Note return to page 1 Shadwell's successful 1678 version of TIMON OF ATHENS, last acted in 1745 and used as the basis for an unpublished version by Thomas Hull performed in 1786, compensates for the perceived deficiencies of Shakespeare's play by supplying its protagonist with two competing partners, a mercenary fiancée, Melissa, and a loyal mistress, Evandra.
