WRITTEN PROBABLY AT EPHESUS AFTER 70 A.D

This Letter was apparently written by the author of ‘The Good News according to John,’ with which book, both in language and thought, it has a close connexion. It deals with errors that were rife in the Church in the writer's day, by re-asserting the revelation in the incarnate Christ of the Life, and Light, and Love of God.

It is a Homily rather than a Letter, and was possibly intended to circulate among the Churches of Asia Minor. It seems to have been written after the fall of Jerusalem, and at a time when the Second Coming of the Christ appeared to be imminent (2. 18).
