1 Dyne, the dow&yogh;ter of Lya, forsothe was
goon oute, that she my&yogh;te se wymmen of
that regioun.
2 Whom whanne hadde seen
Sichym, the sone of Emor Euey, the
prince of that loond, louede hir, and rauyshide,
and slepte with hir, with force
oppresside a mayden.
3 And the soule of
hym was glewid with hir, and hir sory

he swagide with softnessis.
4 And he
goynge to Emor, his fadir, Tak to me,
he seith, this damysele to wijf.
5 The
which whanne Jacob hadde herd, absent
the sones, and in the foode of the beestis
occupied, he heelde his pees, to the tyme
thei comen a&yogh;en.
6 Emor forsothe, the fader
of Sichem, goon oute, that he my&yogh;te
speke to Jacob,
7 loo! the sones of hym
comen fro the feelde. And the thing herd
that was fallun, thei weren ful wroth,
therthur&yogh; that a fowle thing he hadde
wrou&yogh;t in Israel, and the dow&yogh;ter of Jacob
defowlid, an vnleueful thing hadde
fulfillid.
8 And so Emor speke to hem,
The soule of my sone Sichem hath cleued
to &yogh;oure dow&yogh;ter, &yogh;yueth hir wijf to hym,
and ioyne we togidere maryagis;
9 &yogh;oure
dow&yogh;tres &yogh;if &yogh;e to vs, and oure dow&yogh;tres
taak &yogh;e, and dwel &yogh;e with vs;
10 the loond
is in &yogh;oure power, excersise &yogh;e, chaffare &yogh;e,
and haue &yogh;e it.
11 But and Sichem to the
fader and to the bretheren of hir seith,
Fynde Y grace bifore &yogh;ow, and what
thing &yogh;e ordeyne Y shal &yogh;yue;
12 eche &yogh;e
dower, and aske &yogh;e &yogh;iftis, gladly Y shal
&yogh;yue that &yogh;e asken; oonly &yogh;yf &yogh;e to me
this damesele to wijf.
13 The sones of Jacob
answeriden to Sichem and to the
fader of hym in trechory, waxynge cruel
for the stupre of the sister,
14 We mowen
not doon that &yogh;e asken, ne &yogh;yue oure sister
to a man vncircumsidid, the which is vnleful
and wrongful anentis vs.
15 But in
that we mowen ben togidere boundun, if
&yogh;e wole be like vs, and al kynde of maal
be circumsidid in &yogh;ow,
16 thanne we shulen
&yogh;yue and take togidere oure dow&yogh;tris and
&yogh;ouren; and we shulen dwelle with &yogh;ow,
and we shulen be o peple.
17 If forsothe &yogh;e
wolen not be circumsidid, we shulen take
our dow&yogh;tres, and goo awey.
18 The profre
of hem pleside to Emor and to Sichem,

19 ne the &yogh;onglyng tariede,
but anoon that that was askid he shulde
fulfil; forsothe he louede ful greetli the
damysele, and he was noble in al the
hows of his fader.
20 And thei goon yn the
&yogh;ate of the cite, speken to the puple,
Thes men ben pesible,
21 and wolen dwelle
with vs; chaffare thei in the loond, and
excersise thei it, the which large and
broode nedith tyliers; the dow&yogh;tris of
hem we shulen take wyues, and oure we
shulen &yogh;yue to hem.
22 O thing is that
puttith off so myche good; if we circumsiden
oure males, folwynge the ryte of
the folk,
23 and the substaunce of hem, and
the beestis, and al that thei han shulen
be ouren; oonli in that assent we, that
dwellynge togidrys we maken o peple.
24 And alle thei ben assentid, alle the malis
circumsidid.
25 And loo! the thridde day,
whanne the sorwe of the woundes is
moost greuows, the two sones of Jacob,
Symyon and Leuy, the britheren of Dyne,
drawen to her swerdis, ben goon into the
cyte tristiliche, and sleyn alle the males;
Emor and Sichem togideres thei slewen,

takynge Dyne, her sister, fro the hows of
Sichem.
27 The which goon oute, the tother
sones of Jacob fellen vpon the slayn men,
and thei distruyden the cyte, in to vengeaunce
of the stupre,
28 the sheep of hem,
droues, and asses, and alle thingis wastynge,
that in the howsis and in the feeldis
weren;
29 the litil children forsothe, and
the wyues of hem thei ladden cheytiues.
30 The whiche thingis ful doon hardilich,
Jacob seyde to Symyon and Leuy, &YOGH;e han
disturbid me, and &yogh;e han maad me haatsum
to Chananeis and Phare&yogh;eis, the dwellers
of this loond; we ben fewe, and thei
gederyd to giderys shulen smyte me, and
Y shall be doon awey and myn hows.
31 Thei answeriden, Whether as a strumpet
thei shulden mysuse oure sistre?
