A Dictionary of Practical Medicine; comprising a General
Pathology, the Nature and Treatment of Diseases,

Edited, with Additions, by Charles A. Lee, M.D. Now
publishing in Parts, price 50 cents each. About 25 Parts
to complete the Work, 12 of which are now published.

The great recommendation of this dictionary is its terseness and precision.
Dr. Copland's references to the sources whence he derives the
information he conveys are admirably placed, giving the essence of the
knowledge necessary to be communicated in order to a right understanding
of the subject which is treated, without entering into the diffuseness
of the original text.—New-Orleans Bulletin.

Dr. Copland has here published a series of essays which may be justly
said to be unrivalled for extent and accuracy of information, methodic
arrangement, and the condensed form in which they are composed. If
he proceeds as he has commenced, he will produce a work which is yet
unrivalled in the English language.—Edin. Medical and Surgical Journ.

A History of Greece. By Rt. Rev. Connop Thirlwall,
Bishop of St. David's. 2 vols. 8vo. Muslin gilt. $3 50.

Although the author's fancy is everywhere subject to his correct historical
taste, the student will not fail to detect traces of that scholar-like
delight in the graceful and lovely fictions of antiquity, which is so peculiarly
attractive to minds of congenial temper. It animates the reader
through the toilsome intricacy of some parts of his progress, like a brook
by the wayside, which, though it only sparkles occasionally in the traveller's
eye, yet enlivens him by the sense of its constant companionship.—
Edinburgh Review.

The Ancient History of the Egyptians, Carthaginians,

The History of the Conquest of Mexico, with a preliminary
View of Ancient Mexican Civilization. By William
H. Prescott, Esq. 3 vols. 8vo. Portraits and Map. Muslin
gilt. $6 00.

There is no exaggeration in stating that the “Conquest of Mexico”
contains most of the valuable qualities which distinguish the most popular
historical writers in our language. It unites the chivalrous but truthful
enthusiasm of Col. Napier, and the vivacity of the accomplished author
of the “Siege of Granada,” with the patient and ample research of
Mr. Tytler.—Edinburgh Review.

While the English language shall exist, we venture to say Prescott's
“History of Ferdinand and Isabella” will be read.—Biblical Repository.

We know of scarcely any other work so amusing, instructive, and
powerfully attractive as this; it possesses every charm which elegance
of diction, gracefulness of style, and interest of subject can impart.—

The Works of Charles Lamb. With his Letters, and
a Sketch of his Life. By Thomas Noon Talfourd. New
Edition. 2 vols. royal 12mo. Portrait. $2 00.

Charles Lamb is an old and valued friend to all true lovers of the beautiful,
the quaint, and the quiet of literature Let those who have no
read him, do so at once, but not hurry through the pages, expecting to
find excitement and incident in every paragraph. They must read as
one angles—placidly, lazily, and patiently, and they will not be disappointed.
Charles Lamb has justly been considered by some as the model
essayist: his pleasantry and true gentleness have rendered his productions
universal favourites. His delicious “Essays” are full of wisdom,
pregnant with genuine wit, abound in true pathos, and have a rich vein
of humour running through them all.—Hall.

The Family Library. Now comprising 173 vols. 18mo.

Bound uniformly, but each work sold separately.
$77 05 per set.

A title which, from the valuable and entertaining matter the collection
contains, as well as from the careful style of its execution, it well deserves.
No family, indeed, in which there are children to be brought
up, ought to be without this library, as it furnishes the readiest resources
for that education which ought to accompany or succeed that of the boarding-school
or the academy, and is infinitely more conducive than either
to the cultivation of the intellect.—Monthly Review.

We recommend the whole set of the Family Library as one of the
cheapest means of affording pleasing instruction, and imparting a proper
pride in books, with which we are acquainted.—United States Gazette.

VALUABLE BOOKS OF TRAVEL PUBLISHED BY HARPER & BROTHERS, NEW-YORK.

[figure description] Advertisement 010.[end figure description]

Observations in the East, chiefly in Egypt, the Desert,
Palestine, Syria, Asia Minor, and Constantinople. By
John P. Durbin, D.D. 2 vols. 12mo. Engravings. Muslin
gilt. $2 00.

