awey,
27 and scater
into alle folkis of kynde, and &yogh;e shulen
dwelle fewe in the naciouns, to
whiche the Lord is to lede &yogh;ou.
28 And
there &yogh;e shulen serue to goddis, the
whiche bi hoond of men ben forgid of
tree, and stoon, that seen not, ne heren,
ne eten, ne smellen.
29 And whanne thou
sechist there the Lord thi God, thow
shalt fynde hym; so neuerthelater
that with al thin herte thow seche, and
-- --
with al the tribulacioun of thi soule.
30 After
that thee han foundun alle thingis
that ben before seid, forsothe the last
tyme thow shalt turne a&yogh;en to the Lord
thi God, and thow shalt here the voyce
of hym.
31 For a mercyable God the Lord
thi God is; he shal not leeue thee, ne
vtterlich doo a wey, ne he shal for&yogh;ete the
couenaunt in the which he swore to thi
fadris.
32 Ask thow of the oold dayes that
weren before thee, fro the daye that the
Lord thi God fourmede man vpon erthe,
fro the hi&yogh;est of heuene vnto the hi&yogh;est
of it, if there is doon eny tyme siche a
maner thing,
33 or euer is knowun, that the
puple herde the voyce of the God spekynge
fro the myddil of fier, as thow
herdist, and saw&yogh;;
34 if God dide, that he
&yogh;ede in, and took to hym a folk of kynde
fro the myddil of naciouns, bi temptaciouns,
signes, and wondres, bi fi&yogh;t, and
strong hoond, and strei&yogh;t out the arme,
and orrible si&yogh;tes, after alle thingis that
dide for &yogh;ow the Lord &yogh;oure God, in Egipte,
seynge thin eyen;
35 that thow knewe
for the Lord he a God, and there is noon
other but oon.
36 Fro heuene he made thee
to here his voyce, that he teche thee;
and in the loond he hath shewid to thee
his moost fier, and thow hast herde the
wordis of hym fro the myddil of fier;
for he hath loued thi fadres,
37 and chosun
the seed of hem after hem. And he ladde
out thee, goynge before in his greet vertue,
fro Egipte,
38 that he doo awey moost
naciouns, and the strengere, in thin entree,
and in lede thee, and &yogh;eue to thee
the loond of hem into possessioun, as
thow biholdist in the day that is now.
39 Know thow therfor to day, and thenk in
thin herte, that the Lord he is a God in
heuene aboue, and in erthe benethe, and
there is noon other.
40 Kepe thow the
-- --
heestis of hym, and maundements, that I
comaunde to thee, that wel it be to thee,
and thi sones after thee, and dwelle
thow myche tyme vpon the erthe, that
the Lord thi God is to &yogh;yue to thee.
41 Thanne Moyses seuerde thre citees, bi&yogh;onde
Jordan,
42 at the est plage, that to
hem flee&yogh; the which sleeth a nei&yogh;bour,
not wilnynge, ne were enemy before oon
and other day, and to oon of these citees
my&yogh;te ascape;
43 Bosor, in wildernesse, that
is set in the wijlde feeldi loond, of the
lynage of Ruben; and Ramoth, in Galaad,
that is in the lynage of Gad; and
Golan, in Basan, that is in the lynage of
Manasse.
44 This is the lawe that Moyses
purposide before the sones of Yrael,
45 and
these the witnessyngis, and cerymoyns,
that he spak to the sones of Yrael,
whanne thei wenten out of Egipte,
46 ouer
Jordan, in the valey a&yogh;ens the `mawmet
temple of Phegor, in the loond of Seon,
kyng of Amorrei, that dwellid in Esebon,
whom smoot Moyses. Forsothe
the sones of Irael goon out of Egipte,
weeldiden the loond of hym,
47 and the
loond of Og, kyng of Basan, of the two
kyngis of Amorreis, that weren bi&yogh;onde
Jordan, at the rysynge of the sunne;
48 fro
Aroer, that is set vpon the brenk of the
streme of Arnon, vnto the hil of Seon,
that is in Hermon;
49 al the pleyn bi&yogh;onde

see of widernes, and into the rotis of the
hil of Phasga.
