Note return to page 1 Such was the popularity of the Davenant&fslash;Dryden&fslash;Shadwell ENCHANTED ISLAND when first played by the Duke's Company at Dorset Garden that the rival King's Company commissioned Thomas Duffett to write this lewd and meticulous travesty, performed at Drury Lane in November 1674. It relocates the action of the play among contemporary London low-life, rewriting the opening storm as a raid on a brothel and making Prospero the keeper of the Bridewell jail for prostitutes.
