Note return to page 1 Garrick's three-act, musical abbreviation of THE TEMPEST ran for twelve performances at Drury Lane in 1756, but was thereafter replaced by the conservative abridgement of the original published in Bell's edition. It draws in part on Davenant and Dryden's THE ENCHANTED ISLAND, and interpolates 32 songs, drawn from a variety of sources.

Note return to page 2 It is hoped that the Reader will excuse the omission of many passages of the first Merit, which are in the Play of the Tempest; it being impossible to introduce them in the plan of this Opera.