It is a most rich, intellectual feast. —Buffalo Advocate.

The volumes are, without exaggeration, equal in interest and graphic
effect to the best books of modern travel with which we are acquainted.
There is an off-hand frankness and spirit about the sketches, which are
always marked by caution and discrimination, so that the statements are
as reliable as they are attractively interesting.—Spirit of the Times.

This book is curious, attractive, and instructive; the author has avoided
all useless lumber, and recorded in simple, unaffected language, his
observations upon what met his eye. His book shows the scholar, the
Christian, the philosophical observer, and the American patriot, but not
a bit of the pedant or the bore; a more agreeable companion or guide
could scarcely be found than Dr. Durbin.—Buffalo Com. Advertiser.

Observations in Europe, principally in France and Great
Britain. By John P. Durbin, D.D. 2 vols. 12mo. Engravings.

Eighth Edition. Muslin gilt. $2 50.

Dr. Olin's excellent volumes convey a great amount of information, also
remarkably accurate; his volume contains the best account of Egypt that
has appeared in this country—perhaps in the language.—Dr. Durbin.

This work, from the pen of the distinguished President of the Wesleyan
University, is among the latest on the subject. It is rich in information,
pervaded by a lofty spirit, and entitled to entire confidence.—Dr.
Potter's Hand-book.

We can most confidently and cordially recommend this book to our
readers, as a production which does honour to the author.—Methodist

Narrative of a Mission to Bokhara, in the Years 1843
1845, to ascertain the Fate of Colonel Stoddart and Captain
Conolly. By Rev. Joseph Wolff, D.D., LL.D. 8vo. Engravings.
Muslin gilt. $2 00.

This is a most interesting and instructive work, containing a sketch
of the distinguished author's life, and a rich treasury of Oriental missionary
information, interspersed with incidents of thrilling interest. The
community are already familiar with the name of the Rev. Joseph Wolff,
one of the most remarkable men of the present age.—Christian Intel.

A work of great interest, and full of the most curious information and
thrilling details. It will be seen to be the work of an eccentric man, but
even this rather adds to its interest than detracts from it.—Albany Spectator.

Cosmos: a General Survey of the Physical Phenomena
of the Universe. By Alexander Von Humboldt. From the
Fourth German Edition. 8vo. Muslin gilt. To be completed
in Four Numbers. Two now published.

The work contains the latest results of the sciences and the last conclusions
drawn from them upon the mind and understanding of a great philosopher.
The work is one of the finest and most finished blossoms which
the cultivation of natural sciences has ever produced.—Broadway Journal.

This work, therefore, will be henceforth the text-book of all who would
learn how nature has herself unfolded the story of her birth, and how
those she nourished by her truths have recorded what she taught.—London
Critic

Travels and Researches of Alexander Von Humboldt;
being a condensed Narrative of his Journeys in the Equinoctial
Regions of America, and in Asiatic Russia; together
with Analyses of his more important Investigations. By
W. Macgillivray, A.M. 18mo. Engravings. 45 cents.

Humboldt is the most illustrious traveller of his day. Nothing seems
too vast, too varied, too wonderful, or too minute for the keen eye, penetrating
intellect, and unwearied exertions of this extraordinary man. A
botanist, zoologist, statist, and philosopher, the genius of this great writer
seems to have been peculiarly fitted for surveying the varieties and
immensity of the physical world; and he accordingly takes the foremost
rank of all travellers, dead or living.—Dibden.

This work has been justly called by a competent judge, “a work of gigantic
extent and richness, to which the modern literature of Europe
can hardly offer a parallel.”—Encyclopædia Americana.

Travels of Marco Polo, greatly amended and enlarged
from valuable early Manuscripts recently published by the
French Society of Geography, and in Italy by Count Baldelli
Boni. With copious Notes, illustrating the Routes
and Observations of the Author, and comparing them with
those of more recent Travellers. By Hugh Murray,
F.R.S.E. 18mo. Two Maps and a Vignette. Muslin
gilt. 45 cents.

The best edition of the travels of Marco Polo that we have ever seen.
This famous old traveller, after so long labouring under a cloud of suspicion
as to the verity of his statements, has lately, by the industry of
modern commentators, been rubbed bright, in some degree, and his narratives,
always interesting, are now read with a degree of faith which
hitherto was not exercised in their perusal. The volume before us contains
maps, copious notes, and illustrations by the editor, and is every
way a most interesting book.—Post.

