Note return to page 1 Although, as its preface records, Cibber's play ran into trouble with the censors when first acted in 1699, it was one of the most popular and successful stage versions of Shakespeare ever prepared, keeping the original RICHARD III wholly off the stage until the late nineteenth century. It enlarges the role of Richard at the expense of the rest of the cast, in part by borrowings from the HENRY VI plays, and in part by supplying him with a number of new lines, two of which have survived both into the language at large and into productions of the play down to Laurence Olivier's film and beyond: “Off with his head— so much for Buckingham” and “Conscience, avaunt!— Richard's himself again.”
