Introductory matter
Here begynneth the prolouge on Mathew.
Mathew of Jewerye born, as he is `putt first in ordre, so first he wrote the gospel
in Jewes langage, whas cleepyng to God was from peplicanis dedis; he takynge bifore
the bygynnyng is of twey, Abraham and Dauid, in the generacioun of Crist, of oon,
that is, Abraham, of the whiche the first circumcisioun was in fleshe, of an other,
Dauith, whas eleccioun was efter herte. Of bothe fadris forsothe Crist was bore.
And so the noumbre of fourtene thries putte, he strecchynge forth the bygynnyng fro
feyth of bileuynge, that was in Abraham, in to the tyme of chesynge, that was in
Dauith, and dressynge fro the chesyng anoon in to the day of transmygracioun, and
diffynynge fro the day of transmygracioun anoon in to Crist, he shewith the generacioun
of the cummynge of Crist fulfillid, other passynge in renninge, that he,
maakynge good bothe to the noumbre and to the tyme, bothe shulde shewe hym silf
whiche he were, and, in hym silf mynystrynge the work of God, also in hem, whas
kynred he putte, shulde not denye the witnesse of Crist workynge fro the bygynnyng.
Of alle whoche thingis the tyme, the ordre, the noumbre, the disposicioun,
other the resoun, that Crist is God, that is necessarie to the feith, the whiche was
maad of a womman, maad vnder lawe, bore of a mayde, suffride in fleshe, al thing
ficchide in the cros, that he ouercommynge thilke thingis in hym silfe, rysynge in
body, bothe the name of the fadir in fadris to the sone, and sones name to the fadir
restoringe in sones, with outen bygynnyng, with oute eendynge, shewynge the fadir to
be oon with hym, for he is oon. In the whiche gospel it is profitable to men
desyrynge God, so to knowe the first, the mydmeste, other the last, that thei, redynge
bi alle thingis, vndirstonde bothe the clepynge of the apostil, and the work of the
gospel, and the loue of God kennynge in fleshe, and thei biknowe in hym, in the

Matheu that was of Judee, as he is set first in ordre of the gospelleris, so he wroot
first the gospel in Judee, and fro the office of a tolgaderer he was clepid to God.
Whanne this Matheu hadde prechid first the gospel in Judee, and wolde go to
hethene men, he wroot first the gospel in Ebreu, and lefte it to mynde to Cristen
men of the Jewis, fro whiche he departide bodili; for as it was nedeful, that the
gospel were prechid to the confermyng of feith, so it was nedeful, that it were writen
also a&yogh;ens eretikis. Thou&yogh; manye men han write the gospel, foure oonli, that is,
Matheu, Mark, Luyk, and Joon, han the witnessyng of autorite. For thei tellen the
feith of the Trynyte, bi foure partis of the world; and thei ben as foure wheelis in
the foure horsid carte of the Lord, that berith hym aboute bi preching of the gospel;
and mankynde that was slayn bi foure dethis, shulde be qwikenyd bi the prechyng of
hem. And therfor the gospels of othere writers fellen doun, and ben not resceyued,

Also the foure gospelleris ben vndirstonden bi foure figuris of goostli preuyte. Matheu
is vndurstondun by man, for he duellith principali aboute the manhod of Crist; Mark
is vndurstondun bi a lioun, for he tretith of Cristis risyng a&yogh;en; Luke is vndirstonden
bi a calf, and tretith of presthod; Joon is vndurstondun bi an egle, and writeth hi&yogh;lier
the sacramentis ether hooli priuytees of the Godhed. Forsothe Crist, whom thes
gospelleris discryuen, was a man borun of the virgyn; he was a calf, in offryng, ether
diynge on the cros; he was a lioun, in risynge a&yogh;en; and he was an egle, in ascencioun.
Ethir the manhed of Crist is signified in man, presthod is signified in the calf, rewme
is signified in the lioun, and the sacrament of Godhed is signified in the egle; that is,
by thes foure beestis it is declarid, that Jhesu Crist is God and man, king and prest.

2 Therfore
whanne thou doist almes, nyle thou
trumpe tofore thee, as ypocritis doon
in synagogis and stretis, that thei be
worschipid of men; sotheli Y seie to &yogh;ou,
they han resseyued her meede.
3 But
whanne thou doist almes, knowe not
thi left hond what thi ri&yogh;t hond doith,
that thin almes be in hidils,
4 and thi
fadir that seeth in hiddils, schal quyte
thee.
5 And whanne &yogh;e preyen, &yogh;e schulen
not be as ipocritis, that louen to preye
stondynge in synagogis and corneris of
stretis, to be seyn of men; treuli Y seie

