II. THESSALONIANS. The prologe in the secunde pistle.

To Tessalonycensis the apostle wrytith the secunde pistle, and makith knowe to hem of the laste tymes, and of the distruccioun of the aduersarie, that is, anticrist; wrytinge this pistle from Athenys by Titicus, a dekene, and Honesym, a colyt. Here endith the prolog, and bigynneth the secunde pistle of Tessalonycensis. The secounde epistle to Tessalonycense. CAP. I.

1   Poul, and Siluan, and Tymothe, to the chirche of Tessalonycensis, in God oure fadir, 2   and in the Lord Jhesu Crist, grace to &yogh;ou and pees of God, oure fadir, and of the Lord Jhesu Crist. 3   We schullen,

`or owen, do thankyngis euermore to God for &yogh;ou, britheren, so as it is worthi, for &yogh;oure feith ouerwexith, and the charite of ech of &yogh;ou to gidere haboundith. 4   So that we silf glorien in &yogh;ou in the chirchis of God, for &yogh;oure pacience and feith in alle &yogh;oure persecuciouns and tribulaciouns. 5   The whiche &yogh;e susteynen into the ensaumple of the iust dom of God, that &yogh;e be had worthi in the kyngdom of God, for which and &yogh;e suffren. 6   If netheles it is iust at God for to quyte &yogh;eldyng to hem that trublen &yogh;ou, 7   and to &yogh;ou that ben trublid, reste with vs in the schewinge of oure Lord Jhesu Crist fro heuene, with aungels of his vertu, 8   in the flawme of fyer, &yogh;yuynge veniaunce to hem that knewen not God, and that obeyen not to the euangelie of oure Lord Jhesu Crist. 9   The whiche schulen &yogh;yue, `or suffre, euere lastinge peynes, in perisching fro the face of the Lord, and fro the glorie of his vertu, 10   whanne he schal come for to be glorified in his seyntis, and for to be maad wondirful in alle men that bileueden, for oure witnessyng is bileued on &yogh;ou, in that day. 11   In which thing also we preien euermore for &yogh;ou, that oure God `fouchesaf for to clepe &yogh;ou in his clepyng, and fulfille al the wille of his goodnesse, and the werk of feith in vertu; 12   that the name of oure Lord Jhesu Crist be clarified in &yogh;ou, and &yogh;e in it, vp the grace of oure `God, and of the Lord Jhesu Crist. 1   Forsothe, britheren, we preien &yogh;ou by the comynge of oure Lord Jhesu Crist, and oure congregacioun into the same thing, 2   that &yogh;e be not moued soone fro &yogh;oure witt, nether be agast, nethir bi spirit, nethir by word, nether by epistle as sent by vs, as the day of the Lord be

For no but `departyng awey, `or dissencioun, schal come first, and the man of synne schal be schewid, the sone of perdicioun, 4   that is aduersarie, and is enhaunsid vpon al thing that is seid God, or that is worschipid, so that he sitte in the temple, `or into the temple, of God, schewinge him silf as he be God. 5   Wher &yogh;e holden not, that &yogh;it whanne I was at &yogh;ou, I seide thes thingis to &yogh;ou? 6   And now what withholdith, &yogh;e witen, that he be schewid in his tyme. 7   Forwhi the mysterie, `or priuyte, of wickidnesse worchith now; oonly that he that holdith now, holde, til it be maad of the myddel. 8   And thanne `the ilke wickid man schal be schewid, whom the Lord Jhesu schal sle with the spirit of his mouth, and schal distroye with the illumynyng, `or schynyng, of his comyng. `Jhesus schal sle him, 9   whos comyng is vp the worching of Sathanas, in al vertu, and signes, and grete wondris, lyinge, `or fals, and in al disseit of wickidnesse, 10   to hem that perischen. For that thei resceyueden not the charite of treuthe, that thei schulden be maad saaf. Therfore God schal sende to hem a worching of errour, that thei bileue to leesyng, 11   `or gabbyng, that alle be demyd, `or dampned, the whiche bileueden not to treuthe, but consentiden to wickidnesse. 12   Forsoth we owen for to do thankingis euermore to God for &yogh;ou, &yogh;e `bretheren loued of God, that God chees vs primyssis, `or firste fruytis, into heelthe, in halowyng of spirit and feith of treuthe; 13   in the which and he clepide

CAP. III.

1   Britheren, `hennis forthward preie &yogh;e for vs, that the word of God renne, and be clarified, 2   as and anentis &yogh;ou; and that we be delyuered fro vncouenable, `or noyous, and yuele men; sothli feith is not of alle men. 3   Forsoth the Lord is trewe, that schal conferme vs, and schal kepe fro yuel. 4   Sothli, britheren, we tristen of &yogh;ou in the Lord, for what euere thingis we bydden, and &yogh;e don and schulen don. 5   Forsoth the Lord dresse &yogh;oure hertis, in the charite of God, and pacience of Crist. 6   Forsothe, britheren, we denouncen to &yogh;ou in the name of oure Lord Jhesu Crist, that &yogh;e withdrawe &yogh;ou fro ech brother wandrynge vnordynatly, `or a&yogh;ens good ordre, and not vp the tradicioun, that thei resceyueden of vs. 7   Sothli &yogh;e &yogh;e silf witen, how it bihoueth for to sue vs. For we weren not `inquyet, `or reste, or in pesyble, among &yogh;ou, 8   nether frely, `or withoute oure owne traueil, we eeten breed of ony man, but in trauel and werynesse ny&yogh;t and day worchinge, that we greueden noon of &yogh;ou. 9   Not as we hadden not power, but that we

Forsothe `the ilke God of pees &yogh;yue to &yogh;ou euerlastyng pees in al place. 16   The Lord be with alle &yogh;ou. 17   My salutacioun by the hond of Poul; `that is signe in ech epistle.
