The seal depicts the Roman goddess of wisdom, Minerva, in the foreground with the Rotunda and East Lawn filling the space behind her. On the left side of the image, an olive branch appears in the upper foreground. The bookplate has an off-white background with the seal printed in dark blue ink.[end figure description]

SYDNEY AND HIS PLANTATION FRIENDS. [figure description] Illustration Page. Image of two African-American men and a white boy fishing. The boy sits on the knee of one of the men, and they both hold the fishing rod. The other man sits relaxed on the ground at thier feet. The boy is dressed nicely in trousers, waistcoat, tie, jacket, stiff hat and shoes. The men wear open shirts and trousers that are a little short with no shoes.
