Note return to page 1 Davenant's version of MACBETH was first acted in 1663, and its immense success helped establish the habit of thoroughly rewriting Shakespeare for performance which remained normal practice for most of the ensuing century. With its expansion of roles for actresses (particularly Lady Macduff), its simplification of Shakespeare's diction and its added spectacle and music, it would remain the only version of MACBETH performed in London until Garrick made his own revision in 1744 (published in Bell's edition), and its operatic elaborations of the witches' scenes would survive into that and subsequent acting versions of the play until the late nineteenth century.
