Note return to page 1 This acting edition, which prints a full text of Shakespeare's play but indicates lines cut in performance by marginal inverted commas, probably represents the version of HAMLET evolved by Sir William Davenant and Thomas Betterton when Betterton first played the Prince in around 1661. In addition to its abbreviations, it occasionally simplifies Shakespeare's language.
