The Editors to the Reader. We, the Editors of this Work, beg leave here to assure the Public that we have been scrupulously exact in presenting it to them just as the pious Author left it:—We have not presumed to alter even the few phrases (and very few they are) which some Readers may wish had been more modern, or at which the delicacy of others may take offence; because we persuade ourselves that the serious judicious Christian will much more readily forgive them than he would have forgiven a want of fidelity in us. We take the liberty a little to press one Hint, which will be met with in the Author's own Advertisement, by recommending as close an Examination as possible of small Particles, which may escape the notice of a transient Reading, but will be found on an accurate Inspection to distinguish this from, the Old Translation more than almost any other Circumstance;—and that in many Places, where the Sense of the Passage is materially affected. We hope this Book will be found, in such a Use of it, a very improving and therefore welcome CLOSET-COMPANION, and in that Persuasion we chearfully leave it to the Candor of those into whose Hands it may fall, and to the Blessing of GOD. M. BRADSHAW. S. WORSLEY.

Author's Advertisement.

The English Translation of the BIBLE in the Reign of King James I. is, no doubt, a very good one; and justly so esteemed to this day; though it be above a hundred and fifty years old; but it is not to be wondered at if some words and phrases, then in use and well understood, should by this time become obsolete and almost unintelligible to common readers; such as mote, we do you to wit, do thy diligence, shall for will, will for shall, quick for living, should for would, &c. The principal attempt therefore of this Translation is both to bring it nearer to the original, either in the text, or notes; and to make the form of expression more suitable to our present language. For as the English tongue, like other living languages, is continually changing, it were to be wished that the translation of the sacred oracles could be revised by public authority, and reduced to present forms of writing and speaking, at lest once in a century: but though this be not allowed for public use, it is to be hoped some private persons may receive benefit by that which is now offered.

I have no design to countenance any particular opinions or sentiments: I have weighed as it were every word in a balance; even to the minutest Particle; begging the gracious aids of the divine Spirit, to lead me into the true and proper meaning, that I might give a just and exact translation of this great and precious Charter of Man's salvation.

Use it, Christian Reader, for thy benefit: and be assured the Translator seeks neither worldly gain nor human applause, but the honor and approbation of his great LORD, and the good of thy precious Soul.

-- --

The Words in Italics, such as who had been the wife, Matt. i. 6, are not in the Greek; but usually supplied to make the Sense compleat, as by former translators: different ways of expressing the original words are given at the bottom of the page (instead of the side) with Or prefixed: a different Reading in the Original is distinguished by Al. for aliter otherwise: where the Greek is more literally rendered than in the text it is marked by Gr: and the notes which are doubly distinguished from the rest by being printed in Italics and referred to by asterisks, &c. contain certain words, without which the Sense in the English is perfect, tho' they are to be found in the Greek.

The numbers of all the chapters and verses correspond with those in the translation of the NEW TESTAMENT appointed to be read in Churches: tho' there are some few chapters, which for obvious reasons do not begin paragraphs, as all the rest do.

Concerning the principal peculiarities of Spelling that will be remarked here, I have made it a general rule to leave out the superfluous u in the Termination our; except in Verbs, to distinguish them from Nouns: and as to least and lest, to write the Adverb with an a and the superlative of less without it; as, “least a worse thing come unto thee,” “less than the lest of all saints.”
