SOUNDS OF THE SUMMER NIGHT.

The soft winds sigh above the slumbering flowers,
And tremble 'mid the tresses of the trees;
A child's sharp cry disturbs the solemn hours,
That woman's voice endeavors to appease;
A dull piano's melancholy strains
Fall faintly on my ear, borne from afar;
A night-key's click the midnight hush profanes,
And harshly clangs a door's discordant jar;
A dog howls dismally across the way,
Anon darts through the air a vengeful stone;
And sounds of whispered voices hither stray,
Revealing lovers' vows by their soft tone;
Yon cat-calls cut discretion to the quick, —
O, that kind fate would grant my hand a brick!
