Note return to page 1 Talfourd's punning travesty of THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, which amused even Queen Victoria, was first published in 1849, but later expanded to include further topical jokes against contemporary actors, including Charles Kean, the decor of whose 1858 production was mimicked when the travesty was revived in 1860.
