CAP. XVI.
1 And the Lord seide to Samuel, How
long thow weilist Saul, whanne Y haue
throwun hym a ferre, that he regne not
vpon Irael; fil thin horn with oyle, and
come, that Y sende thee to Ysaye Bethlamyte;
forsothe Y haue purueyd in the
sonys of hym a kyng to me.
2 And Samuel
seith, Howe shal Y goo? forsothe
Saul shal here, and he shal slee me.
And the Lord seith, A calf of the droue
thow shalt take in thin hoond, and sey,
To offre to the Lord Y am comen.
3 And
thou shalt clepe Ysaye to the slayn sacrifice,
and I shal shewe to thee what thou
doo; and thou shalt anoynt whom euer
Y shal shewe to thee.
4 Thanne Samuel
dide, as the Lord spak to hym; and he
cam into Bethleem, and the eldrys of the
cytee a&yogh;en comynge to hym wondriden,
and seiden, Whether pesible is thin yncomynge?
5 And he seith, Pesible; to offre
to the Lord Y am comen; be &yogh;e halowid,
and cometh with me, that I offre. Thanne

he halowid Ysaye, and hys sones, and
clepide hem to the sacrifice.
6 And whanne
thei weren comen yn, he saw&yogh; Elyab,
and seith, Nowe before the Lord is the
crist of hym.
7 And the Lord seide to
Samuel, Ne behold thou the cheere of
hym, ne the hei&yogh;te of his stature; for Y
haue throwun hym aweye, ne aftir the
lokynge of men Y deme; forsothe a man
seeth tho thingis that ben opyn, forsothe
the Lord lokith the herte.
8 And Ysaye
clepide Amynadab, and brou&yogh;te hym before
Samuel; the which seide, Ne this
the Lord hath chosun.
9 Forsothe Ysaye
brou&yogh;te forth Sama; of whom he seith,
Also this the Lord hath not chosun.
10 And so Ysaye brou&yogh;te forth his seuen
sones before Samuel; and Samuel seith
to Ysaye, The Lord hath not chosen of
thes.
11 And Samuel seide to Ysaye, Whether
nowe fulfillid ben the sones? The
which answerde, &YOGH;it another there is, a
litil child, and fedith sheep. And Samuel
seith to Ysaye, Send, and bryng forth
hym; forsothe ne we shulen sitte, before
that he come hidir.
12 Thanne he sente,
and brou&yogh;te hym forth; forsothe he was
rodi, and fayr in si&yogh;t, and sembli in
face. And the Lord seith, Rise, and
anoynt hym; forsothe he it is.
13 Thanne
Samuel took an horn of oyle, and anoyntide
hym in the myddis of the britheren
of hym; and the Spirit of the
Lord is ful sent into Dauyd fro that
day and therafter. And Samuel rysynge
wente into Ramatha.
14 And so the Spyrit
of the Lord wente awey fro Saul, and
the shrewid spyrit fro the Lord `shook
hym.
15 And the seruauntis of Saul seiden
to hym, Loo! the yuel spiryt of the Lord
shakith thee;
16 comaunde the lord oure
kyng, and thi seruauntis that before thee
ben, sechen a man kunnynge to pleye

with harpe, that whanne the yuel spyrit
of the Lord takith thee, he pleye with
his hoond, and li&yogh;ter thou bere.
17 And
Saul seith to his seruauntis, Purueieth
to me sum man wel harpynge, and
bryngith hym to me.
18 And answerynge
oon of the children seith, Loo! I saw&yogh;
the sone of Ysaye Bethlemyte, kunnynge
to harpe, and moost my&yogh;ti bi strength,
a man curaiows in batayl, and wyse in
wordis, and a fayre man; and the Lord
is with hym.
19 Thanne Saul sente messagers
to Ysaye, seiynge, Send to me
Dauith thi sone, the which is in the
lesewis.
20 And so Ysay took an asse ful
of loouys, and a galoun of wyn, and o
kyd of the she geet; and he sente bi the
hoond of Dauid his sone to Saul.
21 And
Dauid cam to Saul, and stood before
hym; and he louyde hym ful mych, and
is made a squyer of hym.
22 And Saul
sente to Ysaye, seiynge, Stoond Dauyd
in my si&yogh;t, forsothe he hath foundun
grace in myn eyen.
23 Thanne whanne
euere the yuel spyrit of the Lord cau&yogh;te
Saul, Dauid took an harp, and smoot
with hys hoond, and Saul was refourmyd,
and li&yogh;ter he hadde; forsothe the yuel
spiryt wente a wey fro hym.
