1 Jacob forsothe herynge that lyuelodes
weren solde in Egipte, seide to his sones,
Whi ben &yogh;e necgligent?
2 I haue herd
that wheet is solde in Egipte, descende
&yogh;e, and biggith to vs nedeful thingis, that
we mowen lyue, and we ben not consumed
with myseys.
3 Thanne descendynge the
ten britheren of Joseph that thei my&yogh;ten
bigge whete in Egipte,
4 Beniamyn withholdun
at home of Jacob, the which seide
to the britheren of hym, Lest perauenture
in the weye eny thing he suffre of yuel.
5 Thei ben goon into the loond of Egipte,
with othere that &yogh;eden to bigge; forsothe
there was hungur in the loond of Chanaan.
6 And Joseph was prince of Egipte,
and at his bikenyng whete cornes weren
solde to the peplis. And whanne his britheren
hadden lowtid him,
7 and he knewe
hem, as to aliens harder he spak, askynge
hem, Whens cam &yogh;e? The which answeryden,
Fro the loond of Chanaan, that
we biggen nedeful thingis to oure lyuelod.
8 And neuerthelater he the britheren
knowinge is not knowun of hem,
9 and recordid

saw&yogh;, seith to hem, Aspies &yogh;e ben, &yogh;e ben
comen that &yogh;e my&yogh;ten se the febler thingis
of the loond.
10 The whiche seiden, It is
not so, lord, but thi seruauntis comen,
that thei my&yogh;ten bie meetis;
11 alle the
sones of o man we ben, pesibli we comen,
ne thi seruauntis eny thing casten of
yuel.
12 To whom he answeryde, Other
weies yt is, the vnwardid thingis of this
loond &yogh;e ben comen to biholde.
13 And thei
seiden, Twelue britheren, thei seyn, thi
seruauntis we ben, the sones of o man in
the loond of Chanaan; the leest is with
oure fader, the tother is not aboue.
14 That
is, he seith, that I speke, aspies &yogh;e ben,
for now experyment of &yogh;ow I shal taak,
15
bi the helthe of Pharao &yogh;e shulen not
goon hens, to the tyme that &yogh;oure leest
brother come;
16 sendith of &yogh;ou oon, and
bringe he him, &yogh;e forsothe shulen ben in
boondis, to the tyme that the thingis that
&yogh;e han seide ben proued, whether fals or
soth thei ben; ellis bi the helth of Pharao
aspies &yogh;e ben.
17 Thanne he took hem
to warde thre daies;
18 the thridde forsothe
dai ledynge out of prisoun, seith,
Do &yogh;e that I seide, and &yogh;e shulen lyue,
God forsoth Y drede;
19 if &yogh;e be pesible,
&yogh;oure o brother be boundun in prisoun;
&yogh;e forsothe goth, and berith the whete
that &yogh;e han bou&yogh;t into &yogh;oure howsis,
20 and
&yogh;oure leest brother bryngith to me, that
Y may proue &yogh;oure wordis, and &yogh;e not
die.
21 And thei diden as he seide, and
thei speken to gideres, Thur&yogh; desert thes
thingis we suffren, for we han synned in
oure brother, seynge the angwishe of the
soule of hym, while he preyde vs, and
we herden not, therfore cometh vpon vs
this tribulacioun.
22 Of the whiche oon, Ruben,
seith, Whether Y seide not to &yogh;ow,
Nyle &yogh;e synne in the childe, and &yogh;e herden

not me? loo! the blood of hym is out
sou&yogh;t.
23 Thei wisten not forsothe that Joseph
shulde vndurstonde, therthur&yogh; that
bi a mene persone vndoynge both the langagis
he spak to hem.
24 And he turnyde
hym silf awey a litil, and he wepte, and
turned a&yogh;en he spak to hem;
25 and takynge
Symeon, and byndynge hym, hem present,
and comaundide to the mynystris,
that thei shulden fille the sackis of hem
with whete, and leggen a&yogh;en the money
of eche in her sackis, &yogh;euun ouer meetis
in the weie; the whiche diden so.
26 And
thei berynge the whete in her assis &yogh;eden
forth,
27 and the sak of oon openyd, that
he my&yogh;te &yogh;yue to his beest meete in an
inturnyng place to reste, biholdun the
money in the mouth of the sak,
28 seide to
his britheren, To me is &yogh;oldun my money,
loo! it is had in the sak; and thei stonyed
al aboute and sturbed, seiden togideres,
What forsothe is this that God
hath doon to vs?
29 And thei comen to Jacob,
her fader, in the loond of Chanaan,
and tolden to hym alle thingis that was
fallun to hem,
30 seiynge, The lord of the
loond hard spake to vs, and he wenyde
vs to be spies of the prouynce;
31 to whom
we answerden, We ben pesible, ne we ben
not aboute eny spies;
32 twelue britheren
of o fadur getun we ben, the oon is not
aboue, the leest with the fadur dwellith
in the loond of Chanaan.
33 The which
seith to vs, So I shal proue that &yogh;e ben
pesible; &yogh;oure o brother leeue &yogh;e anentis
me, and meetis to &yogh;oure housis nedeful
take &yogh;e,
34 and goth, and &yogh;oure leest brother
ledith to me, that Y knowe that &yogh;e ben
not aspyes, and this that is holdun in
boondis &yogh;e mowen reseyue, and theraftir
of biggyng that &yogh;e wolen &yogh;e han leue.
35 Thes thingis seid, whanne eche heelden
out whete, thei founden in the mouth of
the sackis boundun moneys. And alle

36 the fader Jacob seide,
With outen free children &yogh;e han maad me
to be; Joseph is not aboue, Symeon is
holdun in bondes, Beniamyn &yogh;e shulen
take a wey fro me; alle thes yuels in me
han bacwarde fallun.
37 To whom answerde
Ruben, My two sones sle thou,
if Y brynge hym not a&yogh;en to thee; taak
hym in myn hoond, and Y hym to thee
shal &yogh;elde a&yogh;en.
38 And he, My sone, he
seith, shal not descende with &yogh;ow; the
brother of hym is deed, and he alone
abidith; if ony thing to hym of aduersite
falle in the loond to the which &yogh;e
shulen goon, &yogh;e shulen lede doun myn
hoore heeris with sorwe to helle.