A work hitherto inaccessible, though much renowned in the world of
letters. This is another of the great literary performances that originated
within the walls of a dungeon, Marco Polo being, at the time of its composition,
imprisoned at Pisa. This enterprising traveller explored more
in the very heart of the Chinese Empire, and acquired more intimate
knowledge of the wandering Tartars of Asia, than any of his predecessors,
and, indeed, we might add, his successors, for in the 13th century
he enjoyed the immunity, since denied, of visiting Pekin with his eyes
open;
his description, therefore, cannot but be interesting and valuable.—
New-York Commercial Advertiser.

Journey to Mount Ararat. By Dr. Friedrich Parrot.
Translated by W. D. Cooley. 18mo. Map and Engravings.
Muslin gilt. 50 cents.

This book is a desideratum in English literature. There is a popular

and Mohammedan nations associate with one of the most impressive
events in the earliest records of our race.—London Spectator.

Thomas J. Green. Illustrated by Drawings taken from
Life by Charles M`Laughlin, a Fellow-prisoner. 8vo.
Muslin gilt. $2 00.

This work is one of startling and most absorbing interest; besides
being very graphic in description, it gives examples of personal and
moral courage and of fighting, such as brings back the remembrance of
the fields of Cressy and Agincourt, for odds in the encounters.—AngloAmerican.

The history of the most thrilling incidents in the affairs of Texas, from
the pen of the leading actor, and in a style spirited, strong, and exciting.
It will be read with great avidity.—Evening Post.

A volume of romantic interest; it contains scenes and incidents connected

gives us an insight into the character and conduct of men, which we read
with no little interest.—Evangelist.

Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology

Ship Beagle round the World, under the Command of Capt
Fitz Roy, R.N. By Charles Darwin, M.A., F.R.S. 2 vols.
12mo. Muslin gilt. $1 00.

This is a first-rate work, combining popular interest with scientifie
ability and value, better than any similar book we have seen. It is written
in a graceful and popular style.—New-York Courier and Enquirer.

Travels in Europe and the East. By Valentine Mott,
M.D. 8vo. Muslin gilt. $1 90.

The learned professor has judiciously abstained from the more common

the most distinguished schools of medicine and surgery, and to a familiar

whatever came under his notice with a critical eye, and has given some
new and striking views, particularly in regard to the Pythian Oracle, the
Temple of Apollo at Delphis, and the religion of the ancient Egyptians.—

The Glory and Shame of England. By C. Edwards
Lester. 2 vols. 12mo. Engravings. Muslin gilt. $1 50.

The bold and romantic spirit of this work has already procured it no

fearful character.—Methodist Quarterly Review.

Attempt to reach the North Pole. By Sir W. E. Parry,
R.N. 2 vols. 18mo. Portrait. Muslin gilt. 90 cents.

The history of these enterprises will be found exceedingly interesting;
much curious and valuable information is also given in relation to the
dreary and inhospitable regions of northern Siberia, and the various
tribes that inhabit them.—Methodist Quarterly Review.

great Southwestern Prairies, the Camanche and Caygüa
Hunting-grounds, &c. By George Wilkins Kendall. 2
vols. 12mo. Map and Engravings. New Edition. Muslin
gilt. $2 50.

It has seldom fallen to our lot to read a narrative of so interesting and
touching incidents of travel as abound in these volumes; we were not
prepared to find in them reading so very attractive, nor could we form
any idea that such a narrative of toils and sufferings as are here detailed
by the sufferer himself, would present so many points of instruction to
the general reader.—Methodist Quarterly Review.

A Pilgrimage to Treves, through the Valley of the Meuse
and the Forest of Ardennes, in the Year 1844. By Charles
Edward Anthon. 12mo. Muslin gilt. 75 cents.

This book is a modest, carefully-written narrative of facts, with few
reflections, and those generally marked with good sense and proper feeling.—
Buffalo Commercial Advertiser.

