Note return to page 1 Otway's play dresses Shakespeare's love plot in togas to produce a tragedy about the Roman civil wars of Marius and Sulla, the fate of Young Marius (Romeo) and Sulla's daughter Lavinia (Juliet) supplying a topical lesson against factional conflict. It was frequently revived between its first performances in 1679 and the mid 1730s, and some of its alterations to Shakespeare's plot— such as its excision of the offstage Rosaline, and its scripting of a last dialogue for the lovers in the tomb scene— would remain features of some texts of ROMEO AND JULIET seen in theatres as late as the 1870s.

Note return to page 2 *Mr. Waller.
