1 The wisdom of alle olde men the wise
man shal ful out sechen; and in profetes
he shal take heed.
2 The telling of the
nemned men he shal kepen; and in to the
slei&yogh;tes of parables togidere he shal entre.
3 The hid thingus of prouerbis he shal
sechen out; and in the hid thingus of
parables he shal dwelle.
4 In the myddel
of grete men he shal mynystre; and in
the si&yogh;t of the chef domes man he shal
apere.
5 In to the lond of alien folkys he
shal passe; goodus forsothe and euelis in
alle thingus he shal asa&yogh;e.
6 His herte he
shal take to wake the morutid to the
Lord that made hym; and in the si&yogh;t of
the he&yogh;este he shal louli pre&yogh;en.
7 He
shal opene his mouth in orisoun; and for
his giltus he shal louli pre&yogh;e.
8 If forsothe

he, as reynes, shal sende the speches of
his wisdam; and in orisoun he shal knouleche
to the Lord.

and in his hid thingus shal counseilen.
11 He open shal make the disciplyne
of his lore; and in the lawe of the
testament of the Lord he shal glorien.
12 Manye shal preise the wisdam of hym;
and vnto the world he shal not be don
awey.
13 The memorie of hym shal not go
awei; and the name of hym shal be so&yogh;t
fro ieneracioun in to ieneracioun.
14 His
wisdam folkis of kynde shul telle out;
and his preising the chirche shal shewen
out.
15 If his name schal abijde stille, he
shal leue more than a thousend; and if
he shul resten, it shal profiten to hym.
16 &YOGH;it I shal counseilen that I telle out, as
with wodnesse forsothe I am fulfild;
17 and
in voys he seith, Al aboute hereth me,
&yogh;ee Goddus frutes, and as roses plauntid
vpon ryueres of watris, maketh frutes.
18 As Liban, smel of swotenesse haue &yogh;ee.
19 Floureth floures, as lilie; &yogh;yueth smel,
and brauncheth in to grace. And preisith
togidere the song dite; and blisseth the
Lord in his werkis.
20 &YOGH;yueth to his name
gret doyng, and knoulecheth to hym in
the vois of &yogh;oure lippis, in song dites of
lippis, and in harpis; and thus &yogh;ee shuln
seyn in knoulechyng,
21 The werkis of the
Lord, alle thei ben ful goode.
22 In the
wrd forsothe of hym stood the water as
an hep; and in the wrd of the mouth of
hym as resceyuyng places of watris.
23 For
in the heste of hym a pes makere is mad;
and ther is not lassyng in the helthe of
hym.
24 The werkes of alle flesh biforn
hym; and ther is not any thing hid fro

25 Fro the world vnto the world
he biholdith; and no thing is merueilous
in the si&yogh;t of hym.
26 Ther is not to sey,
What is this, or, What is that? forsothe

28 and as the vnyuersel flod drunkede the
erthe, so the wrathe of hym shal eritagen
Jentyles, that so&yogh;ten hym not out.
29 What
manere he turnede watris in to dro&yogh;te, and
the erthe is dried, and the weies of it to
the weies of them ben forth stra&yogh;t; so
to synneres offenciouns in the wrathe of
hym.
30 Goodis to goode men ben foormed
fro the bigynnyng; so to most wicke
men goodis and eueles.
31 The bygynnyng
of necessarie thing to the lif of men,
water, fyr, iren, and salt, and mylc, and
bred of tried flour, and hony, and clustre
of grape, and oile, and clothing.
32 Alle
these to hoely men in to goodus; so and
to vnpitous men and to synneres in to
eueles thei shul ben al turned.
33 Ther
ben spirites that to veniaunce ben formed;
and in ther wodnesse thei confermeden
ther tormentes.
34 And in tyme of
ful endyng thei shul heelden out vertue;
and the wodnesse of hym that made
them thei shul shende.
35 Fyr, hail, hungir,
and deth; alle these to veniaunce
ben foormed;
36 teeth of bestes, and scorpiouns,
and serpentes, and two bitende
swerd veniende in to outlawyng vnpitous
men.
37 In the hestes of hym thei
shul plenteuously eten, and vpon erthe
in nede thei shul be greithid; and in
ther tymes thei shul not passe biside a
wrd.
38 Therfore fro the bygynnyng I am
confermede; and I counseilede, and tho&yogh;te,
and scrites lafte.
39 Alle the werkes of the
Lord good; and ech werk in his hour
shal vndermynestren.
40 Ther is not to

seyn, this than that is werse; forsothe
alle thingus in ther tyme shul be proued.
41 And now in alle herte and mouth preyseth
togidere, and blisseth the name of
the Lord.
