CAP. XVII.
1 Betere is a drie morsel with io&yogh;e, than
an hous ful of sacrifises of victorie with
strif.
2 A wis seruaunt shal lordshipen
to sones foolis; and among bretheren
eritage he shal deuyde.
3 As bi fyr is
proued siluer, and gold bi the chymney,
so hertes the Lord preueth.
4 The euele
man obesheth to the wicke tunge; and
the desceyuable consenteth to the liende
lippis.
5 Who dispiseth a pore man, mysseyth
to his makere; and who gladeth in
the falling of an other, shal not ben vnpunshid.
6 The croune of olde men sones
of sones; and the glorie of sones the
fadris of hem.
7 There semeth not the
fool faire set woordis; ne the prince a
liende lippe.
8 Most kinde iemme the
abiding of the abidere; whider euere he
turneth hymself, prudentli he vnderstant.
9 Who helith the gilte, secheth
frenshipis; who with an other sermoun
reherceth, seuereth the federed.
10 Mor
profiteth correccioun anent the prudent,
than an hundrid veniaunces anent the
fol.
11 Euermor striues secheth the euel
man; the cruel forsothe aungil shal be
sent a&yogh;en hym.
12 It spedeth mor to a&yogh;en
come to a she bere, whan hir whelpis
ben take awey, than to a fol trostende
to hymself in his folie.
13 Who &yogh;eldeth
euelis for goodis, shal not go awei euel
fro his hous.
14 Who leueth water, hed is
of striues; and er he suffre wrong blamyng,
dom he forsaketh.
15 And who iustefieth
the vnpitouse, and who condempneth
the ri&yogh;twise, abominable is either
anent God.
16 What profiteth to the fol to
han richessis, whan wisdam bie he mai
-- --
not? Who hei&yogh; maketh his hous, secheth
falling; and who shoneth to lerne,
falleth in to euelis.
17 Alle time looueth,
that is a frend; and a brother in anguysshis
is preued.
18 A fool man shal
for io&yogh;e flappe with hondis, whan he
shal behoten for his frend.
19 Who sweteli
thenketh discordis, looueth striues; and
who enhauncith his herte, secheth falling.
20 Who is of peruertid herte, findeth
not good; and who turneth the tunge,
shal falle in to euel.
21 Born is the fool
in his shenshipe; but ne the fader in
the fol shal glade.
22 Io&yogh;ende inwit maketh
bri&yogh;t age; a drery spirit ful out drieth
bones.
23 &YOGH;iftis of the bosum the vnpitous
taketh, that he peruerte the pathis
of dom.
24 In the face of the prudent
shyneth wisdam; the e&yogh;en of foolis in
the endis of erthe.
25 The wrathe of the
fader a sone fol; the sorewe of the modir
that gat hym.
26 It is not good to bern
in harm to the ri&yogh;twis; ne to smyte a
prince that ri&yogh;t demeth.
27 Who tempreth
his woordis, ta&yogh;t and prudent is; and of
precious spirit the man lerned.
28 The
fool forsothe, if he holde his pes, wis
shal ben holde; if he threste togidere
his lippis, vnderstondende.
