Note return to page 1 Although the play had been popular in some version of its original form since the 1660s, Betterton prepared this slightly abridged version when he first played Falstaff with his breakaway troupe of players at the Lincoln's Inn Fields theatre in around 1697. HENRY IV PART 1 remained continually in the repertory thereafter, its acting text gradually evolving into the version published in Bell's edition in the 1770s.