If this attractive volume possessed no other claim to attention, it has
the charm of novelty about it, the author having chosen no beaten track

the attention of the reader by its unaffected simplicity. It inculcates
morality, religion, and temperance, in a most attractive manner.—Baltimore

.

This is a very delightful moral story, portraying the adventures of a
sailor's li e, and that change of heart which fits the voyager on the tempestuous
ocean of this world's hopes to moor his bark finally in the haven
of eternal rest. There is much instruction as well as interesting narrative
to be found in these pages.—North American.

BY MRS. MARY S. B. DANA.—18mo, muslin gilt, 37½ cents.

This is a story of no ordinary interest, consisting of a series of perilous
adventures, depicting crime and its consequences with a skill at once artistical
and powerful, and portraying the sweet influences of Christianity
in all their beauty and loveliness. A parent could scarcely find a more
instructive tale for his children, and young men might derive influences
from its perusal that would save them many a heartache.—Auburn Journal.

The story contained in this book abounds with interesting incidents to
keep the attention awake, and suggests many important lessons to reward
a diligent perusal. There is a simplicity and truthfulness about the
characters which beguiles the reader into an impression that he is occupied
with a narrative of veritable facts. It teachers the young, in a most
persuasive manner, the importance of right principles of action, and
shows them the extreme danger of ever beginning to wander from the
path of honor and integrity.—Evangelist.

18mo, muslin gilt, 37½ cents.

An admirable volume; admirable in style, in sentiment, and in tendency.—
Courier and Enquirer.

By the Author of “Conquest and Self-Conquest.”—18mo, 37½ cents.

We have read this volume with unmingled satisfaction. It is replete
with instruction, not only for the young, but for all who are concerned
to know and judge their motives of life. We thank the author for her
nice and interesting discriminations between the motives of conduct.
Indeed, we do not know of any works of this description from the American
press which are entitled to a more just popularity than those which
have proceeded from the pen of this writer. They place her beside the
Edgeworths, and the Barbaulds, and the Opies, who have so long delighted
and instructed our children and us.—New-York Observer.

By the Author of “Conquest and Self-Conquest.”—18mo, 37½ cents.

A book most worthy to be put into the hands of youth engaged in their
educational course, and can not but inspire the love of truth and goodness
for their own sakes.—Biblical Repository.

This little work is designed to inculcate upon the minds of youth the
importance of a steadfast adherence to principle in the concerns of life;
and among “children of a larger growth” its perusal may afford both
pleasure and improvement.—Bedford Mercury.

For truthfulness of natural delineation and high moral tone, these
works are unexcelled.—North American.

18mo, muslin gilt, 45 cents.

Lively in narrative, interesting in incident, and ingenious in construction,
the work is at the same time a safe guide to the young in the path
to happiness, honor, and usefulness.—New-York Observer.

By the Author of “Wealth and Worth.”—18mo, muslin gilt, 45 cents.

Well calculated for old or young, but more especially to encourage the
young to act from principle and live for usefulness. No one can read
these books without feeling encouraged to act honorably and honestly.—
Newburg Courier

BY MISS SEDGWICK.—18mo, muslin gilt, 45 cents.

We recognize in these books feminine skill and delicacy of delineation,
with unusual discrimination of character and knowledge of the heart.
Another high recommendation is their marked religious tone.—Norwich
Courier

BY MISS SEDGWICK.—18mo, muslin gilt, 45 cents.

Every person would be benefited mentally and morally by a perusal of
this book; it is full of graphic delineation and touching pathos.—True

These sketches, from the pen of one of the best writers in the country,
commend themselves to the public with no ordinary force.—Evangelist.

BY MISS SEDGWICK.—18mo, muslin gilt, 45 cents.

There is a sweetness and sociability in her stories we meet with nowhere
else.—Newburg Courier.

Her writings are always well worth reading. These stories are designed
for the young more particularly, but the quiet good sense and
sterling principle they contain will make them acceptable to maturer
minds.—Herald.

These are beautiful stories, full of graphic delineation and touching
pathos: extremely well conceived and executed.—True Sun.

BY MISS SEDGWICK.—18mo, muslin gilt, 45 cents.

A very interesting collection, all of which point an excellent moral.
We suppose few could read these works without acknowledging they
were not only deeply interested, but that they felt the force of the lessons
they inculcate.—Herald.
