CAP. XII.

1   The Lord forsothe seyde to Moyses and Aaron in the loond of Egipte, 2   This moneth to &yogh;ow the bigynnynge of the monethis shal be the first in monethes of the &yogh;eer. 3   Spek &yogh;e to al the cumpanye of the sones of Yrael, and sey &yogh;e to hem, The tenthe day of this moneth tak echon a lombe bi meynese and her howsis; 4   if forsothe the noumbre is to litil, that it may not suffice to eet the lombe, he shal tak his nei&yogh;bore, that is ioyned to his hows after the noumbre of the soules, that may suffice to the etyng of the lombe. 5   Forsothe it shal ben a lombe withouten wemme, a maal of o &yogh;eer; after the which riyt &yogh;e shulen take also a kydde; 6   and &yogh;e shulen kepe it vnto the fourtenthe day of this moneth; and al the multitude of the sones of Yrael shal offre it at euen. 7   And thei shulen take of his bloode, and leggen vpon either post, and in the thresshwoldes of the howses, in the whiche thei shulen eet it;

and thei shulen eet flesh that ny&yogh;t, 8   rostid with fier, and therf looues with wylde letuse. 9   &YOGH;e shulen not eten of it eny thing raw, ne sothun with water, but oneli rostid with fier; the heed with his feet and entrayls &yogh;e shulen vowre; 10   ne there shal not leeue of it eny thing to to morwen; and if eny thing be laft, with fier &yogh;e shulen brenne it. 11   So forsothe &yogh;e shulen eten it; &yogh;e shulen girde about &yogh;oure reynes, and &yogh;e shulen haue shoon in &yogh;oure feet, holdynge staues in hoondis; and &yogh;e shulen eete hastiliche; it is forsothe phase, that is to seye, the passyng forth of the Lord. 12   And Y shall passe thur&yogh; al the loond of Egipte that ny&yogh;t, and Y shal smyit alle the first gotun in the loond of Egipte, fro man vnto beeste; and in alle the goddis of Egipte Y shal make domes; Y a Lord. 13   The bloode forsothe shal be to &yogh;ow into tokne, in the housis in the which &yogh;e shulen be; and Y shal se the bloode, and Y shal ouerpasse &yogh;ow; and there shal not be in &yogh;ow a veniaunce destruyinge, whanne Y shal smyit the loond of Egipte. 14   Forsothe &yogh;e shulen han this day into mynde, and &yogh;e shulen halwe it solempne to the Lord in &yogh;oure generaciouns with heriyng euerlastynge. 15   Seuen daies &yogh;e shulen eten therf breed; in the first day there shal be no sour dow&yogh; in &yogh;oure howses; who so euer etith sowred breed, shal perishe that soule fro Yrael, fro the first day vnto the seuenthe day. 16   The first day shal be holy and solempne, and the seuenthe day shal be wurshipful in the same feeste; no thing of werk &yogh;e shulen doon in hem, out tak thes that perteyneth to etyng; 17   and &yogh;e shulen kepe therf breed. Forsothe in that same day Y shal leede &yogh;oure oost out of the loond of Egipte; and &yogh;e shulen kepe this day in &yogh;oure generaciouns in ryte euerlastynge. 18   The firste moneth, the fourtenth day of the moneth, at euen, &yogh;e shulen

eet therf breed, vnto the oon and twentith day of the same moneth at euen. 19   Seuen dayes soure breed shal not be foundun in &yogh;oure howses; who so etith soure breed, his soule shal perishe fro the companye of Yrael, as wel of cumlyngis, as of with ynne borne of the loond. 20   Al soure breed &yogh;e shulen not eet, and in alle &yogh;oure dwellyng places &yogh;e shulen eet therf breed. 21   Moyses forsothe clepide alle the eldren of the sones of Yrael, and seyde to hem, Gothe, takynge a beeste bi &yogh;oure meynese, offre &yogh;e paske; 22   and the litil sprynkil of ysop wetith in bloode, that is in the nethir threswold, and sprengith of it the ouerthreswold, and either post; noon of &yogh;ow alle shal go out of the dore of his hows vnto the morwen tyde. 23   The Lord forsothe shal passe forth smytynge the Egipciens; and whanne he seeth the bloode in the threswald, and in either post, he shal ouer goo the dore of the hows, and he shall not suffre the smyter goo into &yogh;oure howsis, and hurten. 24   Kepe thow this word lawful to thee and to thi sones vnto withouten ende. 25   And whanne &yogh;e shulen goon into the loond that the Lord is to &yogh;yue to &yogh;ow, as he hath bihotun, &yogh;e shulen kepe thes cerymonyes; 26   and whanne &yogh;oure sones shulen seye to &yogh;ow, What is this religioun? 27   &yogh;e shulen seye to hem, It is the sacrifice for the ouercomun enemys of the passing of the Lord, whanne he passide forthe vpon the hows of the sones of Israel in Egipte, smytyng the Egipciens, and oure hows delyuerynge. And the puple bowid anowryde. 28   And the sones of Yrael goon out, diden as the Lord comaundyde to Moyses and Aaron. 29   It was doon forsothe in the myddil of the ny&yogh;t, the Lord smoot alle the fyrst gotun in the loond of Egipte, fro the

