CAP. XXVII.
1 Camen ny&yogh; forsothe the dou&yogh;tres of
Salphaad, sone of Ephor, sone of Galaad,
sone of Machir, sone of Manasse,

that was the sone of Josep; of whom
thes ben the names; Maala, and Noba,
and Egla, and Melcha, and Thersa.
2 And
thei stoden before Moysen and Eleazar,
the preest, and alle the prynces of the
puple, at the dore of the tabernacle of
the boond of pees;
3 and seiden, Oure
fader is deed in deseert, and was not in
the dissencioun, that is styryd a&yogh;ens the
Lord, vndur Chore, but in his synne is
deed; this hadde not maal children.
Whi is take the name of hym fro his
meyne, for he hadde no sone? &YOGH;yfe &yogh;e to
vs possessions amonge the cosynes of oure
fader.
4 And Moyses toolde the cause of
hem to the doom of the Lord;
5 the which
seide to hym,
6 Ry&yogh;twise thingis asken the
dou&yogh;tres of Salphaad; &yogh;yf to hem possessiouns
amonge the cosyns of her fader,
and to hym in heritage come thei aftir.
7 To the sones forsothe of Yrael thow
shalt speke thes thingis,
8 A man whanne
he were deed with out sone, to the dou&yogh;ter
shal passe the herytage;
9 if he haue
no dou&yogh;ter, he shal haue successours his
britheren;
10 and if there weren no britheren,
&yogh;e shulen &yogh;yue the herytage to
the britheren of the fader of hym;
11 if
forsothe he have not men britheren to his
fader, the herytage shal be &yogh;eue to hem
that ben next to hym. And this shal be
hooly to the sones of Yrael, bi perpetuel
law, as the Lord comaundide to Moyses.
12 The Lord forsothe seide to Moyses, Sty
vp into this hil of Abarym, and bihold
fro thens the loond, that I am to &yogh;yuynge
to the sones of Irael.
13 And whanne
thow seest it, and thow shalt goo to thi
puple, as wente thi brother Aaron;
14 for
thow hast offendide me in the deseert of
Syn, in the contradiccioun of the multitude,
ne halowe me &yogh;e wolden before it,

vpon the watris. Thes ben the watris of
contradiccioun in Cades, of the deseert of
Syn.

16 To whom answerde Moyses, Puruey
the Lord God of the spyritis of al
fleshe a man that be vpon this multitude,
and may goo out,
17 and goo yn before
hem, and leden hem out, or leden hem
yn; lest the puple of the Lord be as
sheep with out sheepherd.
18 And the Lord
seyde to hym, Take Josue, the sone of
Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of
God, and put thin hoond vpon hym;
19 the
which shal stoond before Eleazar, the
preest, and al the multitude.
20 And thow
shalt &yogh;yue to hym heestys, alle men
seynge, and a part of thi glorye, that al
the synagoge of the sones of Yrael here
hym.
21 For that if eny thing shal be to
doynge, Eleazar, the preest, shal counseil
the Lord; at the word of hym shal
goo out, and shal goo yn; he, and al
the sones of Yrael with hym, and that
other multitude.
22 Moyses dide as the
Lord comaundide, and whanne he hadde
takun Josue, he sette hym before Eleazar,
the preest, and al the myche comynge
of the puple;
23 and putt the hoondis
to his heed, alle thingis a&yogh;en told that
the Lord comaundide.