to &yogh;ou, thei han resseyued her meede.
6 But whanne thou schalt preye, entre in
to thi couche, and whanne the dore is
schet, preye thi fadir in hidils, and thi
fadir that seeth in hidils, schal &yogh;elde to
thee.
7 But in preiyng nyle &yogh;ee speke
myche, as hethene men doon, for thei
gessen that thei ben herd in her myche
speche.
8 Therfor nyle &yogh;e be maad lich
to hem, for &yogh;our fadir woot what is
nede to &yogh;ou, bifore that &yogh;e axen hym.
9 And thus &yogh;e schulen preye, Oure fadir
that art in heuenes, halewid be thi
name;
10 thi kyngdoom come to; be thi
wille don `in erthe as in heuene;
11 &yogh;yue
to vs this dai oure `breed ouer othir
substaunce;
12 and for&yogh;yue to vs oure
dettis, as we for&yogh;yuen to oure dettouris;
and lede vs not in to temptacioun,
13 but
delyuere vs fro yuel.
14 Amen. For if
&yogh;e for&yogh;yuen to men her synnes, &yogh;oure
heuenli fadir schal for&yogh;yue to &yogh;ou &yogh;oure
trespassis.
15 Sotheli if &yogh;e for&yogh;yuen not to
men, nether &yogh;oure fadir schal for&yogh;yue
to &yogh;ou &yogh;oure synnes.
16 But whanne &yogh;e
fasten, nyle &yogh;e be maad as ypocritis sorewful,
for thei defacen hem silf, to seme
fastyng to men; treuli Y seie to &yogh;ou,
they han resseyued her meede.
17 But
whanne thou fastist, anoynte thin heed,
and waische thi face,
18 that thou be not
seen fastynge to men, but to thi fadir
that is in hidlis, and thi fadir that seeth
in priuey, shal &yogh;elde to thee.
19 Nile &yogh;e
tresoure to &yogh;ou tresouris in erthe, where
ruste and mou&yogh;te destrieth, and where
theues deluen out and stelen;
20 but gadere
to &yogh;ou tresouris in heuene, where
nether ruste ne mou&yogh;te distrieth, and
where theues deluen not out, ne stelen.
21 For where thi tresoure is, there also thin
herte is.
22 The lanterne of thi bodi is

thin i&yogh;e; if thin i&yogh;e be symple, al thi
bodi shal be li&yogh;tful;
23 but if thin i&yogh;e be
weiward, al thi bodi shal be derk. If
thanne the li&yogh;t that is in thee be derknessis,
how grete schulen thilk derknessis
be?
24 No man may serue tweyn
lordis, for ethir he schal hate `the toon,
and loue the tother; ethir he shal susteyne
`the toon, and dispise the tothir.
&YOGH;e moun not serue God and richessis.
25 Therfor I seie to &yogh;ou, that &yogh;e be not bisi
to &yogh;oure lijf, what &yogh;e schulen ete; nether
to &yogh;oure bodi, with what &yogh;e schulen
be clothid. Whether lijf is not more
than meete, and the bodie more than
cloth?
26 Biholde &yogh;e the foulis of the
eire, for thei sowen not, nethir repen,
nethir gaderen in to bernes; and &yogh;oure
fadir of heuene fedith hem. Whether
&yogh;e ben not more worthi than thei?
27 But
who of &yogh;ou thenkynge mai putte to his
stature o cubit?
28 And of clothing what
ben &yogh;e bisye? Biholde &yogh;e the lilies of
the feeld, how thei wexen. Thei trauelen
not, nether spynnen;
29 and Y seie to &yogh;ou,
Salomon in al his glorie was not keuered
as oon of these.
30 And if God clothith
thus the hei of the feeld, that to day is,
and to morewe is cast in to an ouen, hou
myche more &yogh;ou of litel feith?
31 Therfor
nyle &yogh;e be bisi, seiynge, What schulen
we ete? or, What schulen we drinke? or,
With what thing schulen we be keuered?
32 For hethene men seken alle these thingis;
and &yogh;oure fadir woot, that &yogh;e han nede
to alle these thingis.
33 Therfor seke &yogh;e first
the kyngdom of God, and his ri&yogh;tfulnesse,

and alle these thingis shulen be
cast to &yogh;ou.
34 Therfor nyle &yogh;e be bisy
in to the morew, for the morew shal be
bisi to `hym silf; for it suffisith to the
dai his owen malice.
CAP. VII.
1 Nile &yogh;e deme, `that &yogh;e be not demed;
for in what doom &yogh;e demen,
2 &yogh;e schulen
be demed, and in what mesure &yogh;e meten,
it schal be meten a&yogh;en to &yogh;ou.
3 But what
seest thou a litil mote in the i&yogh;e of thi
brother, and seest not a beem in thin
owne i&yogh;e?
4 Or hou seist thou to thi brothir,
Brothir, suffre I schal do out a
mote fro thin i&yogh;e, and lo! a beem is in
thin owne i&yogh;e?
5 Ipocrite, `do thou out
first the beem of thin i&yogh;e, and thanne
thou schalt se to do out the mote of the
i&yogh;e of thi brothir.
6 Nile &yogh;e &yogh;yue hooli
thing to houndis, nethir caste &yogh;e &yogh;oure
margaritis bifore swyne, lest perauenture
thei defoulen hem with her feet, and the
houndis be turned, and al to-tere &yogh;ou.
7 Axe &yogh;e, and it schal be &yogh;ouun to &yogh;ou;
seke &yogh;e, and &yogh;e schulen fynde; knocke &yogh;e,
and it schal be openyd to &yogh;ou.
8 For ech
that axith, takith; and he that sekith,
fyndith; and it schal be openyd to hym,
that knockith.
9 What man of &yogh;ou is, that
if his sone axe hym breed, whethir he
wole take hym a stoon?
10 Or if he axe
fische, whether he wole take hym an
edder?
11 Therfor if &yogh;e, whanne &yogh;e ben
yuele men, kunnen &yogh;yue good &yogh;iftis to
&yogh;oure sones, hou myche more &yogh;oure fadir
that is in heuenes schal &yogh;yue good
thingis to men that axen hym?
12 Therfor

alle thingis, what euere thingis &yogh;e
wolen that men do to &yogh;ou, do &yogh;e to hem,
for this is the lawe and the prophetis.
13 Entre &yogh;e bi the streyt &yogh;ate; for the &yogh;ate
that ledith to perdicioun is large, and the
weie is broode, and there ben many that
entren bi it. |