fyrst gotun of Pharao, that sat in his see, vnto the first gotun of the caytif womman, that was in prisoun, and alle the first gotun of beestis. 30   And Pharao aroos the ny&yogh;t, and alle his seruauntis, and al Egipte; and ther was sprongun a greet crye in Egipte; and forsothe there was not an hows, in the which leye not the deed. 31   And Moyses and Aaron clepid in the ny&yogh;t, Pharao seith, Ryseth, and goth out fro my puple, and &yogh;e and the sones of Yrael; gothe, and sacrifieth to the Lord, as &yogh;e seyn; 32   &yogh;oure sheip and &yogh;oure droues takith, as &yogh;e han askid; and goynge a wey blesse &yogh;e to me. 33   And the Egipciens nediden the puple to goon out of the loond swiftly, seiynge, Alle we shulen dye! 34   Thanne the puple tok sprengid meel, or it were sowrid; and byndynge it in chaf, putte vpon her shuldres. 35   And the sones of Yrael diden as the Lord comaundide to Moyses; and thei askiden of the Egipciens silueren and goldun vessels, and myche clothing. 36   Forsothe the Lord &yogh;af grace to the puple before the Egipciens, that thei wolden leene hem; and thei spuyleden the Egipciens. 37   And the sones of Yrael &yogh;eden fro Remesse into Sochoth, almoost six hundryd thowsynd of foot men, with outen children and wymmen; 38   but and the comoun of either sex `or kynde vnnoumbrable steyden vp with hem; sheip, and droues, and ful many hauynge lijf of dyuerse kynde. 39   And thei bakiden meele, that a litil before sprengide thei token out of Egipte, and thei maden therf looues vnder asken; and thei my&yogh;ten not be maad sowre, the Egipciens constreynynge to goon out, and not suffrynge to mak eny dwellyng, ne eny thing of sowel there com to to maken redi. 40   The dwellyng places forsothe of the sones

of Yrael, that thei dwelliden yn Egipte, was of four hundred and thretti &yogh;eer; 41   the whiche fulfillid, the same day &yogh;ede al the oost of the Lord out of the loond of Egipte. 42   This is ny&yogh;t of the Lord able to be kept, whanne he ladde hem out of the loond of Egipte; this owen to kepe alle the sones of Yrael in her generaciouns. The Lord forsothe seide to Moyses and 43   Aaron, This is the religioun of phask; ech alien shal not ete therof; 44   al forsothe seruaunt bou&yogh;t be he circumcidid, and so eet he; 45   comlyng and hyryd seruaunt shulen not eet thereof; 46   in oon hows it shal be etun, ne &yogh;e shulen not bere of his fleshe out, ne boon of it &yogh;e shulen breek. 47   Alle the companye of the sones of Yrael shal doo it; 48   that if eny of pilgrymes wole come into &yogh;oure heriyng of religioun, and do the pask of the Lord, before eche maal child of him shal be circumcidid, and thanne with ri&yogh;t he shal halewe, and he shal be togidere as a with ynne gotun of the loond; if eny forsothe be not circumcidid, he shal not ete therof. 49   The same lawe shal be to the with ynne gotun, and to the comlyng tilyer, that pilgrimagith anentis &yogh;ow. 50   And alle the sones of Yrael diden as the Lord comaundide to Moyses and Aaron. 51   And in the same day the Lord ladde the sones of Yrael out of the loond of Egipte, bi her companyes.
