Note return to page 1 Macready first played Lear in London in 1834, in a version which, like Edmund Kean's, restored the tragic ending but not the Fool, and it was not until 1838 that he was persuaded to perform this, which although heavily abbreviated from Shakespeare's text was nonetheless the first stage version of KING LEAR to retain the Fool since the 1670s.
