Note return to page 1 Gilbert's play (less a burlesque than a comic spin-off) first appeared in the magazine FUN in 1874, in response to the success of Henry Irving's production of HAMLET at the Lyceum, the destination to which its Hamlet is finally dismissed. It was first acted in 1891 (with some revisions), and was revived several times thereafter.
