1   And He said also to his disciples, There was a certain rich man, who had a steward; and he was accused to him ^note of wasting his ^note goods. 2   And he called him, and said unto him, What is this I hear of thee? give up the accounts of thy stewardship, for thou canst be no longer steward. 3   And the steward said in himself, What shall I do? ^note now my master takes away the stewardship from me; I am not able to ^note work, and I am ashamed to beg. 4   I know what I will do, that when I am turned out of my ^note place, they may receive me into their houses. 5   So he called ^note his master's debtors to him, and said to the first, How much owest thou to my ^note master? and he said, an hundred baths of oil. 6   And he said to him, Take thy bill, and sit down ^note and write but fifty. 7   Then he said to another, And how much owest thou? and he said, an hundred ^note measures of wheat: and he said to him, Take thy bill, and write fourscore. 8   And his master commended the ^note dishonest steward as having acted ^note prudently: for the ^note men of this ^note world are as to their affairs wiser than the ^note children of light. 9   And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends with these ^note unrighteous treasures, that when they ^note fail, ^note ye may be received into everlasting habitations. 10   He, that is faithful in the lest, is faithful also in much: and he, that is unjust in the lest, is unjust also in much. 11   If therefore ye have not been faithful in the ^note false riches, who will intrust you with the true? 12   and if ye have not been faithful in that which was another's, who will give you that which is your own? 13   No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or at lest he will be attached to the one, and ^note neglect the other. Ye cannot serve God and Mammon.

14   And the pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things; and derided Him. 15   And He said unto them, Ye ^note justify yourselves before men, but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed

among men is abomination in the sight of God. 16   The law and the prophets continued until John: from that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every one presseth into it. ^note 17   Though it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than one tittle of the law to fail. 18   Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery; and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.

19   Now there was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen, living ^note voluptuously and splendidly every day. 20   And there was a ^note poor ^note man named Lazarus, 21   who was laid at his gate full of sores, and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table: ^note and the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass that the ^note poor man died, 22   and ^note was carried by angels to Abraham's bosom: ^note the rich man also died, and was buried. 23   And in ^note hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham from afar, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24   And he cried out and said, Father Abraham, have pity on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25   And Abraham said, Son, remember that thou receivedst thy good things in thy life-time, and likewise Lazarus his evils: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 26   And besides ^note, there is a great ^note gulf fixed between us and you; so that they, who would pass from hence to you, cannot; nor can they pass to us, who would come from thence. 27   Then he said, Therefore I intreat thee, Father, that thou wouldst send him to my father's house: 28   for I have five brethren; that he may testify to them my misery, least they also come into this place of torment. 29   Abraham ^note answered him, They have Moses and the prophets, let them hear them: 30   and he said, Nay, father Abraham, but if one went to them from the dead, they will repent. 31   And he ^note replied, If they hearken not to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one should rise from the dead.
