Note return to page 1 Davenant and Dryden's drastic, lighthearted and enduringly popular adaptation of THE TEMPEST was first acted in 1667, and many of its new contributions to the play would still be in use as late as the early nineteenth century. It supplies Miranda with a sister, Dorinda, and as a counterpart to these two women who have never seen a man invents a man who has never seen a woman, Hippolito (originally played by an actress), kept as a ward by Prospero in a separate part of the island and ultimately paired off with Dorinda (after dying in a duel with Ferdinand, but being magically revived by Ariel). Caliban, too, acquires a sister (called Sycorax), through whom Trinculo (rechristened Trincalo) attempts to claim the island by matrimonial alliance.
