PREFACE.

[figure description] Preface.[end figure description]

The Sketches and Stories here offered to
the public, have not entirely the attraction
of novelty to plead in their favour—but the
Author trusts that the sentiments inculcated,
and principles illustrated, are such as will
bear a reiteration.

It was her intention, while displaying, accurately,
various traits in the American character,
to furnish hints and examples which
might be beneficial to society. If an impression,
favourable to the cause of truth and
virtue, is left on the mind of the reader, the
Author will be satisfied, though the meed of
fame is not awarded her.
