Note return to page 1 When the Davenant&fslash;Dryden version of THE TEMPEST was revived at the Duke's Company's opulent new Dorset Garden theatre in 1674, its script was slightly revised by Thomas Shadwell, who added further musical interludes (such as a closing masque of Neptune and Amphitrite), grander stage directions, and yet more new roles, such as Milcha, a sweetheart for Ariel. This remained the basis for all productions of THE TEMPEST until the 1750s, achieving regular revivals around Christmas and exerting a lasting influence on the development of the theatrical genre now known as Panto.
