CAP. XXVII.
1 Ne glorie thou in to the moru, vnknowende
what the dai to ouercome
bringe forth.
2 Preise thee an alien, and
not thi mouth; a straunger, and not
thi lippis.
3 Heuy is the ston, and charious
is the grauel; but the wrathe of the
fool is heuyere than either.
4 Wrathe
hath not mercy, ne brekende out wodnesse;
and the bure of the stirid spirit
bern who shall moun?
5 Betere is open
amending, than hid looue.
6 Betere ben
the woundis of the loouere, than the
gileful kosses of the hatere.
7 The soule
fulfild shal to-trede the hony comb; the
soule forsothe hungrende also bitter for
sweete shal take.
8 As a brid ouerpassende
fro his nest, so a man that forsaketh
his place.
9 With oynement and diuers
smellis deliteth the herte; and with
goode counseilis of the frend the soule is
-- --
swetid.
10 Thi frend, and the frend of thi
fader, ne leue thou; and the hous of thi
brother go thou not in, in the dai of thi
tormenting. Betere is a ne&yogh;hebore biside,
than a brother aferr.
11 Studie to
wisdam, sone myn, and glade thou myn
herte; that thou mowe to the repreuere
answern a wrd.
12 The felle seende euel
is hid; litle childer forth passende suffreden
harmys.
13 Tac the clothing of
hym, that behotith for a straunger;
and for an alien tac awei to hym a wed.
14 Who blissith to his ne&yogh;hebore with a
gret vois, fro ny&yogh;t risende, to the cursere
shal be lic.
15 Rooues thur&yogh; droppende in
the dai of cold, and a womman ful of
strif ben comparisound togidere.
16 Who
holdith hir, as he heelde wind; and the
oile of his ri&yogh;t side he auoide out.
17 Iren
with iren is whettid out; and a man
whettith out the face of his frend.
18 Who
kepith a fige tree, shal ete the frutis of
it; and who kepere is of his lord, shal
ben glorified.
19 What maner wise in watris
a&yogh;een shinen the cheres of men lokende;
so the hertes of men ben opened
to prudent men.
20 Helle and perdicioun
neuere ben fulfild; and the e&yogh;en of men
vnfillable.
21 What maner wise siluer is
preued in the &yogh;eting vessel, and gold in
the furneis; so is preued a man in the
mouth of preiseris. The herte of the
wicke sechith out euelis; the ri&yogh;t forsothe
herte secheth out kunnyng.
22 If
thou bete togidere a fool in a morter, as
hoolid barli smytende there vp on the
pestel; shal not ben take awei fro hym
his folie.
23 Bisili knowe thou the chere
of thi beeste; and thi flockis behold.
24 Forsothe thou shalt not han continuelli
power; but a croune shal be &yogh;olde to thee
in ieneracioun of ieneraciouns.
25 Opened
ben the medwis, and apereden greene
erbis; and gedered ben heys fro the hillis.
-- --
26 Lombis ben to thi clothing; and geet to
the pris of the feeld.
27 Suffise to thee the
mylc of got in to thi metes; in to the
necessaries of thin hous, and to liflode to
thin hond wymmen.
