1 And whan al the ost hadde herd Olofernes
of hedid, flei&yogh; mynde and counseil
fro them, and with onli trembling and

Betulie with alle the prestis, that he see
Judit.
10 The whiche whan hadde gon out

seiende, Thou glorie of Jerusalem, thou
gladnesse of Irael, thou the wrshipe
doende of oure puple,
11 that didist manli,
and thin herte is coumfortid, for thi that
chastite thou loouedest, and aftir thi man
an other thou knewe not; and therfore
the hond of the Lord coumfortide thee,
and therfore thou shalt be blissid in to
with oute ende.
12 And al the puple seide,
Be it do! be it do!
13 Forsothe bi thretti
da&yogh;es vnnethe ben gedered the spoilis of
the Assiries of the puple of Irael.
14 But
alle the proper richessis of Olofernes, that
ben proued to han ben, thei &yogh;eue to Judit,
in gold, and siluer, and clothis, and
iemmes, and in alle purtenaunces to
household; and alle thingus ben taken
to hir of the puple.
15 And alle puplis
io&yogh;eden, with wymmen, and maidenes, and
&yogh;unge men, in orgnys and harpis.

he&yogh;e ieauntus putten hem to hym; but
Judit, wydewe, the do&yogh;ter of Merari, in
the fairnesse of hir face vnloside hym.
9 Forsothe she clothide hir fro the cloth
of hyr widewehed, and clothide hir in
the cloth of gladnesse, in ful out io&yogh;ing
to the sonus of Irael.
10 She oyntide hir
face with an oynement, and she bond
togidere hir crisp heris with a mitre, to
desceiuen hym.
11 Hir ga&yogh;e shon rauesheden
his e&yogh;en, hir fairnesse made his lif
caitif; sche girde of with a swerd his
haterel.
12 The Persis grisiden hir stedefastnesse,
and Medis hir hardynesse.
13 Thanne &yogh;elleden the tentis of Assiries,
whan apereden my meke, drie waxende
in thrist.
14 The sonus of child wymmen
pungeden them, and as childer fleende
slowen hem; thei persheden in bataile fro
the face of my Lord.
15 A newe ympne
singe wee to the Lord oure God.
16 Lord
Adonai, a gret God thou art, and beforn
alle cleer in thi vertue, and whom no
man mai ouercome.
17 To thee serue alle
thi creature, for thou hast seid, and
thei ben maad; thou sentist thi spirit,
and thei ben formed; and ther is not
that withstonde to thi comanding.

puple after the victorie cam to Jerusalem
to honoure the Lord; and anoon as thei
weren purified, alle offreden brent sacrifises,
and vouwis, and ther behestis.
23 Forsothe Judit alle the armes of bataile
of Olofernes, that the puple &yogh;af to hir,
and the canope, that she hadde taken,
she toc in to the curs of for&yogh;eting.
24 Forsothe
al the puple was io&yogh;eful after the
face of seintis; and bi thre monethis the
io&yogh;e of this victorie is solempnysid with
Judit.
25 After thoo da&yogh;es forsothe eche
wente a&yogh;een in to his owne; and Judit
is maad gret in Betulie, and was more
cler to alle men of the lond of Irael.
26 Forsothe
she was ioyned to the vertue of
chastite, so that she knew no man alle
the da&yogh;is of hir lif, sithen is dead Manasses,
hir husbonde.
27 Forsothe she was
in feste da&yogh;es forth goende with gret
glorie.
28 Forsothe she dwelte in the hous
of hir man an hundrid &yogh;er and fiue; and
she lafte hir damesele free. And she is
dead, and biriede with hir husbonde in
Betulie;
29 and al the puple weilide hir
seuen da&yogh;es.
30 In al the space forsothe of
hir lif was not that disturbide Irael,
and after hir deth manye &yogh;er.

forsothe of this feste of victorie of the
