Advertisement TO THE READER.

Tho a Preface to a Work of this Nature is generally expected; yet I shall beg to be excus'd at this Time, having plac'd the following Essay to supply that Defect. I shall only here Advertise the Reader, that he is not to expect in the Remarks the Pedantic, Etymologies, and Grammatical Enquiries into the Diction of our Author; But I content my self to consider Him only as a Poet, and therefore to confine my self to his Poetical Beauties, and Errors; tho' I have indeed added an Index of all his Antiquated Words, as far as all the Glossaries Extant cou'd help me out. But as Mr. Dryden has Observ'd, Shakespear is frequently apt to Coin Words, which are no where else to be found, and their Sense scarce to be discover'd by the Context.

-- --

I have nothing further to add but a Rectification of a Mistake in Shakespeare's Latin Inscription.

Ingenio Pylum, Genio Socratem, Arte Maronem:
Terra tegit, Populus Mæret, Olympus habet.

Besides this there is the following Epitaph in English which is likewise Omitted.

Stay Passenger, Why dost thou go so fast?
Read if thou canst, whom envious Death has plac'd
Within this Monument; Shakespear, with whom
Quick Nature dy'd, whose Name doth deck the Tomb
Far more, than Cost, since all that he has Writ
Leaves living Art, but Page to serve his Wit.
