Note return to page 1 Granville's version of THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, which polishes Shakespeare's diction but coarsens the character of Shylock, was first performed at Lincoln's Inn Fields in 1701 and regularly revived until the reappearance of Shakespeare's play at Drury Lane in 1741.
