Note return to page 1 Two now lost adaptations of Shakespeare's play were performed at different times in the early eighteenth century, and the original appeared briefly at Drury Lane in 1741, but THE COMEDY OF ERRORS did not establish itself in the theatrical repertory until thus moderately rewritten by Thomas Hull. Hull's version first appeared at Covent Garden in 1762 under the title THE TWINS, and then reappeared from 1779 onwards simply as THE COMEDY OF ERRORS. Kemble made only minor alterations to Hull's text for his productions in the 1790s and 1800s, and it was not replaced until the appearance of Frederick Reynolds' musical version in 1819.
