Prolog of John. This is John euangelist, oon of the disciplis of God, the which a mayde of God was chosun, whom fro the sposailis willinge be weddid, God clepide; to whom double witnesse of maydenhod in the gospel is &yogh;eue; in that, that bothe bifore he is seid louyd of God, and to him God hangynge in the cross bitook his modir, that a mayden schulde kepe a mayde. Forsothe he openynge in the gospel what he was, bigynnynge the work of an vncoruptible word, `other Goddis sone, he aloone witnessith Goddis sone to be maad man, and the li&yogh;t, `that is, Crist, to haue be not comprehendid of derknessis, `that beth synneris; puttinge the firste sygne, that God made in sposailis, that he schewinge what he was, schulde schewe to men redinge, that where the Lord was preied to mete, ou&yogh;t fayle the wyn of sposailis, and that oolde thingis chaungid, alle newe thingis that ben ordeyned of Crist schulde appere. This gospel forsothe he wrot in Asye, aftir that in the yle of Pathmos he hadde write the Apocalips; that to whom `that in the principal of canoun incoruptible principle is fornootid, to him also incoruptible ende by a mayde in the apocalips schulde `be &yogh;olde; seiynge Crist, I am alpha and o, that is, bigynnynge and with outen ende. And this is John, the which knowinge the day of his passinge to haue be come ouer, his disciplis clepid to gidere in Ephesie, by many preuyngis of tokenes schewinge Crist, dessendid in to a dolue place of his graue; and, preier maad, he was put to his fadris, as straunge fro sorwe of deeth, as he is founde alien fro corupcioun of fleisch. Neuertheles aftir alle he wroot the gospel, and that was dewe to a mayde. Of the whiche thingis neuertheles othir the deposiscioun of the tyme of writingis, or the ordynaunce of bookis; therfore by alle thingis by vs is not expowned, that to the `kunnynge desyr y-sett, bothe to men sechinge, fruyt of traueyl, and to God the doctryne of maystrie, be kept. Here endith the prolog, and bigynneth the gospel.

This is Joon euangelist, oon of the disciplis of the Lord, the which is a virgyn chosun of God, whom God clepide fro the sposeilis, whanne he wolde be weddid; and double witnesse of virginyte is &yogh;ouun to hym in the gospel; in this that he is seid loued of God byfor othere disciplis, and God hongynge in the cros bitook his modir in kepyng to hym, that a virgyn schulde kepe a virgyn. This Joon in the gospel bigynneth aloone the werk of vncorruptible word, and witnessith, that the kyndeli sone of God is maad man, and that the li&yogh;t was not takun of derknessis; and he schewith the firste myracle, whiche God dide at the weddyngis, to schewe where the Lord is preyed to the feeste, the wyn of the weddyngis owith to faile, that whanne elde thingis ben chaungid, alle newe thingis that ben ordeyned of Crist, appere. Joon wroot this gospel in Asie, aftir that he hadde writun the Apocalips in the ile of Pathmos; netheles he wroot the gospel aftir alle the gospeleris, that also an vncorruptible ende `schulde be &yogh;oldun bi a virgyn in the Apocalips to hym, to whom an vncorruptible bygynnyng is &yogh;ouun in Genesis, in the bigynnyng of hooly scripture; for Crist seith in the Apocalips, Y am the bygynnyng and the ende. And this Joon is he, that knewe that the day of his departyng was comun; and he clepide togidere hise disciplis in Effesie, and schewide Crist bi many preuyngis of myraclis, and &yogh;ede doun in to a doluyn place of his biriyng; and whanne he hadde maad preier, he was put to hise fadris, and was so myche without sorewe of deth, hou myche he is foundun cleene fro corrupcioun of fleisch.
