1 The eldre man to the `chosen lady,
and to hir children, the whiche I loue in
treuthe; and not I aloone, but and alle
men that knewen treuthe;
2 for the treuthe
that dwellith in &yogh;ou, and with &yogh;ou shal ben
`in to with outen ende.
3 Grace be with
&yogh;ou, mercy, and pees of God the fadir, and
of Jhesu Crist, the sone of the fadir, in
treuthe and charite.
4 I ioyede ful miche,
for I foond of thi sones goynge in treuthe,
as we receyueden maundement of the fadir.
5 And now I preye thee, lady, not as writinge
a newe maundement to thee, but that
that we hadden at the bigynnynge, that
we loue eche other.
6 And this is charite,
that we walke up his maundementes.

7 For many deceyuours wenten
out in to the world, whiche knowlechen

that &yogh;e han wrought, but that &yogh;e receyue
ful meede;
9 witynge that ech man that
goith awey, and dwellith not in the techinge
of Crist, hath not God. He that dwellith
in the techinge, hath and the sone

nyle &yogh;e receyue him in to hous, nether `&yogh;e

that &yogh;e be not confoundid in the day of
oure Lord Jhesu Crist.
12 I hauynge mo
thinges for to wrijte to &yogh;ou, wolde not bi
parchemyn and ynke; sotheli I hope `me
to comynge to &yogh;ou, and speke mouth to
mouth, that &yogh;oure ioye be ful.
13 The sones,
`or dou&yogh;tres, of thi systir chosen greten
